All that Zenimax need, is access to the database and remote desktop to the server to access the games core, change/rebuild the game server once they have implemented a patch/addon and sit back and watch the server load :)

The "megaserver" is a concept - it's not one physical server. It's literally a built datacenter, with a large subnet (198.20.192.0/19) of 2805 IP addresses, with each physical server running multiple ESO instances on Linux boxes. On an AT&T leased line. It's a big piece of infrastructure (in 2014 it's also possible to argue a strange piece of infrastructure, in the world of cloud computing nowadays).

As for the EU server move, you can see ZOS are getting battered by patch 1.1.2 problems, so my guess is it's not a priority again.

5 Days left in my account.
I paid a visit today in TESO just to see how it feels to come back after nearly 3 weeks. I couldn't stay more than 5 minutes and since I was here, I wanted to check how I'm actually lagging during a less traffic time.

    In one word: bad.

On average it hovers between @ 270-310ms if I was not doing anything. If I took the staff out to simply "block", it launched @ 380ms and hovered there for a while (enough to capture it).

My absolute momentary best was @ 195ms and then it jumped almost immediately to 280ms. I did not even think of engaging in combat with those numbers!

Without an actual server in the EU, there's no way I'll be able to participate in a paying RPG action game.

Kudos to those that can withstand these numbers! I can't.
(I'm including a large screen capture from my dual monitor setup)

And it's uninstall time for me.

I won't mention that quest giver NPCs went silent for some reason... But that's for those that are staying. :p

I'm fairly sure ZOS hope we've forgotten all about the broken EU PvP and moved on to happily grind Craglorn bosses.

How could we forget when the lag is killing every form of enjoyment ?

I love the game but I hate this company's management. Canceled sub too today. after leveling 3 characters over 50 (V10 - V1 - V3)

PvP is horrible, absolutely non-enjoyable, gave up a while ago only because of the lag.
PvE is also hit, no way to solo and enjoy hard stuff when you can't trust what's on screen... It was kinda okayish with my heavy armor orc... but that's not the same thing with medium and light armor... Veteran bears one-shotting you even if you are out of its cone for almost a second is the 1st exemple coming to mind.

It's not my hardware, it's not my connection, it's good old permanent latency due to the DISTANCE.... and THEN Zenimax' code and hardware just add to the mess.

This is 2014, not 20014, internet isn't yet instant... And cheating customers isn't a really good bizness model either...

P.S. : this is my first and probably last post... since we all know what zenimax does with our "feedback"...
ESO, the great nothing : no PvE difficulty, PvP lags, zero RP tools...

    Sub Canceled, gone

So the LinkedIn employee count for Zenimax has shrunk since launch (pretty standard practice as people move on when games ship, although like 100 people have left). But now there's no people at all listed in Germany (EU datacenter). Also no recruitment for Germany.

What can they say that hasn't been said? Their position is a vague 'sometime in the future'.

And no - it's not good enough. I use a gaming proxy service with a tunnelled direct connection to the game server so I get a ping of 139.

But still get the lag spikes and freezes.

What I cannot stand is the whole weapon swap problem plus the skill firing issue.

both these things are absolutely basic functions to the game and should have been nailed down early in the beta. I cannot understand why this is still a a problem.

If this is not a trivial problem then something is really, really wrong with the engine. I play GW2 and it works fine and even the ArcheAge alpha with 4 bars plus mount related pop up bars work instantly. The Arch server is in the USA as well.

My gut feeling is that some of what we think are problems caused by server location are not.

But yes - the EU server needs to live up to its name pretty soon.

The amount of ....or lack thereof .....communication on this subject is ridiculous. No other thread has the amount of comments or views that this one does. Almost everyone I know on FB, SWTOR that were really excited about ESo have moved back to their previous games because of the latency in this game. Also, nearly ALL my guildmates across all 5 guilds are gone as well because of THIS issue. Its just mind boggling that this isn't at the top of their to do list.

I'm guessing they are evaluating if it's worth to move the servers to EU, I bet that was the idea behind in the first place to see how the game would take off and if there's enough subscribers. No point for the company to invest on costly data center if they have to fall back to NA after a few months.

