Imo, there's simply not enough custom options in this game to make any character stand out. Almost all races look similar to some extent. Yeah, there are differences and you can sometimes get an outlier, but I could count on one finger how many toons I've stumbled upon and thought they looked so much different from the majority of other race specific toons.

I think we all think our toon looks special if we have sank X amount of time into its creation, but the reality is, when viewed from someone else, they're just another run of the mill character. I think folk are confusing outfits/armours for actual character uniqueness. For example, there is only so much nose shaping you can do. It's the same nose all day long, just the slider is more to the left. Same goes for almost every other facial setting. I'm not shitting on the people creating these characters, it's the pretty limited character creator we have been given that is at fault.

Agreed we still need a hair color pack. Maybe add another 10 shades of skin to all races. Unlock the body and face sliders to got like 10 clicks further both ways add some new sliders head width, calve size, wrist width, break horns and eye lashes into seperate categories. Seperate scars and body tattoos into seperate items.

well sure we can't all be unique individuals without a few bits of body and/or facial similarities, but that doesn't mean that there can't be pretty characters (heck, there's pretty NPCs even).

you don't have to be unique to be pretty; for me, a lot of times a certain couple of hairstyles can really make a character look pretty or not, and so a lot of my compliments get directed out towards them simply for having the pretty hairstyle, and a face that isn't butt-ugly or something.

If I compliment someone's armour, the first thing I usually ask is what motifs/style pages it is, especially since I'm kind of a motif-maniac in the game anyways. so usually, most of my friendly compliments are aimed more at the appearance/face of the actual character, rather than what they're wearing.
Shortly after the formation of the Ebonheart Pact, a Nord woman was given a tour of the Tribunal Temple. When later asked about the experience, she seemed upset. Suffice to say, the Dunmer were not pleased to hear this, and thus they inquired further.
"Well," the Nord frowned, "the priests were very angry and unwelcoming. They kept shouting things at me like "you can't drink that mead in here!" and "somebody stop her, she's running naked!" and "we can't catch her; she's covered in grease!""

Depends on how it's said, but so far I only find it nice when someone compliments or find my character interesting. Same with vice versa. I like to tell people if I like the appearance of their character or outfit and so far people have only seemed happy about it.

I've had whispers to a couple of my Bretons, one of them is cute, the other a bit over the top with first mate costume and tats as well as the metal half-cage on her face.

The cute one got "Oh, what race is that girl, she's so cute!" The other one got "Wow, that character really stands out!" which I took in a "good" way. Neither creeped me out.

Now the player who whispered to one of my "fully covered" Bosmer that s/he was looking for a dominatrix.... well, that one wasn't creepy either, just obviously instantly ignored.

Being whispered does feel quite personal, but if you are genuinely just being complimentary, that’s cool.

    I agree.

Whispers from random strangers is always unexpected, and you can’t predict the mindset of someone you don’t know. Good intentions? Bad intentions? I assumed good on the few times it happened to me. I’d say most of the players I’ve ever directly communicated with in game have been awesome. Assumption of good comes from said experiences. So yes if polite and complimentary then cool enough.

Sweet? Well, even in the context provided, I’d be hesitant to feel that way. Not creepy, just a bit shocked. Kind of like if in real life if I walk around a corner in a hallway and somebody is standing there. Surprised for a second. Well, a whisper feels like a stranger has shown up in front of me, even if they were already there. Nothing necessarily bad about that. Complimentary whispers are happy surprises I suppose.

It's not about looking pretty. Looking pretty is subjective at best. There is next to no unique player made characters to be had. For every character you have made, take the costumes etc off, there will be 100's more that are more or less a carbon copy of your own. Whether it be a large bearded orc wearing a wedding dress, or a cutesy little female Bosmer, they all look the same relative to what others have made 1000's of times over in the game. Hair, the scars etc doesn't change that. Giving us options of actual stand-alone facial pieces (noses, eyes, lips etc) would change that to some extent.

I agree that it depends a lot on how you say it.

"Your character is really pretty" or something similar is fine. "Hey cutie" is borderline. "Hey cutie" followed by constantly running/jumping around them like a puppy begging for attention and following them around the map for a while is either creepy or desperate. And following them around without ever saying anything is just desperate.

I once had a guy follow my female breton all around Daggerfall for about 15 minutes, and every time I stopped moving he'd run in front of me and wave, then use the lute emote. Never actually spoke, just rushing around begging for attention. I'm not even sure what he expected me to do in response to that, but I just ignored him until I was done and then teleported to another map and hoped he couldn't follow me.

For what it's worth I've found what works well, both in real life and in games, is to be a bit more specific. Say something like "I love how you've done your hair" or "that's a really nice armour set, and the dyes look great". Especially with women who sadly are often used to the idea that an unexpected compliment from a stranger is the start of an attempt at flirting which could quickly turn nasty if they don't react with the expected level of enthusiasm.

    Depends on how its worded.
Something like "your HOT" would be creepy, imo
Something like "That's a very beautifull looking character you've created", would be a (good) compliment imo.

Only once, and in Guild Wars 2, i was complemented and asked about a female character.
(i am male but have both male and female characters).
Same as in ESO, in GW2 u can mix armour pieces (head, chest, etc) from sets to create a different look.
In GW2, someone liked and asked what pieces i used.

Some people find it creepy. I once whispered a female gnome in WoW that their pink hair was pretty. There was a pause and then they ran away.

I felt terrible. They could have been a kid worried about stranger danger. No one knows who is behind the avatar. So now I confine my compliments to in-person or group/guild.

Even though I’m 100% not interested, I still catch myself evaluating wether or not to compliment someone.
I still do, but it’s rare. I usually run away right after lol

So I'll cut right to the chase on this one. Sometimes if I see a really pretty character, I'll whisper the user and tell them their character is pretty. (kudos to ESO for making such beautiful people).
But do people find this flattering, or creepy?
For context, the text is usually just something simple ranging from "pretty elfie!" to "that's a really beautiful character" or such. I have no other ulterior motives. Not trying to hook up or ERP or try and schmooze for gold or anything. I just want to hopefully make someone smile from the compliment. Most of the time I get positive reactions from this, but I'm just curious to know what the forums think. If some random person came up and told you your character was pretty, would you find it creepy? sweet? or something else entirely?

If I see someone whisper me about my character or that they are checking me up, I allways feel flattered for all my time put into making a beautifull character. However I know that there some people who get offended over anything and everything and will eagerly jumpt into any occasion to explode with selfrighteous hatred to terrorize others.
