    Yeah that's creepy...
Of course, I also find being added as a 'friend' (i.e, gaining a stalker who can now tell when you log in or out) to be creepy, too. :#

    No, that's sweet!
I have gotten such whispers (Neat character/pretty character/cool character) and it always makes me smile. I send back a thanks for the compliment, and that's the end of it. Pretty harmless, in my experience.

However, if it went any further than that, I would ignore, or block if necessary. Fortunately, I've only had nice people message me.

I'll toss out whispers complimenting design choices on characters when one catches my eye. Though I suppose creepy can happen too. All on the approach and intention. Stay hydrated my friends.

    "Your character looks hot/sexy" - me "/offline"

this may be because IRL I'm female and statements to this effect are frightening in many situations. Women & LGBTQ people have a different experience than others often. We very often are vigilant and on guard for our safety.

And as a Male, that reality is very sad. Honestly its such a common fear for women that it makes me feel like i'm defaulted to a guilty until proven innocent impression when in comes to social interaction just cause i was born with junk between my thighs.

I love it when people tell me they like my character, when its done like omg she's perfect I love her outfit and everything! Now if you whisper dirty things about my character and you wanting to do things with her, thats creepy and I don't like it. Extra bonus points for the boy who wanted to know if I looked like my character because he wanted to do things with her. Eww. Generally, no that's not creepy! As long as the compliments aren't overly sexual or suggestive there's nothing wrong with giving them.

I whisper people, too, but in a much more formal way than your example (which, yes, sounds a bit creepy to me, sorry, but "pretty elfie!" is just... no). Usually I say something like "Your character looks really awesome, kudos on your fashion sense!"

I'm female in real life and I do think that women have forgotten how to take compliments. Not every male means harm if they give you a compliment!!! Seems now its extending to our avatars as well. I've gotten complimented in this game many times and none of those compliments were hiding an ulterior motive. They were appreciated and acknowledged by a simple 'thank you'.

A random player once followed me for several minutes and offered me 10k gold to have my female character dance for him, even after after I told him that I was a fat old dude. That was creepy. My wife laughed and laughed at that.

That's funny! I had a similar thing happen. The other player offered me gold to take my clothes off and dance like a Redguard. I responded with, "Don't be a perv." He said, "What do you care? You're a dude, anyway." I didn't tell him otherwise. I said he would have to pay me first. He paid me and I booked. >:)

If I see someone who's put the effort into making their character look great, I'll usually say something like, "Your toon looks AMAZING".

That way, it's more a compliment of their work, rather than the appearance that you find their pixels attractive. ;)

    So I have a question ?

If I'm a 400lbs grown man playing with barbies irl and I'm also playing ESO and my toons are all decked out looking good. And I get a lot of whispers and thumbs up from rp players.

Does that make somebody a potential crazy person ? 😂

Many times I whisper people and compliment them on their characters. However, for me it's more about the charisma their character transmits, instead of just beauty. I also compliment people on their outfits.

I do it from time to time. I'll tell a player they look really cool if I liked their outfit.

I never thought someone would find this sort of behaviour creepy, in my opinion thats being a snowflake , but regardless of what I think this was an interesting read for me.

I've received compliments on my character before, or questions about my clothing. It's usually pretty innocent, so I take it in stride. *shrug* It's not like they can stalk me or anything, at least not for very long.

The way you handle it is just fine. I suppose you could give it a little more separation, not say "You are pretty" but "Hey, you made an awesome looking character." That way it's clear you're complimenting the player's artistic sense and skill at using the game systems to make something unusually impressive. It's a meta comment that is clearly not meant in an RP manner.

I tend to do that in GW2 when someone's done something amazing with their character looks, and a happy thanks is the only result I've ever gotten. I also like when someone compliments my own designs. Heck, in RL I will compliment pretty dresses or hairstyles I see on people in the grocery store. Helps that I'm a middle aged woman walking with my middle aged husband, lol, it's pretty obvious I'm just making a sincere compliment. I get lots of comments on my own hair, in fact (it's knee length) and those are only creepy when the person starts talking about wanting to use some scissors to cut some off for themselves.

In game it only gets creepy if you try to use it to force open a conversation, or keep following the character, or pile on suggestive comments.

@StabbityDoom what if I told you that some men also sometimes feel this way?
I don't wanto to complain, but when a woman tells me sth like that irl or tries to pick me up, I immediately have a red light turning in my head. Unless they are bad at it, then I just cringe. When you let your guard down it doesn't matter if you are a man or a woman. A single hit to the head from the back and you are down unconcious at someones mercy.
I don't want to disagree with you or argue - I just wanted to let you know that women and LGBTQ people don't have very different experience than straight men. And I say it from my own life experience.
The only difference I can think of is that when a woman walks with a man in the night - a real man, then he is worried not only about his safety but also for hers.

I've had people tell me my so-and-so looks cool, awesome, crazy, out of the blue. I'd say thanks, usually answer a question about armor style, and then we'd go our separate ways.

    That's nice.

I've also had one person on a female avatar randomly stalk me after mentioning my male Imperial looked something to the tune of handsome and beautiful, and then went on this whole spiel about how "A beautiful character implies a beautiful mind x3" "We should get to know eachother!", just imagine that kind of stuff being leveled at you for entirely too long.

    That was creepy.

Just be honest and keep it in passing.

In continuation of my previous comment (with taking other comments into account) I will admit that the only time I have been even close to ‘creeped out’ by a whisper (relating to complementing a character) was when I received the reply: “is that how you pick up all of your girls?”

I don’t think my fingers have quite locked up on the keyboard like that before.
For context my initial comment had been “your character’s outfit looks amazing!!!”
    >.>
My response to their ‘pick up’ comment had been “uhhh...I didn’t mean it that way? Never mind.”
Not that it has put me off complementing outfits, but I found that pretty weird.

I also had a guy (I assume by his badass character appearance) argue with me endlessly that his character was not ‘extremely cool looking’ as I described it. If you’re reading this and realise it was you, dude, it was awesome looking and I get the final word.