The other related point might be that the console version has not yet been released and they'll wait to see what happens with the console sales (same as above) or move it a bit earlier than the release date to get the data center up and running for EU console players.

So I have a record - after a bit of digging, I've found Zenimax have two Class B subnets ( 159.100.0.0/15 ) routing to Frankfurt in Germany via Level 3. It doesn't look like there's infrastructure running on it, however.

They are losing customers BECAUSE the servers are in the US. If they don't understand that I question their intelligence.

Moving EU server to a european location seems more like a dream day by day passing..

I honestly started to believe that moving the server won't fix the latency issues completely. Sure, it will be better but not entirely viable as someone would expect. I think mostly it's a server sided problem and that's what they are trying to avoid/perpetuate... keep us with a hope as long as it takes before the truth comes out. Conspiracy theory? Aye....

Latency is not a myth. Its physics. The world is not using quantum computing yet.

They never said latency is a myth. In fairness, there are also megaserver side speed issues going on. There's constant threads here from US users complaining about responsiveness.

I've been tracking both ping and API latency and the numbers are really not good on both fronts. Zenimax's claim that you will get a good response regardless of location simply ain't true.

At this stage, though, I think latency is just another in a line of issues with this game. People have been stuck at 301 timeout errors since last Thursday (yes, a week ago) with no real response from customer service. That sort of thing will challenge customer retention.

There's a ~150-200ms extra lag from the UK, but you're right overall - there's some real messaging/queuing issues going on under the hood. It's depressing.

My guess at this point is that the EU server will never come to the EU and that the US server will not stay in the US either, if you catch my drift. Way too many problems (bots, lag, serious bugs, billing) and two little communication. Mods have time to edit comments and close threads, but they are not spitting out any useful answers anywhere. Trust is lost, reputation shattered, player numbers dwindling.
    It's really really frustrating.

Actually this point is completely forgotten.
Eu player suffering lag, freeze, deconnection are waiting for the data-center to move in EU.
So when about it ? Can wa have news for it ?
Are you planning to let the Eu server in US ?

With people quitting the game in droves I doubt they will have the funds to ever move the server to EU, so you will just have to live with the current state until they go ftp, then maybe you may have some hope. but I'm not betting on it.

    Well...
WILDST☆R is coming out on the 31th of May, and it HAS AN EU SERVER LOCATED IN THE EU! The 20ms there is like a dream. You get immediate response.
I wanted to play ESO, becouse I liked it better in the betas, but Zenimax f*cked it up so bad, that now it is only irritating... it is not worth it.
Anyhow, I bought this game becouse they said that we will get an EU server. If i had known that this statement wasn't true, I would not have bought it...
So, as I see it: 2 months have passed, and still no EU server located in the EU, I am guessing that it won't be coming in the near future.

My response is: I am going to play WILDST☆R, BECOUSE THEY HAVE EU SERVERS THAT RUN LIKE A DREAM, and I will wait 1 more month for Zenimax to create an EU server in the EU. When that doesn't happen, I am gonna sue Zenimax, for "False/Deceptive Advertising", becouse if I pay for something, and I don't get it... well lets just say, it is not acceptable.

Oh and the Zenimax fanboys wo say that: "They didn't exactly say, when...", don't bother, and face reality...
I know that the developers who are making the game want it to run good, and the management is at fault... that doesn't changes the facts.

And for the support, I only want to say: GET A NEW JOB!

    Bye all, and HF! :)

Correct. ZOS have been sitting on the fence on this one for too long. They've been hedging their bets and I imagine once the game has somewhat settled, a server consolidation is on the cards. Most certainly it cannot be in their financial interests to maintain two datacenter locations, I cannot imagine this game is performing anywhere near their fiscal forecasts.

They probably realise they'll lose a lot of EU players in the process but I guess they have worked out that it's still more financially viable to let them go and keep only one datacentre location up.

I could be wrong but if they genuinely intended to move it they'd have at least availed us of the high level dates by now, because they would have to know these internally.

How much does it cost to run a datacenter?
1000 players bring around 10-15 k/month. Decision about no EU located server will make many thousands of EU players to quit. If running a datacenter would cost 100s thousands/month I would understand their decision, but I highly doubt it.
