You've lost my respect. Gamble boxes fuel an extremely unhealthy behavior. They're a slippery slope that there's no recovering from. RIGHT NOW they're just cosmetics. Then they contain other bonuses. Then they contain an exclusive set. It's all downhill. I've no respect for any developer who even remotely thinks gamble boxes are a good idea and are healthy for the community.
Here's an idea. STOP. CYCLING. COSMETICS. If I want to buy a lightning horse let me buy a lightning horse. Don't remove it from the shop for "exclusivity". Instead do a sale. 30% of for 1 month a year for lightning horse. You don't understand how many cosmetics I'd of bought if you'd stop removing them.
Thanks for ruining my one and only MMO that I still had hope for. I guess I'll just be done with MMOs. You've ruined my last bit of passion for MMOs.

First, Crown Crates will be available later this year, and will only include cosmetic or convenience items. You'll find things like potions and other consumables, pets, costumes, and - yes - sometimes even mounts. This will give you a chance to try and obtain previous limited time offers, or even some very unique items as Matt mentioned. It will not include things like armor or weapons.
In the event you get an item that you already own, you can exchange it for a currency called Crown Gems which will allow you to buy a different item of your choice.
Now, Gina, show that you are honest at ZOS - and give us the chance table for these items - an honest one - this is the only thing to get an acceptance for this and to show that this is not just a blatant cash grab and preying on gambling addicts. Be honest with us and show us, that there is a reasonable chance to get these items, then we might accept it - but if it is like in Archeage with percentages of 0.1%, 0.01% and lower, then this cannot be accepted and some of us will never spend another dime on this game.
Knowing ZOS history with RNG, I expect the worst.
Well, it's their loss - it is about 180,000 crowns, which I will not spend on this game per year, and I would have played for long, but so I will leave when my ESO+ runs out in August 2017 and not spend a single US$ on this game until then - it's their loss.
Not to forget about that bunch of ESO gold edition packs, which I wanted to give as a gift to role play friends around christmas - this will as well not happen now. Nor do I need houses, and I would have bought like 12 of them - if not more - so be it - they do not want my money in a fair deal, they rather go for gamble.
I'm lucky my ESO+ is month by month so I've cancelled. Going to uninstalled tonight, which leaves loads of space for a new game. Might treat myself
Don't be rash and uninstall from game you love . Just don't support monetarily things that are cash grab . Speak out on social media for change and enjoy what you've already purchased . If game goes f2p and gameplay options get locked behind pay wall , then I would uninstall as it is hopeless at that point . Stay vigilant until the time comes my friend .
Indeed @Cazzy, these boxes will not be there in the next few weeks - and the last word about those might not be spoken yet as well. You can still enjoy the game and wait and see - the majority is against it in this poll, maybe ZOS will rethink their stand on this. It might just not be such a good idea as they thought it would be - and maybe they will get this from our reactions.
Points @ZOS_GinaBruno and @ZOS_JessicaFolsom to the poll. ZOS "claims" to listen to our feed back and the major of players are saying "By Oblivion, NO!" This is a good chance for ZOS to prove that they do indeed listen to their players.
The only 'mystery box' I'll ever buy is from Archie McPhee (they're pretty great).
They are clearly already committed to this path, and maybe a third of the player base really likes this idea. I haven't been personally interested in a lot of the new features being implemented and planned- barber shop, housing, One Tamriel, now lockboxes... none of them are really my bag.
I've always maintained an attitude of "well, if somebody else likes it, it's good for them"- but if they get to the point where they're offering only things that other people like, well... maybe the whole thing isn't my bag.
If I wanted to shop and play house, I'd be in SecondLife. More gameplay, less cosmetics.
just my 2 crowns.
not the worst of ideas to return to SL - at least there I had fun and I have a couple of nice houses - now when I do not spend money on ESO, I can just rent a sim and have some fun there - I am actually thinking about it now.

O/T. but I worked for a big company in SL from 2006-2009 and made so much money off that place!
If only I could get paid for playing ESO... sigh...

They already made the decision and will not revert it . Only can hope F2P doesn't get thrown in with it . Don't support cash grabs . Stay away from it and maybe marketing will get the hint eventually but probably not .

Well, I am already emotionally detaching from ESO - not really in the mood to even login today. It somewhat feels like when you realize that you are living with the wrong partner, you do not want to believe it at first, but you feel it more and more - and it hurts more to stay than to eventually go. You don't want to, but you have to, for your own sake - and I have such a feeling currently and this is not making me happy.

