U21 launch day load times and how you can help

Next Monday with the PC launch of Update 21, we’ll be implementing some code related to ESO’s database that will allow us greater flexibility with updates and maintenance as it continues to grow over time. Due to this change, after downloading the patch on Monday, you are likely to encounter a very long load screen upon first logging into the game. This will only occur the first time you log in after character select, and it will not affect subsequent logins. That said, the length of the load screen could vary anywhere between 5-10 minutes to a couple hours. We understand this is far from ideal and is frustrating on launch day, but it’s a necessary evil just this one time.

Now, this loading is actually directly tied to the total number of bank items, inventory items, and mail attachments everyone has. This means if you’re able to clear out excess items in your inventory and attachments before maintenance begins Monday morning (or even just reduce them), this will greatly help the amount of loading the client will need to do! Additionally, once you’re at the load screen, please just wait until you’ve made it into the game; closing the client will not speed things up.

Thanks for your understanding, everyone, and we look forward to Wrathstone and Update 21 launch in just a few days!

Understandable, thanks for the heads up

I'm guessing since storage chests are more or less an attachment of our inventory(code wise) that they will also effect this?

Are you telling me that this load screen has to finish, if it takes to a couple hours and I close the game, I will have to wait another couple hours?

Out of interest, why can’t this be done during normal maintenance - Why does it have to be activated upon login?

If the client is needed to convert the database, it's a sign that people, who will be able to manipulate network code or client behaviour may end up getting billions of gold, duplicate items etc.

    Well RIP my hoarding

I was planning on clearing out a lot of inventory this weekend anyway. I just have way too much stuff that leads to me having less fun.

I have hoarding issues in every game.

    A couple of hours????

How can the game run so poorly that inventory space and bank space is tied to load screens......... like..... what

That might also depend on ISP. It takes some people hours or a full day to download the full game. Takes 20 minutes for others. I suspect that if you have fast Internet service, you can have full inventory and not hit that worst case number.

Will session time out rules during the login process be suspended, or will your item tabulation be seen as viable activity and thus not be terminated automatically on your end?

So... you're saying that with my 8-week mail backlog, nearly full 200 inventory on most characters and nearly full 480 bank space... I'm going to be screwed?

Why do you hate hoarders?

What if I start a thread on the forums complaining about experiencing a long load screen? Will that speed things up?

Yes and for each time you spam !dragon and !drops in the thread it would deduct seconds off the wait time.

@ZOS_GinaBruno are there contingency plans internally for item recovery if this process results in vanishing items from our bank/inventory/storage chests/craft bags? It has happened before, so this is particularly concerning.

I'm actually pretty worried about this because in PTS weeks 1-4, there were items missing in my mail attachments. Only during the current PTS week 5 was the mail okay. But the fact that this problem existed and wasn't fixed until literally the final week of PTS doesn't exactly make me feel at ease, ya know?

    Couple questions actually @ZOS_GinaBruno :
    • This seems to be happening across characters, so we have to to clean out the inventory of all toons. Does this include worn gear?
    • Do storage boxes count as inventory?
    • Does Craft Bag count as inventory?
    • Does sent, unclaimed mail reflect on the account that sent it?
    • If it takes longer than the innactivity timer, is there a chance of being kicked before log-in?
    • Will houses/placed furnishings effect this in any way?

Can someone explain why this would be happening, exactly? I mean, why is this inventory stuff being handled client-side as opposed to server-side, and why all characters at once, instead of one at a time? And how could it possibly take a couple of hours? What are they going to do? Are they going to load stuff off the server, somehow mess with it client-side, and confirm with server again?

I'm not criticizing it, I just can't remember a single case of something like this in 30+ years of gaming. Just wondering what they're doing.

this absolutely freaks me out - I´m gonna make an inventory list of just about everything including my houses and take screenshots...
but seriously couldn´t you tell us earlier - this will take up a hell of time just to make sure ZOS did not screw up!

I wanted to echo the questions about storage chests and items in houses. Because if it includes items in player housing with my 37 completed projects, then... yikes. XD

@ZOS_GinaBruno Can you change the load screen messages from the current assortment to a note explaining this issue please for the first log in after the update? MotD is nice, but having it directly on the actual load screen would help solve a lot of issues before they become issues.

Thanks for the heads up. Sometimes, there are necessary evils, and hopefully whatever's being done will shorten load times in the future.

I definitely want to reiterate as several other insightful commenters have already pointed out that you absolutely MUST put a message up that everyone loading the game cannot miss. Explain it as it was explained here. Otherwise, it's going to be pandemonium.

    Now, a question:

Does the game need to be connected to the internet during this process?

Or could I say, start this load screen process and then leave my laptop running in my car while I drive home even if it's got no internet connection during that time?

Thank you for the heads up, at least! I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend!
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

Wonder why it would require character login instead of just extended maintenance. Is it because they don't want to run whatever change on inactive accounts? What happens if someone comes back in a month and doesn't hear about this? Every returning playing going to have to go through this? Or maybe they are applying it to all accounts in some kind of background queue and login prioritizes you?

Another thought: How will this impact the "come back to Tamriel" free weeks you guys like to do? Someone who's been away for six months decides to give us a try again, they login, and suddenly their login takes potentially hours, with no clear indication as to why?
