Try dueling on a sorc not using crutches (no pets, no attro, no minecamping, no doubleshieldstack, no destroult). It does not work. Some people use all, some people use what they deem not as crutchy as other things.

I completely agree with you. I don't blame anyone for playing their class with the tools given to them. Some things may feel cheesier than others, but that's just how it is. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, even if I may not like it. However, I do condemn people trying to devaluate others effort and play choices just because they don't like it.

It's very different. If I had those lazily boosted up stats, I wouldn't need to camp mines, shieldstack or even use atronach, unlike some of our 'best duel sorcs' that do just that.
The only reason why sorcs go for pet(s) nowadays is to get the last necro bonus + possibly trainee or physique, depending on where they're at (pve, cyro, ic). So in a way, when I say crutches, I'm not even talking about pet sorcs primarily, they're not hard to kill when you know how to do it. I'll correct myself. I talk about lazy sets like necro/trainee/physique, and stacking of those. The point is, that labeling players as 'best' & 'worst' takes a little bit more knowledge and insight into the game itself. Most people don't understand that stacking magicka to the extremes benefits sorcs (and nbs) more than anyone, and as Min mentioned, there probably is a point where it becomes more beneficial to you to add more magicka, than a set like slimecraw.
My comment was a correction for Mr. Subversus, who might or might not have labeled a lazy sorc as a 'great dueler', or in other words, I was just trying to let him know why certain players seem to enjoy a little bit of success in terms of dueling, when in fact they aren't really much skilled at all. Dueling is fun only when certain rules are applied. I don't have time to balance or talk to other people who would like to balance duels, tourneys and so on, so my input for the next dueling tourney was simply, crafted sets only, with the exception of jewelry such as willpower/agility/endurance. The reason why, should be obvious to anyone who has been PVPing for long now.
Also, apart from proc sets, stacking of proc sets and so on, the worst thing in the game right now (in terms of sets) are in my opinion, lazy sets.
Are we all sorcs dumb for working on our defense and other aspects of our gameplay, instead of just stacking magicka or whatever it is that you can stack through the roof? Am I a jackass for running mighty chudan (I don't have pirate and I have a feeling it will get a shield nerf eventually anyway), 2 reinforced heavy pieces and 5 impene light ones? No, I'm not. I work on all aspects of my build, including defense and sustain. These lazy sets are really getting out of control, thank God trainee was nerfed, I was gonna go for it too if it didn't...
One got nerfed, 2 more to go and bye bye insane stat pool characters.
edit; To confirm just how broken these sets are, I just came out of IC with my new physique/potence combo (55k mag, didn't test with warhorn but I feel like it will get closer to 60k) and I can confirm that there's no way in the world that a single magicka oriented character is ever going to dent this, let alone kill it. Swap physique for trainee (before nerf, works so far) and same thing in dueling or small scale PVP. And people apply for tournaments with this stuff... I don´t agree with banning dropsets for tournaments though - simply because it´s going to exclude people from participating by not wanting to craft gear for one occasion.
@LegendaryMage what you´re calling lazy sets (or builds) is just personal preference though. There is absolutely no difference in calling attronarch + minecaping lazy playstyle in my opinion.
Boths are ways enabling the char to duel competetively in the small dueling area.
You simply have other ideas of what you want to achieve with your build. Which is totally fine and i understand that 100% - it´s the reason why i don´t enjoy dueling. It does not suit my playstyle or what i want to do with the class.
Edit: There is simply good and bad sets when strictly looking at the strengh of 5p bonuses. What I call lazy sets are sets that add too much stats. Trainee got nerfed rightfully. Proc sets are getting toned down, not just quite there yet. Necropotence is next in line if I had to guess. 7k+ mag for having a scamp (or a shade) on your bars is a joke Derra.
This build here is very good. I wish I had amberplasm, wanted to give it a go, but the next step towards dark exchange is a great move too. Malcolm is a smart sorc and faso as well. I only don't like the fact that pirate skeleton makes your shields 30% stronger for such a long duration (and your hp bar of course), it moves them closer to pve lands than pvp.
edit; When it comes to dueling Derra, there's two types of crowds at the moment. Extremely competitive players that take any advantage they can (ex, well known names with double munduses running right now in Cyro), and then there's guildies that are practicing mostly without cheesy stuff.
You're welcome to come join guildies and have some fun duels with people that aren't pushing these OP builds, not because they don't know about them, but because they see them for what they really are. Crutches that don't last and don't make you a better player. I'm still talking sets here, skills are another topic so let's not mix apples and oranges there. Whether you like Dracane or not, she plays with pets not just in duels but in open world too. It's her preferred playstyle, whether it's "lazy" or not, she doesn't change anything like most people tend to do as soon as they want to duel (CP/gear/skills etc.). My peferred playstyle on stamDK is S+B as my offense bar, 2H as my buff bar. Yours is the opposite, you like DS spamming instead. I don't knock you for that, it's preference.
And personally, I find poisons (especially increase cost poisons) more of a problem than pet sorcs in duels. And you're quite well known for using increase cost poisons in duels as well as open world. Don't see how you can hate on Dracane or anyone else for their build when you use increase cost poisons lol.

