I was really looking fowards to have this setup on my stamcainist

but no, due to ZoZ pulling a Richard Relocation I will not be able to use this mask style on my arcanist
Which inturn means that me, along with every other non nightblade player that wants that mask style will have ZERO reason to run IA

I think adding class specific items to ESO is a terrible idea that undermines the whole premise of the games style system.

One thing I did notice on PTS that is different from live is that equipping at least 5 of the class set style outfit styles unlocks the corresponding class set VFX, which only happens on live if you have 5 of the class set bonuses active. I don't think this was mentioned in the patch notes?

@ZOS_Kevin, @ZOS_GinaBruno - is this behavior intended? If it is, the change to lock styles to classes makes more sense given the added VFX was previously only associated with the set bonuses, which is already class-locked. Personally I would rather have no VFX associated with the style and also not lock the styles to classes, i.e. the same behavior as in the preview on live.

    xmcm484tfuah.png

    5t2csazcb52g.png

The first image shows my character triggering the VFX on PTS by equipping enough of the outfit styles, and the second image shows the VFX disappearing after I remove some of the outfit styles.

What about a vfx version that is class locked and a vfx off version wich is for all? That would satisfy all. Set keep a "bonus" if it match the class but is also avaible for others

"Style Pages for Class Sets are now available in the Infinite Archive to collect. Style Pages are curated and will drop for your class first. Other Style Pages will drop after a set is complete. All pages are usable, but you will not be able to outfit your character in class styles other than your current class."

So. What exactly is the point of the style page, then? With every other page, be that style page or motif page, you can wear whatever you please regardless of class, race or equipment.
Why is this the exception? What is there to gain from this? The main reason most people have been looking forward to the class sets as style pages is, primarily, the nightblade mask. And most people can't access that because they need to be a nightblade to equip it, exactly like the armor piece?

This goes against the idea of style/motif pages to begin with.

To keep templars away from Nightblades mask...No class should get the mask xD

Disappointing since the sorc set is actual trash compared to the rest, but I'm also not fully surprised. Some of the designs are way better done than the others in general (arcanist getting a cool glow VFX, nightblade and templar are just super well done period).... it's just another reason for myself and many people I know to continue not doing Endless/Infinite/whatever it's called Archive.

I'm adding my voice amongst the many who are against this. This goes against a lot of what is ESO and Elder Scrolls.

If it is because of some VFX (something I don't like in the first place because the majority are not subtle enough or of good quality), then add that as some extra cosmetic or make two versions, or just let people have the FVX on whichever character they want, there's already so much glowing elsewhere it's not going to be that noticeable.

I have been thinking about this. And I think... it really matters a lot what the intent is here. We haven't heard anything yet on that, have we?

I am most concerned that ZOS might think that this helps with class identity. In my opinion, it doesn't. Many of us discussing class identity are referring to ZOS removing things from a class to support a skill line everyone can access, or to prepare for making a new class, or as part of the standardization and hybridization initiatives. Remember when Templat shards could stun? That's the kind of thing that a lot of people mean.

In and of itself, having certain styles be locked to a certain class isn't a big deal. And there is precedent like the Alliance costume. Because we have so many skins and outfits and ways to change how we look in this game, this doesn't honestly impact combat. Let's be real here. It really is purely about pride in an attribute of your character... alliance or class. That's it.

    But there are two problems.

    1. It is concerning if ZOS thinks that this is how to address the comments about class identity. If they say they wanted to give us a way to have a little class bragging rights... ok. But if class identity is their answer, they are missing the main point and it concerns me a lot.

    2. I am not super passionate about cosmetics, but it sounds to me like folks were able to see how the class styles looked before the community was told they were to be locked. This is problematic because the standard for cosmetics is that anyone can wear anything, with few exceptions (compared to what is available), so it wouldn't be the assumption of the community and thus is now a big disappointment. Therefore (surprise, surprise) this a communication issue, such that an idea which could have been fun in execution is now a negative. Let's not forget, too, that many people are asking for the restricted cosmetics (gender and race specific) to become unrestricted. This is an indication about where the sentiment is going on restricted cosmetics.

Additionally, it is a bit of an odd choice given that so many people in the community do care about this and ZOS should be well aware based on the Crown Store motif sales! We all know it is why motifs didn't go account-wide with AwA. So, if this was the plan it should have been marketed this way from the beginning. "Coming soon... show your class pride with unique class specific styles and sets!"

Instead, ZOS missed the boat and introduced something quietly that goes against primary game world logic and the community assumptions that come with that.

Therefore the issue to me is not necessarily that this was done, but what the intent was and how it was communicated, as it potentially indicates that ZOS is [snip] and again is taking feedback and applying it incorrectly. This choice doesn't bother me personally (I have so, so many cosmetics) but when I talk about class identity, styles are not at all what I mean!

I already pre-ordered Gold Road for my main account before this "improvement" to the IA outfit styles was revealed via the PTS. I'm debating whether or not I'll ask for a refund on it, but I do know I won't be ordering it for my other three accounts (which I usually do with new chapter releases) until this issue is resolved. Voting with our money is the best way to get a corporation's attention.

@ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_Kevin It was around this period of the PTS cycle that elk were removed from the Telvanni Peninsula after player feedback, yet there's nothing as far as I've seen on class sets. Are the developers really this focused on the idea of class-locked outfit styles? Are any developers allowed to chime in on this? I figured this amount of backlash would've resulted in something.

