Closest mmmorpg to perfect from conception to current is hands down WoW. Not much arguing there due to success.
My personal second and the game I felt was better than WoW in several areas was GW1.
This game is easily my third and has the potential to take 2nd but I'm too new to it to tell.

You must've never played Ultima Online or EQ, of which were out before WoW and was the blueprint and IMO leaps and bounds better than WoW.

    EQ had some hardcore stuff...

No, The Witcher 3 is (close to perfect, since nothing is perfect). ESO is decent though; the potential is there.

That's how UO was. You die, all your stuff would be available to loot... you had to run and find a wandering healer or a church and jam back to make sure it was still there! I loooooved UO, at one point I had 3 houses grandfathered until they changed it to one per account, and they were placed among the land which made the player economy fantastic. There was no find a dot on the map, go get quest, do quest, get gold BS. I started off with 100 gold and that was about it... took me weeks to figure out even kind of what I was doing. Why kids these days, and I hate to sound old, but just unfortunately will never get to experience that... unless they download the game and go play it on an oldschool server.... the game is still around, it just got nerfed when they came out with Tameriel or whatever....

You could also get perma red, which meant your character PK'd too much or stole too much and there was no enterting cities... You could go just outside of town and get slain by someone...

I have a friend who says this game is the best MMORPG ever and that its better than WoW, and whenever I explain that WoW has certain game mechanics that are better, he refuses to listen and just states that its elder scrolls therefore its better.

This game is really really good in my opinion, but as an MMO, its not the best. However, the quests and stories are very interesting and as such I like it more than WoW.

@Fartman. I didn't say my favorite, I was categorizing BEST of all time. My favorite boxer may not be the best. WoW isn't my favorite, GW1 and so far this are my favorites. But you cannot do a top 10 Mmorpg and NOT put wow at number 1, in terms of sheer success and longevity they win hands down.

I can't stand Floyd Mayweather jr. But to say he's not the greatest is hard to back up, undefeated, had multiple titles for 10 years or some crap. Anyway you get my drift

so i have a friend that is convinced that this is the perfect MMORPG ever made. thoughts?

It has the potential to go down as one of the best MMORPGs ever. That's why so many people continue to play it despite all it's flaws. But there are too many issues with the game right now. In its current state, ESO is simply an above average MMORPG.

The perfect game for the common denominator? No.
A lot of people seem to want to change it to something it's not. What makes the game perfect for me was finding it's niche in a market that is largely dominated by Blizzard. Adding in all these features people complain about (auction house, arena, etc) changes the game into something else and it no longer becomes TESO

I think many complaints and justified is that console players want the same game with regards to option as the PC has. You know like chat, damage numbers and other add on's etc.

Its a beautyful game with great questing and Lovely NPC chars. They put a lot of effort in it and especially in the voice acting. no game is perfect and we are a bit spoiled I Think :) Of course there is nothing wrong in trying to improve it but compared to other games iv seen out there, this is not bad. Not bad at all. If we only focus on our criticism we will be even more critical <3

All games have toxic forums (ask me, iv been playing ArcheAge from beta >.<) and if we read too much negativity we will be affected. play the game as long as you enjoy it. When u are tired of it, take a break and play something else. Dont play it to the Point u get bitter, tis only a game and it has hopefully given you many hours of joy so far <3 I play it to get some distraction and adventure, and I do get that :)

    ESO is stunningly beautiful.

No just in a pure graphics sense but how those graphics have been used to build a world.

There are places I can stand and stare a just go "wow".
But other games have done that too (LOTRO the first time I was at the top of the stairs in Zelem Melek for example).

I'm not normally a fan of limited skill bar - action combat games; but I have really enjoyed it in ESO, it seems to work very will.

But ESO's design decisions sometime leave me cold: the lack of a useful UI, the lack of a free to all trade system, the inventory issues, the lacklustre choices at character creation for hair, beard, tattoo options etc.

I was discussing these issues, and more with my cousin who I have gamed with for decades.

I said that as a "gaming experience" I would give ESO 8/10; but as an MMORPG I would give it 5/10 - tops.

Close to perfect besides the lag, but I'd like to be able to swim & explore underwater again ... I really enjoyed that. This is my first time playing a MMORPG so I can't compare it to anything.

This is the thing that makes me so angry.

Even playing this game for 20 minutes you see the massive potential dripping out of every pore.

Honestly, if ESO had achieved even 50% of its potential I would uninstall just about every other MMORPG on my PC right now, and in some ways I wish I could do that. Its a beautifully created game-world, a pleasure to walk/ridre/fight through.

But, as you say, there are just so many issues with it right now.

I honestly think Zenimax / DEVs need to revisit some there "Must Be Different™" decisions and start maybe looking at "Must Make Playerbase Happier" because without that the game is doomed to wither and die; and it deserves so much more than that.

If you like tedious singleplayer questing in very similar questlines in very similar environments
where a given storyline and mission chain gives you no freedom than to follow the given way
where nothing new or unexpected happens from levelzone to levelzone, where pvp isnt
about skill but about gear and CP and biggest zerg, where crafters and sellers have no big room,
wher bugs are not patched and lags are horrible and development takes 12x more time
    than in any other game...

Yes, then it is the PERFECT GAME! (for you).

I for myself am not even sure if this is really an MMORPG as you have very limited freedom
and if you let pvp beside, pve is ~95% singleplayer sologame. Most contact i have with
other people is when chatting in my guilds....

And about potential... as TESO came out it was said it has potential. And yes it had.
Now after more than a year was this potential used for....? uhm... well, it has potential.

Sure thing is there is beside the asia grinders not much on the market at the moment.
Lotro ist outdated, others are very special. Archeage is pay to win. Many projects are
prealpha smallcompany projects which will never make it to a stable game.

So Teso is surely one of the best MMORPG at the moment cause there is not really much
    to choose from.

Completely understand. i was a beta tester and the only things that changed for me was that they added a thieving system. plus the console version is just filled with jerks who dont have the common sense to use a mic so i have to listen to every fricken sound in thier house because they are using a fricken kenect or whatever that peice of crap is called.

Before its release and the super massive hype, and even during Betas, there were high hopes that it would have been.

Far from it. At best what it is now, an average to mediocre MMO wearing an Elder Scrolls "skin". Sure, for some it might be the absolutely ecstatic perfection of an experience. Every game (even the truly horrible ones) has their dedicated fans, good for them.

ESO can still be an enjoyable gaming experience, at least certain elements of it are indeed good. But nowhere near the "revelation" millions of Elder Scrolls followers and MMO players expected.

Again, considering the hype, and the massive resources / budget behind it, it has not been doing particularly better than "little games" run by a small team of "keen amateurs". And this fact on its own is a major disappointment.