I was with him when he theorycrafted it, he had no idea about it supposedly being broken (and it's not), only reason he changed was because collo tournament forbade 7th legion. You know what Kiso, in these last few months or so, I haven't seen a single player that talks more about anything pvp related, than you. Dueling, PVP, guildies, Colo, exploiters (btw some people say you're using double mundus too), community, whatever blah blah, and yet, every time I see you in PVP, you're always riding your mount, doing jack. Every single time. We're all there fighting, you're riding around on your mount, scared to engage anyone. Why don't you talk a bit less and actually PVP a bit more? The only thing that I potentially see as a weak spot for this build, is the potential nerf to pirate skeleton. But, as with most things, it needs to become more wide-spread before people start complaining about tankiness (happened to trainee, vitality potions, poisons and many other things before).3 -

Ah, do you think pirate skeleton will actually be nerfed? I don't think it will be. If it did I might consider going 2 bloodspawn or dropping pirate for another 5 piece. I also think I'll use atro open world possibly next patch for ground control depending on how weak destro ultimate is . And I think faso will do the same, he likes going defensive instead of doing something like slimecraw which I know he dislikes extremely

I'm fairly certain that ZoS will eventually change the way mitigation and shields work. As it is now, shields are receiving the mitigation from pirate skeleton and mistform, which is a little much.Unfortunate magicka warden main.

Lol. Magplar or dk's can sit and hold block but a Sorc can't have a good set bonus to reduce damage? Mist form means you can do no damage and recover no magicka and I don't know of any sorcs that use this ability TBH. I don't think pirate needs a nerf it's the only thing that helps in 1vX survivability wise when facing the proc spam or perma snare and taking damage meta.

Its just a buff that applies to the character, no different from how hardy and ele defender apply to shields. And the same logic for why that is a fair mechanic extends to here. If an enemy player's minor/major berserk increases damage done to shields, why shouldn't major protection decrease damage done to shields?
I don't understand why people wanna pigeon hole everyone into just stacking damage. Sets like troll king and pirate allow you to build defensively, add diversity, and are imo completely justfied so long as proc sets exist. They are like anti-proc sets and bring balance to the proc meta.7 -

I think they might change it eventually, in some of the upcoming balancing updates. 30% stronger shields will probably be a problem to a lot of people in Cyrodiil, once more sorcs go for it. The only thing that I potentially see as a weak spot for this build, is the potential nerf to pirate skeleton. But, as with most things, it needs to become more wide-spread before people start complaining about tankiness (happened to trainee, vitality potions, poisons and many other things before).

I also think I'll use atro open world possibly next patch for ground control depending on how weak destro ultimate is . I'm fairly certain that ZoS will eventually change the way mitigation and shields work. As it is now, shields are receiving the mitigation from pirate skeleton and mistform, which is a little much.
Lol. Magplar or dk's can sit and hold block but a Sorc can't have a good set bonus to reduce damage? Mist form means you can do no damage and recover no magicka and I don't know of any sorcs that use this ability TBH. I don't think pirate needs a nerf it's the only thing that helps in 1vX survivability wise when facing the proc spam or perma snare and taking damage meta.

