Maintenance for the week of September 1:
• [IN PROGRESS] Xbox: NA and EU megaservers for patch maintenance – September 3, 4:00AM EDT (8:00 UTC) - 12:00PM EDT (16:00 UTC)
• [IN PROGRESS] PlayStation®: NA and EU megaservers for patch maintenance – September 3, 4:00AM EDT (8:00 UTC) - 12:00PM EDT (16:00 UTC)

This is good and all but uh, where are the cloaks/capes?

oh god ESO is going to turn into Runescape 3

Lol. As much as I like RS3 (and I do play it sometimes when I feel the need for immense grinding), I don't want ESO to be even similar to that. Thought of capes just doesn't feel right in ESO.

I would like capes to be added in game too. Cloth physics are not that difficult to create and animate in video games. I've seen lots of beautiful realistic cape and cloak(cloth) animations in other games such as GW2, Genshin Impact, and in League of Legends. I'm totally for cloaks and capes being added into Elderscrolls.

IMO I would rather have guild cloaks/capes than tabards or hell why not both. Make it happen =)

Capes and cloaks will be in Ashes of Creation. Apparently, they can handle clipping issues.

Besides capes not being a big deal, it seems the game is not set up for clothing moving very well. Having cloaks stuck to our but like a stiff piece of cardboard would look bad. We know this since we already have a cape that does not move.

Depends on what you call the "engine" and whether you think it is the same one as SWTOR uses, at this point in the life of the game.

As I recall from a talk presented by the rigger, they didn't like the way that capes looked and they wanted weapons docked on the back. Given the bone limits of DX9, they traded capes for docked weapons.

As for cloth physics, seems to me that if they wanted the "engine" to support cloth physics, it would support cloth physics. Yes, older PCs and consoles would probably melt.

If they can animate tails to sway I'm sure they could figure out animation for cape clothing too :)

Not that simple, unfortunately. Tails have a very deliberate motion, whereas capes don't. Animating flowing cloth is hard, which is why it's usually simulated. (Which we know won't happen due to performance issues) Not that ZOS can't animate something like this, since some hair and the cloth on the front of most armor are animated like this, but I imagine they decided against capes because of constant clipping with weapons on your back

I don't see the appeal. Why put together a nice outfit if it's just going to be covered up with a cape? Unless I'm standing still and turn the camera all I see is my character's back.

SWTOR is build on the custom engine ZOS wrote? They prototyped the game on one engine while they wrote their own custom version.

I’m glad ZOS left those out! While actual cloaks that go over the shoulders would be practical in certain climates and could look cool, game physics allowing and depending on how they were implemented, capes consisting of a cloth strip hanging from the neck down the middle of the back just looks so dumb.

Yes, Gold star for them. ESO found during alpha/early beta that capes/cloaks didn't work well, and traded off for other features/abilities they considered more important. Given the issues that are still present for items that they did consider important, and the amount of outrage/aggravation that occurred when people found out how well the Breton Hero outfit worked, adding capes and cloaks should be somewhere under the sub-sub-basement of the list of items/qol improvement list. Given what happens with every update that adds stuff, imagine what they could break with cloaks and capes.....like outfits/costumes.......

I've played a few mmo's that had capes and the same outcome always comes to me looking for the toggle to disable it. Even in swtor it clips too much and never looks right. In EQ2 there is a bug that happens with the cape were it looks like some paranormal image.
I much prefer the path ESO went and just had weapons on the back.

I'm sure if Pearl Abyss can figure it out for their smartphone version of BDO, ZOS could figure it out for ESO too. I think a lot of you are just assuming it has to be a lot more complicated than it has to be.

Or perhaps you assume it's easier than it is. Not all MMO's or video games are created equal. Just because a game does one thing doesn't mean they all can.
Please re-read the above responses. ESO had capes in Alpha and Beta. They were horrible and were removed before live. It is not us "assuming" anything, it's a fact that this engine can't support the physics coding required to do it right.
I tried to find a old video of what the "Hero Breton Costume" looked like and how capes worked on that, but can't find mine.

Can anyone please upload a video of Breton Hero Costume as to show what capes look like in ESO?
Perhaps Gina and Jess could do a "Armchair Developer" segment about this like they did with Underwater Exploration.
