I agree with your sentiment and in this case it has always seemed like "roleplayer" was hurled as some kind of deadly insult by the calculator bunnies who don't want ZO to take aways their precious racial passives.

    i.e. troll behaviour.

But language is by definition a shared medium and dynamic. The meanings of words can change very dramatically over time.

Yes, language is dynamic, to a point, but that doesn't mean we just have to accept, for example, a small number of trolls' (or anyone else's, for that matter) decision to render the meaning of a, well established, word meaningless.

In fact, that would be a pretty silly thing to do, wouldn't it?

We wouldn't allow someone to serve us up a plate of dog poop and call it dinner, would we?

So, why do we accept this?

The thing about the internet, is that it obviously helps share ideas really, really fast...

The problem is, those ideas do not, necessarily, have to be good ideas.

In the past, a meme, or a joke, or a new use of a word, or whatever, had to seem at least somewhat sound, or funny, as otherwise it would be rejected by someone, somewhere down the line, as it was passed mainly via word of mouth.

But, now, it can be any old rubbish and it can be spread in seconds, rather than in weeks, or months.

Forget a group, even - just one person can innocently use a word, without even thinking about it and a bunch of people can then pounce on that word and, virtually instantly, make it a new meme.

They may use it, at least somewhat correctly (especially if the original person used it in the correct context) and they may (quite often) not.

Because it is so easy for these memes and random redefinitions to happen, we need to learn to become more selective in what we do and don't accept.

Just accepting that, because a few people have used something in a certain (especially irrational) way, that must be the way it now is, is a huge mistake.

That is allowing yourself and others to be bullied into submission and for the language, in general, to fall apart.

    Why do that to yourself?

You can use your power of choice to reject a new usage of word, just as easily as they used theirs to accept it.

If it's a good use of the word, go with it.

If it's not, don't encourage it, or spread it.

This is a from a Sherlock Holmes book.

    http://thetaleofsirbob.blogspot.com/2013/07/watson-and-other-excitable-characters.html
In the bedroom he made a rapid cast around and ended by throwing open the window, which appeared to give him some fresh cause for excitement, for he leaned out of it with loud ejaculations of interest and delight.

Well, you could still, correctly, use the word like that, if you wanted.

It's like the word intercourse can, also, be used to mean social intercourse.

Yes, if you use it like that, it will tend to make people laugh, due to the other meaning of the word.

But, it's not incorrect to use it that way.

    Language can also be contextual.

For all that "roleplayer" might be hurled as a nasty and inaccurate insult, its misuse in that fashion is so common in these forums that I've expanded its definition to include that. Not that I use the word that way myself but I sensibly consider that to be the possible meaning when others use it.

Well, obviously, you have to consider the very real possibility that people are using a word wrongly, when you are trying to understand what they are trying to say; especially if it is a common misuse.

However, as you say, that doesn't mean that you have to accept that misuse as the new, overly-expanded, meaning.

...and you, obviously, don't have to start using it that way yourself.

Slang and colloquialisms are fine, within reason (we all use them and that is normal), but I think we have to be a bit selective, because we have a responsibility to not allow ourselves to descend, even further, into idiocracy.

By the way, I need to know if there is something I can do to reset a lead, if my Antiquarian's Eye is bugging when I enter the area marked on the map?

I used it on the edge of the marked area and it is pointing me in the direction that would lead me outside of the area, again, which obviously can't be right.

Tried going in the exact opposite direction and the digsite is not that way, either.

I guess I not excited anymore, they need to correct it, I'm taking so much time on it... because of the wrong values in ZoS code. Gold Leads take forever to dig.