Its just a buff that applies to the character, no different from how hardy and ele defender apply to shields. And the same logic for why that is a fair mechanic extends to here. If an enemy player's minor/major berserk increases damage done to shields, why shouldn't major protection decrease damage done to shields?
I don't understand why people wanna pigeon hole everyone into just stacking damage. Sets like troll king and pirate allow you to build defensively, add diversity, and are imo completely justfied so long as proc sets exist. They are like anti-proc sets and bring balance to the proc meta.
I agree with you as well, build diversity is great. Problem with sorcs is, as a class they benefit more from max mag than any other, followed closely behind by NBs that utilize harness/dampen. But if and when proc sets are taken out of the picture, 30% less damage buff might be a bit too much in a non-proc environment. I personally went for mighty chudan as an alternative, that's nowhere near as good, but it does help with being able to take a hit or two.1 -

I think they might change it eventually, in some of the upcoming balancing updates. 30% stronger shields will probably be a problem to a lot of people in Cyrodiil, once more sorcs go for it. I'd like to see a fix to proc sets before I'm comfortable with pirate being changed but if they are then yeah that's fine to me, I'd much rather have more raw stats then the defense if I'm as defensive as I am now; I am just forced to run pirate to avoid being run down by meta snare and procs and the massive free damage they get. Even then it is still too much to handle usually.

I disagree. Look at the best players: Hexys, Skaffa, BS/ZS members (just to name a few). They all play in groups more than solo play. Dueling? Most of them rarely duel if at all. A lot of the duelers are newer players who aren't quite as good as the rest (Jeff being an example). Some great players do duel, Dusk/Hyssia being examples but even they play in small groups now more than anything.

Try dueling on a sorc not using crutches (no pets, no attro, no minecamping, no doubleshieldstack, no destroult). It does not work. Some people use all, some people use what they deem not as crutchy as other things.
I´ve tried dueling a lot without using any of the mechanics mentioned and in the end the class is simply lacking the tools to do so. Everything in sorcs toolkit (except for streak - which isn´t that useful in duels) points to a passive/reactive playstyle waiting for your opponent to make a mistake.
In the end it´s about your crutch is worse than my cane and than that guys walker is worse than everything else. The class is simply setup that way.
As you pointed out, Harness is extremely broken, I really don't see them NOT fixing that soon though. Someone at ZOS in charge of maths fell asleep or something.
The downside of course, it's a 8K shield.
I'm getting 11-12K out of dampen. The difference matters when you're fighting a NB with multiple proc sets, so I spend the magicka (without return) on something much more effective. 1 -

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I do think that once more damage sources are toned down, it will be looked at, and perhaps adjusted.Unfortunate magicka warden main.

And the argument can be made that those more durable shields give you greater freedom to safely deal damage and go aggressive, making the damage arguably irrelevant. Arguably. But are a few hundred points on your tooltips worth giving up Major Protection?
Well if the proc rate were 50% I'd tend to agree with you. Or 20%, or heck even 10%. Fact is 6% chance with a cooldown is not worth having the constant extra DPS and bigger shields. 2k magicka from 1 grothdarr and 1 internal is almost 3000k on my build. 3k magicka = 300 spell damage and 2k more tooltip on my shield, which is fairly significant. Add in the fact that its supposedly not even working as intended and my very well not apply to damage shields for Homestead and gg.
Have you play tested it? It procs on any instances of damage, so it procs super quickly if you're taking consistent damage and then has a really long duration to work within. The extra damage is the only argument against it, which comes down to preference.
Slimecraw on your build would be disgusting too, by the way. Pirate is way more survivability than 2x max magicka, and slime is way more damage than 2x max magicka. Using your magicka bonuses is a middle ground...but you don't build to be well rounded or reach a middle ground. That's how players like Faso build. You go balls to the wall max magicka. So I'm left asking what are you trying to achieve with your build? Just max magicka for the sake of max magicka?
Slimecraw was actually a DPS loss on my max magicka build, tested and confirmed by yours truly. I'm testing Slimecraw with a non max magicka DPS build right now for open world when I'm forced by Sabre to slum it in Azura's since my max magicka build is gimped too much without CP. What I build for highest burst DPS in open world, which is a combination of spell damage and max magicka. QAM I believe goes for max magicka all the way, you do get bigger shields but less damage since your spell damage is lower. But again it all comes down to preference and playstyle. Some people like to be super tanky on sorc which is fine! I have a little stam DK if I want to tank. Plus if I survive being swarming by enemies on my sorc I like it to be because of my skill, choices, reaction, and reflexes, not because of RNG on a set. ymmv.
Jesus 2x flat max magicka bonuses outweigh 8% bonus damage? At what point do bonus magicka amplifiers surpass minor berserk? I.e. Which abilities out of bound armor and inner light and meteor etc do you need on the bar to cross that point, and how close is the comparison in your build? Slimecraw blows magicka bonuses out of the water in a 42k magicka build. I'd have thought it would continue outscaling magicka since it's a large multiplicative bonus that applies after all your max magicka bonuses, but I could be wrong since I haven't pushed magicka so high.
Also how'd you test? Looking at tooltips or full combos or what? I'm curious of how these numbers line up.
Well there´s a lot of flat % max magica to be found in the game. It´s inevitable at some point max magica outperforms literally everything else (and with every CP cap increase magica becomes more desirable compared to atleast spelldmg).
I´m suprised you can outperform 8% flat dmg thought - that points at the bonus being calculated wrong.
Bigger basedmg = more to get multiplied
bigger magica pool to begin with = less dmg increase in total per magica bonus
In theory it should not be possible to work as described by tamerlin.
The question is where is the break point? 52K? 55K? Where does two 1K max Magicka bonuses break out ahead of 8% flat? It seems like the higher you go max Magicka, the LESS losing 2,000 MM (200 spell damage) will affect a build over a flat 8% increase.

