Once when I was doing crafting writs, I passed by another player who had made almost the exact same outfit as I had. Including dyes used. We both froze, backed up to the other and had a second look, then almost simultaneously whispered eachother complimenting the other's outfit. It turned into an exchange of silly and fun complimenting. Twas a lovely day.

Have simultaneously complimenting another person just once before that, but then we both had very different outfits. Which was also while crafting...Hmmm. Is the crafting areas ESO's fashion hot spots?

Depends. If it's "pwhoar look at that - sexy grrr", pretty creepy. If it's "Congrats you did a great job with your character", not so much.

I've had people whisper, "Are you a vampire?" and I would say, " No, I'm just pretty. " But now I AM a vampire, and no one tells me I'm pretty 😢

One would think that after spending time in character design someone will compliment on it, but the. again there is a lot of people who don’t know how to handle social interactions and the person gave you an immature reply.

Imo, there's simply not enough custom options in this game to make any character stand out. Almost all races look similar to some extent. Yeah, there are differences and you can sometimes get an outlier, but I could count on one finger how many toons I've stumbled upon and thought they looked so much different from the majority of other race specific toons.

I think we all think our toon looks special if we have sank X amount of time into its creation, but the reality is, when viewed from someone else, they're just another run of the mill character. I think folk are confusing outfits/armours for actual character uniqueness. For example, there is only so much nose shaping you can do. It's the same nose all day long, just the slider is more to the left. Same goes for almost every other facial setting. I'm not shitting on the people creating these characters, it's the pretty limited character creator we have been given that is at fault.

    Agreed 100%.

One of the things I dislike the most about the game was the cost savings in making the characters. We did not get 10 races, we got one race with 8 different heads and Khajiit and Argonians.

I wish the orcs looked more brawny. The high elves a bit more slender etc. As you pointed out, from a distance everyone looks the same. Same animations, same spell effects, same bodies.

I think on one hand its to be expected, there can only be so much variety in an MMO, but on the other hand I think of WOW or Warhammer or GW2 and their races are far more varied and unique.

    Ohh well.

that's amazing! I love when that happens. ^^
but yeah, crafting hubs are usually hotspots, especially since there's usually dye tables there too to flaunt a new look. That's generally where I compliment the pretty people too.
Shortly after the formation of the Ebonheart Pact, a Nord woman was given a tour of the Tribunal Temple. When later asked about the experience, she seemed upset. Suffice to say, the Dunmer were not pleased to hear this, and thus they inquired further.
"Well," the Nord frowned, "the priests were very angry and unwelcoming. They kept shouting things at me like "you can't drink that mead in here!" and "somebody stop her, she's running naked!" and "we can't catch her; she's covered in grease!""

Kind of depends on the context, TBH. "Pretty elfie" would be fine from a female toon, but I'd kind of look askance at a male toon. Put, "You made a..." in front, it wouldn't be creepy from anyone :)

I've had a little weirdness in a couple of other games that was mostly harmless, but if I were less apathetic about life, the universe and everything, I'd probably be creeped out. Some weirdo in GW2 once "said" one of my pretty human toon's names with just enough ellipses and preeeeeeetttyyyyyyy attached that I rode to another part of the map. Had a vaguely lascivious comment directed at my femSW once by a female toon in SWTOR. I just said thanks and that was it.

But everything about human communication is kind of odd anyway. We're a bizarre species-- the weirdest on the planet :D

Its the ones that are using words other than pretty, beautiful, cool and be like daaaaamn that gurl got back, or hey baby, you lookin smexy... thats when it gets weird ... even weirder when they straight up think you're the same gender as your character then fly off the handle with insults when corrected...

Lmao some dude actually tried to hit on my in game based on the appearance of one of my female alts. He got a little defensive when I informed him I was a guy... xD

So I'll cut right to the chase on this one. Sometimes if I see a really pretty character, I'll whisper the user and tell them their character is pretty. (kudos to ESO for making such beautiful people).
But do people find this flattering, or creepy?
For context, the text is usually just something simple ranging from "pretty elfie!" to "that's a really beautiful character" or such. I have no other ulterior motives. Not trying to hook up or ERP or try and schmooze for gold or anything. I just want to hopefully make someone smile from the compliment. Most of the time I get positive reactions from this, but I'm just curious to know what the forums think. If some random person came up and told you your character was pretty, would you find it creepy? sweet? or something else entirely?

Given a massive part of ESO is fashion, I cannot see why someone would not welcome a compliment for the effort they have put into creating their characters look.

For me a huge part of the enjoyment I gain from ESO, is creating new looks for characters, I spend a fair amount of time and effort, not to mention gold, getting my characters to look good. I love it when someone stops and is clearly checking you out! I love it even more when someone takes the time to say directly that they like what I have created.

We need more compliments! Go forth and compliment.

I whisper genuine heartfelt complements to players that have customized characters that really catch my eye, male or female. I appreciate the efforts I have seen from players using the outfit system , combined with mounts, pets, skins, etc to make a truly awesome looking character. My complements are very rare however, as I have seen a lot cool looking characters. I try to complement only the ones who really stand out, but appreciate the ones that are close. If that's creepy, oh well. It wasn't meant to be.

I honestly don't understand how you can get creeped out by someone complementing your character in game. If the're rude you can just block them, they can't really do anything to you.

I don't really compliment other character's prettiness but I do compliment their outfits and ask about what motifs they are using. Also I sometimes get involved in some silly banter with some goofballs hanging around doing silly things or some rpers. It can be really nice and fun. I never ran into anyone as dedicated to trolling me as some accounts that were posted in this thread. The only rude players I meet are those you find in more competitive areas, like dungeons or pvp. Overworld is usually pretty chill.

I've spent a lot of time customizing my characters, so when I get a (non-creepy) compliment I just say thanks - probably not surprisingly my short, cute, and curvy as possible bosmer has gotten some creepy compliments and random following around asking for groups, but honestly the character that has gotten the most is my breton stage 4 vampire. Non-vamp mode she is kind of plain, but in stage 4 vamp, with red lipstick on, she is striking and has amazing RBF :D I get compliments on her overall look (outfit and mount) as well as her face.

I tend to make my ladies all (what I find) beautiful, but then I rough them up...scars, dead eye(s), war paint, non-traditional hair styles, burns, heroic or furious personalities. Those don't typically get compliments on their looks but sometimes they get outfit compliments. I have a couple that are stereotypically feminine (casters), but my melee I reflect that they get in the thick of things and get some battle damage. :)

As others have said, context is everything. What you say, how you say it, where and when you say it, and what you do afterwards... these are all relevant.

Honestly, one good test is: would I say this to *anyone*, if I knew who they were in real life, regardless of age, gender, etc.? If you wouldn't be comfortable saying it to a 6'2 burly dude, or a little kid, or your grandma, then it's probably not appropriate to say to any stranger online.