I have also made an account just to complain about this. It's just against everything we had before. My Altmer can wear Dunmer styles, even Ebonheart Pact stuff, but no, she will always be stuck with a long robe and a weird hood because she's a Sorc. Man, why can't they just activate the animation and logos IF your class matches with the style, but otherwise it just behaves normally? I just hate this move because it opens up a dark path of more restricted cosmetics, when I actually think we need LESS restrictions when it comes to that.

Can’t believe people are getting so worked up over this. It’s certainly not game breaking enough to make me not want to buy an expansion. Other MMO’s have class specific transmogs, I’m more than happy that they are doing so here.
Take the Templar Wrathsun chest, it has a Templar sign front and centre of the chest, would look ridiculous on a Necromancer for example.
There are literally hundreds of other Motif’s in the game to use, a small few being class locked is no big deal at all!
I wouldn’t be surprised if they release a motif with a head piece similar to the Nightblades class motif at some point in the future, now they know how popular it appears to be!

I definitely think some of the concern here is that this is going to be a new, common feature such that going forward it won't be a small few, but it will be the "norm" to release more styles that are class specific.

I agree with this statement. When I first saw the helm in the motif area I thought to myself "FINALLY, they are breaking away from their mold". Its a nice, simple but thematically recognizable headpiece (I believe that people want more simple, less spikes than what is generally offered).

I can understand the chest pieces being locked becasue of class symbols and unfortunately even helms and shoulders. But gloves, belt, pants, boots...man no one is going to even know what you are wearing from a distance with those pieces.

So, I am torn on the topic because I see both sides and I agree with both sides simultaneously.

I see it more as adding restrictions, when previously there were none. And let's face it, nothing anywhere is improved by saying "Yeah, you could have this, but you can't anymore." You're completely removing choice here.

Yes, ESO has always had some racial/gender restrictions (that people are very vocal about removing). But if you look at those restrictions that they have, they're all for older content - hairstyles or adornments that came with basegame or were added to the files up to about the time of the Thieves Guild DLC, so this is really only the first year and a half of content. Since then, all new content (with one single exception) has been made available for both genders and for all races.

(The exception here is the Seastone Browplate Major adornment, which was made female-only due to it being a daily reward in the same month to balance out the male-only beard Old Salt's Trinket. While we can claim that the Short Mussed Wave hairstyle was also racially-locked and the female style was badly modelled at release, it was technically in the files before the TG DLC, with an Object ID lower than that of some basegame hairstyles, and was originally intended as male-only, which is why the morph didn't fit correctly on female heads until it was fixed well after it released.)

As for the class sets, they are previewable on Live currently, where there are no restrictions. People can already look at their Nightblades with the Wrathsun set on, and there is no problem with it. It means that it was specifically changed in U41 to lock them by class, thereby adding restrictions where before there were none, and then also adding the set VFX to the style pages, which is again a departure from the standard, as no other set will bring it's VFX with it. This removes choice. If a player wants the VFX, they can wear the set. If a player wants the styles without the VFX, that's what the outfit system is for. But now, you can't get the styles without the VFX, and you can't wear it off-class, even though it's only the chestpiece and weapons that have a visible logo.

And, as has been pointed out, why restrict this, when nothing else is? We can wear armor of the Dominon as we're getting our orders from General Zimmeron to steal the scrolls from... the Dominion. We can dress in full House Telvanni armor while running around in the middle of Black Marsh. We can make sure we represent ourselves as members of the Divine Prosecution as we run around helping various Daedric Princes.
But if we try to wear an unlabelled Class set armor piece as the wrong class...? You can't.
And... why? What's wrong with that? Are we hoping that it'll help us identify who's who in PvP? "Hey, I recognize that belt motif, so I know right away they're a NB!" Or is it more likely the first thing we're gonna see is them cloaking away and then we don't have time to see what they're wearing? Besides, if it was specifically for class identification, shouldn't it then be required that everyone wears their class set (that'll go over well...)

    cq30mvn6udbm.png
Yes, that's a joke. I get it. "But why don't you just wear something similar!!!11!1!1" Because not everything has something similar, and that's where the NB mask comes in. It's completely unique. Yeah, we could hope that ZOS eventually makes another style that looks like that so we can pay money or gamble with Crates for it... or we could have the free one that is already in game and is unrestricted on live, if only they would just not make the change to restrict them.

Besides, if someone doesn't want to see their Warden in the DK set, then... don't put it on them? What benefit is there from telling other people they can't to that for their characters? It's a really bad precedent to start setting if we're allowing one group of people to dictate how others should and shouldn't style the character.

But ESO is not those other MMOs. ESO is ESO, and class restricted styles goes against everything ESO likes to claim it is. There's no restrictioms for classes, every class can do everything and wield every weapon. Every class, race, faction has been able to wear any style and costume. Until now. It doesn't make sense this is restricted when everything else is not and ZOS are very much for the whole "play any way you want".

We can already dress our Ebonheart Pact factioned character in the bluest, most lion covered, Daggerfall themed styles there is.
We can already dress our murderous Dark Brotherhood character in styles that belongs to factions of the law, such as the Divine Prosecution, or vice versa! Just have someone casually walk around with the black hand on their chest, no problem.

We can already dress our characters in a variety of cultists, orders, and whatnot they do not belong to.

We can make our characters ride vampiric zombie senche-raht while looking like the most obvious vampire necromancer that has ever existed, while being neither of those things, and no one bats an eye.

We can make ourself look like several daedra, while not being those.

Restrictions such as this has no place in Elder Scrolls Online. The concept of classes as a whole isn't even an Elder Scrolls-y thing in the first place.

ESO is very much so unlike other MMOs. Not in the sense of standing unique amongst them but in that it's inherently different in terms of direction and design. Why fix what isn't broken? Why follow the standard?