2000 MM off of a 54.000 MM build is a 3.7% loss
52,000? 3.8%
40,000? 5%
The less MM you have, the bigger damage impact of removing 2K MM.
So if you're telling me you'd rather have 4% more damage and roughly 4% higher shields rather than 8% damage. I'll buy that. That sounds balanced.
So I have to ask: Was the testing done with magicka enchants on slimecraw? Did you use a medium and heavy slimecraw, so you could keep the undaunted bonus?
PS: I thought ZOS patched out all of the % increase MM sets except for like.. ancient grace (which is like 4%, or 80 Magicka lost taking out 2,000). Necropotence is a flat amount. Destro mastery is a flat amount, etc.
Creating a build where two max magicka bonuses surpass Minor Berserk in damage added is more complex than simply hitting a max magicka threshold.
Slimecraw amplifies tooltip damage, which is a function of max magicka and spell damage. Both of these are functions of flat additions and percentage amplifiers.
So I recognize three thresholds at play. You hit on a middle ground between two, but I intend to draw a distinction and make a guess about Tam's build:
1) The build must not exceed a certain threshold of spell damage, as spell damage will increase Slimecraw's contribution to damage independent of any max magicka bonuses.
2) The build must contain a sufficient threshold of percentage max magicka amplifiers, such as Inner Light and Bound Armor, to pump maximum value out of our two max magicka bonuses. I count 39% from IL + Bound Armor + meteor + entropy + Undaunted passives + racials + Ancient Grace. I consider that barely practical for PvP, but I could be forgetting some.
3) The build must not exceed a certain threshold of other flat magicka bonuses from gear, as these will be amplified alongside our two Undaunted max magicka bonuses, will contribute damage to the build independent of them, and will increase Slimecraw's contribution independent of them.
These three thresholds are not set in stone, but instead vary relative to each other. The more spell damage you have, the more damage Slime will contribute, so the more max magicka amplifiers you'll need to make two max magicka bonuses stronger. But also, the more spell damage you have, the fewer other sources of flat max magicka you can have because they increase Slime's contribution without affecting the undaunted bonuses' contributions as well.
Accumulating other flat max magicka bonuses is a complicated reaction. A build like Necro + Physique can top 60k max magicka without Bound Armor or Inner Light on the bar. That's a lot of base tooltip damage from magicka, but our two undaunted magicka bonuses won't be amplified much.. In order for Slime to be inferior in such a build, spell damage would have to be severely minimized, and there will come a max magicka threshold which the other flat bonuses must not exceed.
Then there are builds like Necro + Ancient Grace + master staves with tons of Mages Guild abilities and Bound Armor on the bar. These also top 60k magicka. However because flat magicka contributions are lower than the above example but percentage amplifiers are higher, our two undaunted magicka bonuses will hold a lot of relative weight compared to other sources of spell damage and max magicka.
I would wager Tammy is using at least one low max magicka set like Lich. I know he's not using a big magicka set like Necro, Physique, or Trainee because he isn't using pets and has lower max health. He might be using Ancient Grace, but I don't know how that set weighs up against Willpower for his build. Grace requires a big magicka bonus to be efficient, but a big magicka bonus would work in Slime's favor just like Willpower.. Complicated!
TLDR: I haven't tested for specific numbers, but I project that a build where two 1pc max magicka bonuses offer greater tooltip damage than Slimecraw will contain low spell damage, very high percentage max magicka amplifiers, and (crucially) only moderate other sources of flat max magicka from gear. And the more of either spell damage or max magicka that it has, the less effective those 1pc magicka bonuses become, and the more effective Slime becomes.
I leave you guys to draw conclusions from all this.
