ESO has been out for 3 years on PC and 1.5 years on consoles so I am curious as to other people’s opinions on ZOS and ESO after all this time.

I don’t care what ZOS does to the game, I LOVE ESO and will play this game until the servers rust over and give up the ghost.

I think ZOS is doing a good job and I will play this game for the long run.

I am concerned that ZOS is taking this game in the wrong direction but I have a wait and see attitude so I will continue to play and give ZOS the benefit of doubt.
36% 105 votes
I have no confidence in ZOS and I am only playing until something better comes out.

ZOS has no idea what they are doing and I plan on quitting and just watch reruns of Alf in my spare time until the next hyped game that is around the corner comes out.

If a game has to become "absolutely horrible and unenjoyable" for you to quit it, because you have invested too much time and effort into it, and passed a point of no return - that is the sunk cost fallacy.

I'm not saying the person should or should not play ESO, I'm just saying that that is the principle that keeps that person in the game, until the point where it may or may not become "absolutely horrible and unenjoyable".

Lately they have me worried, but we'll see what happens. I've played several MMOs who make all the same mistakes. If they fail and lose their player base and have their marketing team spam us with "Come back to [insert game name]" ads then it'll just be one of those things.

    Not necessarily.

I for example don't look at this game in terms of cost. I look at it in terms of how much enjoyment I get out of it.

I like some things they're doing (for example the housing update is exactly how I imagine I would have done it), I really dislike and distrust other things they're doing (crown crates).

But overall I think it's a good game and I intend to keep playing it for the foreseeable future. If they make enough changes I don't like and I find I'm not enjoying the game any more I'll stop playing. Or I may just get bored with it. I don't tend to worry about it too much because ultimately it's a game, either I have fun and keep playing or I get bored and don't. It's not a big deal to me either way.

They did and continue to do an amazing job.

While I'm not overly happy with Crown Crates, I will still buy a few of them and subscribe each month to support them because this game is a huge source of entertainment to me.

People here don't give them the credit they deserve. Of course there is still a lot to be done and I wouldn't mind at all if after Homestead and Vvardenfell they took 6 months to address all those long standing bugs, stability and fixed Cyrodiil PvP even when Battlegrounds arrive.

I can't even imagine the amount of work that is already in this game. It is mind-blowing the amount of attention to details that I still find after more than a year playing on console.

We are still due for a few essential things, like Housing (that is being addressed now), Transmog System, small scale instanced PvP, more end game content variety (more trials, 6 man PvE stuff, 24 PvE stuff...).

My only disappointment with them right now is the state of PvP. It is broken, it is getting emptier by the week, and it looks like it won't be seriously address for at least 6-9 months if the plans datamined for U14 and U15 (small dungeons) are confirmed.

"I think ZOS is doing a good job and I will play this game for the long run."

I put this, although it was a tough decision between this and the "wrong direction" one.

That's because I don't think they are taking things ENTIRELY in the wrong direction. I think that The crown store is probably good for ESO, overall - although i disagree with Crown Crates and Crown-Only Motifs - I think that the game itself is going in a good direction, there is clearly several zones forthcoming that are planned, and the housing system looks great (although expensive both in-game and out of it).

I expect to be playing for the next two or three years at least.

And i'll probably keep my subscription for a significant part of that.

This is a pretty interesting discussion on its own. It is highly possible that some people may invest so much time and real world money (as is the new trend) with this game that they may never leave no matter how bad the game gets. Maybe ZOS understands this and is eagerly waiting for people to purchase homes with real world money knowing full well that these people may have to be pried away from the game.... but then again this is just me thinking out loud.

Ive been enduring (as have we all) with their slow bugfix/balance fixing for years now. At the top of my head theres the batswarmult spam "exploit" then theres the nirnhoned bug and then theres the double or quadruple mundusstone bug (wich apparently still exist) and all of those and other bugs/inbalances took well over 4-5 months for them to fix even after they publicly acknowledged the existance of said bugs.

I gave them the benefit of the doubt in the beginning, but now, 3 years later or so...I have only doubt. Sadtimes. Not to mention the direction of the pvp is going downhill fast af, just look at the proccmeta/heavy armor.

For me, it's not "being concerned ZOS is taking the game in the wrong direction"... it's about tolerating the F2P-ish elements because I enjoy the rest of the game, and I understand that ZOS needs to make money to keep the game afloat.

Things like gamble boxes and cash shop convenience items are just what happen when an MMO comes off subscription, because running servers played by millions of players isn't cheap. So while I don't agree with some of their choices, I don't know what their finances are, so I give them the benefit of the doubt and figure that such moves are necessary. Then, I pay my subscription to do my part and go back to enjoying my characters' journeys through Tamriel.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

To me, "I won't stop playing but I worry zos is taking the game in the wrong direction" is not a very useful metric.

Such a category encompasses almost every perspective from "I am wary of microtransactions and the greater trends of online multiplayer game design" to "I've recently experienced minor frustration" to "I want the success of a top-tier e-athlete handed to me by design always" to "I am poor at curating my own experience online and I'd like the staff to do it."

^ This is broadly speaking where I am at.

