I had this unknown error like every 3 out of 4 times trying to change any zone. I have 2 connections at home, my default one is with dynamic IP. Changed to the static IP one and it got fixed. This stupid error has got something to do with this 100%.

I'm back in. Was on the quest "Go to the Harborage". Currently skipping to avoid any zone changes. Game runs fine when I'm not needing to zone.
  • wunahokalugi
Dang it, I bumped the E button. Promptly attempted to zone then,

ERROR An unknown error has occurred. Alt OK

This is not why I payed for 5-days early access and took some vacation. Any thing we can do on our end for mitigation?

Some of you may be interested to know that while mine quits every 2 mins on my broadband connection (EE), I can play perfectly if I tether my iPad Air with 4g to my PC. I rang EE customer service but of course they had no idea what I was taking about and couldn't help. Turning off the router firewall, the pc firewall, using an IP blocker, using a VPN and repairing the install didn't help

Battleping is working for me at the moment. Im using the paid service. I've been playing for 30 mins now and no crash or disconnection. Fingers crossed.

The issue can be reproduced at this point. Wunahokalugi, Level 10, Argonian Dragon Knight. Every half hour or so after it let's me in, I'll keep trying to zone into the Harborage.

went from a 30ms connection to a 188ms connection; is laggy but i don't get booted zoning.

So since this appears to be ISP related, what IP address should I be using for traceroutes for the NA Megaserver?

What I don't understand is that if this is ISP related why can I play Guild Wars 2, Defiance, Neverwinter, The Secret World, WoW, Rift, DC Online, The Old Republic, Star Trek online, and the Wildstar Beta with no issue? My knowledge of computers and such is very limited but I don't see how I am able to play all of that with my ISP but not this one thing and its somehow the ISP's fault.

One thing I've noticed is that the launcher seems to get stuck "initializing" but has no problem letting me get to the login screen. I can get into the game but then everything loads like a movie set. No interactions available until about a minute later when the "unknown error" occurs. If anyone has been following my troubleshooting, you'll know that nothing I threw at the wall stuck.

Add-on. Doubt it's an ISP issue b/c my roommate across the hall can play without any issues for hours on end.

Here is my details, hope this gets fixed today :)
    Tinúviel! Tinúviel!
    He called her by her elvish name;
    And there she halted listening.
One moment stood she, and a spell
His voice laid on her: Beren came,
    And doom fell on Tinúviel

You have to understand how network traffic works. Think of it like driving your car to where the server is. In this example your isp is responsible for the roads in your city, Zenimax is responsible for the the roads in the city that the server is housed in. There is thousands of individual road construction companies responsible for the roads between the cities and states between your ISP's city and zenimax's. If one of those roads between the cities are having issues like nasty potholes or bridges out who do you call? Zenimax? Your ISP? Neither are responsible for those roads and cannot really do anything but email the company in between and hope that someone fixes it. Sometimes those companies fix it, sometimes not. The best you can hope for is that either it gets fixed by the owning company or that one of the other companies that use thier roads notices the problem and puts up a sign to route around it. The reason that you may NOT see the problem with other games is that it will depend alot on where that server is located. If the WOW/Wildstar/etc is in (remember this is just an example to help you understand) austin, tx and the eso server is in dallas, tx, and the road problem is outside of dallas then the other games' server wont be having an issue.

Edit: The only way to fix this if its truely a network issue is to do what is called a traceroute between your computer and the eso servers. that shows you the steps your traffic takes between you and the ESO servers and you can often see exactly which "road/bridge" is the issue and email them. They might or might not fix it.

I work in networking so I know exactly what they go through when its a networking issue and its often immensely difficult to get someone to fix thier stuff.

Hey there, everyone.Thank you all for being patient while we've been looking into the problem.

We want to request some information from you all. If you're still receiving the "Unknown Error" message, please open the launcher, and click the settings gear. Click "About," then select "Game Consultant," and click "Run Tests." This will run a special diagnostic tool that will create a .txt file that will provide us with more information about your machine. Provide us with the report by attaching the file here so we can look into it further. Thank you, guys!

    Well met, JasonL!

Thank you all for looking into this. This "unknown error has occurred" has made the game almost unplayable as the constant disconnects with this error are so abundant that they are frustrating enough to suck the enjoyment right out of the game. I'm always feeling like, "am I going to disconnect?" That's not a fun feeling to have; always worrying about disconnecting and then to have the worry come to light as it consistently happens.

I've attached my report as requested.

Reading through the replies I noticed a mention about ESO possibly being detected as torrenting, so I went into my router and disabled the following blocks:
    Block ICMP
    Block Peer-to-peer applications

I still left the following blocked, however:
    Block IDENT (port 113)

I'll report back if my problem goes away.

I am wondering though... should I set up port forwarding? Mine is the only PC in the house that plays ESO. So, if I wanted to set up port forwarding for ESO, what are the ports I need to forward?

This is still happening to me, also. I can play for just a few minutes, maybe 2 or 3, then the game crashes. I did submit it as a bug, in game, by pressing/bug, so I hope they are working on it. I ran the diagnostic test and tried to upload it here, but I got a message that said it has already been done and would not let me post it.

I have the exact same issue..

It worked well during the beta test and all Sunday. But since Monday morning, it has been a real pain. I read through the six pages but I can't seem to find a real functionning solution out of it.

You NEED to repair this right away ! Hell with everything else !

Yes, I'd like this information too and I'll write up a guide on how to do a traceroute and how to read it and how to identify who to email. We'll email bomb the guys until they fix it.

Still connected on the verizon card; on my personal ISP disconnected 50x + in the last 24 hours.

I'd still have continuous pings to google and pandora playing and ventrilo active without getting disconnected with ESO would die.

I don't think it's your ISP. I think it's peering points to ESO's ISP, or how zone handoffs are handled at the packet layer, being filtered by different ISP's.

We're all guessing without some information from inside.