I left the game just as IC was going live because I simply wasn't enjoying it.

I played other games, some I enjoyed more than others, some I enjoyed more than I had enjoyed ESO. After SWTOR's last patch I unsubbed (it had been running for 8 months+) and uninstalled the game. If you think anything in ESO is "really bad" go play SWTOR end-game for a week. You'll beg to come back to ESO.

I came back to ESO the 2nd week of December, within 2 or 3 days I was enjoying the game so much that I had subbed for 3 months. I am really looking forward to Homestead, even though I think there are one or two essential elements missing from them.

My first TES game was Morrowind, never really got into it that much because my PC was at the low end of the recommended specs, so seeing all the data-mined stuff on Vvaedenfell stuff is quite exciting.

I don't tend to PvP in MMORPGs (I simply don't think its the right medium for PvP due to ubiquitous balancing issues) but what little I have done in ESO has been enjoyable it short stints. I would like to see PvP improved because PvPers are just as much a part of the game community as anyone else and no one should be getting short-changed.

My major issue with the game when I quit was the Trade Kiosk system, and how it gated trading from so many players - sellers and buyers. One Tamriel has addressed the issue of buyers being unable to search all the kiosks for what they are looking for. But I still think the Trade system can, and SHOULD, be improved so that even players not in a Trade Guild can have a chance to sell their goods - and I have seen many good suggestions on how that could be done and still keep the Kiosks and Trade Guilds in place.

Crown Crates concern me, greatly, because I have seen the impact they have had in SWTOR, where a few whales generate enough revenue on Cartel Crates to enable the Devs to be very, very lazy and unimaginative when it comes to new content - KOTET and Galactic Command for example (for the record I consider SWTOR 5.0 to be the very worst expac I have played in any game).

However, I simply will not, EVER, spend RL money on a gambling crate of virtual goods. If I am parting with RL money I want to buy EXACTLY what I want to buy. NOT a chance at a box full of rubbish I will never use and don't want.

So, over all, I am generally speaking happy with where ESO is right now, but do recognise that there are still areas ripe for significant improvement, and do have some concerns about certain elements of the current direction of travel.

What I will say is this: 18-24 months ago that was how I felt about SWTOR, and the Devs got lazy and unimaginative, and in the immediate aftermath of 5.0 being released so many players unsubbed that EA felt the need to send out a player survey to find out why so many players were quitting. That is the same EA that had said it wanted to be more hands-off with its various studios and only offer strategic oversight.

Were we are now with ESO can, very quickly, turn into where SWTOR is now. It is simply too late if games studios leave issues simmering away until they explode. Get in early, listen to player feedback and actually HEAR what is being said, and look for solutions.

I fully understand that Game Developers have a "vision" for their games, and that "vision" may not entirely match up with the players' vision or expectations of the game. But one a product has been released for consumption it stops being the producers' product and becomes the "consumers' product and that may (will) mean that some elements of that vision need to be compromised. Because a product without enough consumers very soon becomes a product that can#t afford to pay its producers.

ZOS improved ESO in the last years but they missed out many occasions to just make the game better. That's my gripe and that's what makes it so sad. This game needs content but ZOS isn't listening... I don't see ZOS getting their priorities right. Homestead is nice but it's no content. In the end this means literally no content for ~ 1 year until we see (maybe?) Vvardenfell in May or later this year. And it's not like they added much content in 2016, they didn't.

This game needs more "endgame" content and another type of PvP (Arenas/Battlegrounds). The game itself is pretty good but neither PvE nor PvP are fleshed out - they're both pretty... flat.

The game is going in the wrong direction for an MMO that should have a plan for longevity. Zos is extremely slow to enhance and expand this game. they also over charge for content $ to replayablity on new content is horrible. the complete lack of addressing the DPS meta meaning everything can be avoided andthe roles disreguarded has killed any of the group dynamics i enjoy. so i have quit ZOS is making a game for the quick money market and churn player base, in short the picked a path of least resistance that has the game going in circles just like the damn logo the serpent eats its tail.

ESO has been the single biggest time sink ever for me. It's a toss up whether I've spent more time sleeping than playing ESO since it arrived :s . Housing may be a make/break deal for me. If Housing comes to us as it is on PTS, I may be shifting to some of the games I bought on Steam sales the last few years. I don't mind the housing costs, but I question including legendary mats in Master writs unless RNG is not part of the writ reward. Those mats are too rare and valuable for an RNG system. Furniture crafting seems to be incredibly grindy, with the need to collect new mats and recipes from so many different sources, while the drop rate for the new mats is low, and the recipes call for huge amounts of some mats. The economy is about to be turned on it's head. So much of housing seems designed to push the crown store and new subscriptions (for the craft bag). The lack of storage with housing also seems portentous. Is storage going to be another crown store item? Based on their own player number estimate, the wide-spread crown store usage everyone can see on other players, and a good guess on subscription rate, zos is making a lot of money. I will never be convinced otherwise without seeing a balance sheet. The single thing that will drive me from the game is for zos to continue, and to escalate, making the game so grindy to drive players to the crown store. I already sub, that should be enough for zos.