I ran this through my cracker jack decoder ring and here is what came out....We know some of you don't like this, but the people who handle the money here don't care.
I'm sure most of the devs and team don't like this direction as it gives the game they have worked so hard on a negative perception, but the money people who have no worked the long hours or invested their lives in the game don't care what they think either.

The problem here is that they DO NOT UNDERSTAND why we are upset - if they would understand it, they would rethink their decision. You are possibly right, they just do not care - I just wonder if this is, because they game is not doing as well as they claim. Maybe the first ROI to the investors is up to be paid out and their wallet is not showing the "healthy" sign. Maybe that is a desperate move from the management, which sits on the ejection seat and does not want to experience how this seat works. I really have my doubts now about how healthy this game really is - it has enough players, but maybe not enough who are paying on a regular basis.
And thinking about it my conscience is whispering to me "don't feed the dead dog, don't feed the dead dog" - maybe I really shouldn't.

That's how I'm feeling.

Sorry Gina, but I've seen this way too many times now.
SWG started the same thing with "The Card Game" and said almost to the tee what you have posted here. After no1 bought the cards, the mysteriously included "buff cards" (power). BTW, "The Card Game", even with selling power, did NOT save the game for SOE and it closed a couple of years later. Everyone knows that SOE was sold by Sony and Daybreak just cancelled their "new" games.
I was beta for STO, bought the lifer sub ($300.00 list price). STO had the absolute best PVP (space) before F2P of ANY MMO I've ever played. Then, came "lockboxes". About the same kind of post you've made here also, "all cosmetics included". No1 bought the keys and ships got included. Now? The store is the ONLY way to progress your player character. Out of there and I'm supposed to have thousands of store points over there from my "lifer". It's not fun in PVP to NOT have the latest and greatest and it's also NOT fun to see the guys try and PVP without all the sold power and get nothing more than "vaped" due to it. (1-shot kills). So, PVP died over there, so much in fact, that a developer came to the PVP forums and made a post of "we could take PVP out of the game and no1 would even notice".
SWTOR? Thank God I wasn't around to see that fiasco with their "Gambling boxes". Was 1 of the millions who left in the 1st 90 days. (and I played Galaxies for 9 years). I still ck the forums every now and then, along with TOR status, and from the status, it appears that TOR can't even fill 2 servers now after starting with how many? 300+?.
ESO? I'm subbed, bought a costume, got a mount, got 1 of the pets, bought the banker, and the merchant. Bought the imp addition recently. (days ago) so I'm not adverse to paying for things, nor do I believe that F2P players should get everything without supporting the people who put the game out. However, I'm surely NOT going to sit back and watch a game I'm invested in (AGAIN) have management and developers totally destroy their own creation yet again. ZOS may start off by saying "cosmetics only" but power WILL BE INCLUDED, you can bet on it and have a safer bet than what you'll EVER get out of a lockbox.
There's a reason why your management/developers are going to this and I would imagine that the reasoning is the same as the reasoning will be for selling power, and the exact same reason why all these other games have lost with this also, "No-one is buying the cosmetics". And that justification is enough for you guys to go down the same exact road that these other developers/studios went down.
Even with just this announcement, I have lost about 95% of my interest in this game and if my sub survives the day, I'll be surprised.

Speculation as to how well this game is doing is speculation, but frankly when I survey the interest ESO gets on reddit and MMO press websites compared to other MMOs, it suggests ESO is actually one of the more succesful Western MMORPGs.
Besides, to quote a redditor from r/mmorpg:
"So basically b2p + subscription + dlc + cash shop (mounts, costume, motifs, emotes, hair style) + RNG box
Thats so much $$"
Gamble boxes generate a lot of revenue for many games (games like DOTA 2 basically live off them), the most likely reason why they're being introduced is ZOS wants to try this gold mine for themselves.
Can you imagine walking into a store wanting to buy that newest graphics card, but the only way to buy it was to purchase a box of random old cards, RAM and cables with a 1% chance that the card you want is thrown in there?
Don't worry though, if you don't get the card you want you can exchange your stuff for some in-store currency and select from the box in the corner over there full of different old garbage that you probably also have no need for or want.
Best part is you can always try again! It's all in the name of fun!
Is it any wonder that MMO's, err, I mean this fictional store in question, love this approach?

It's just bad business.
Just wait until you see Tempering Alloys and wax in the box loot table and a mysterious reduction in drop rates in game, because it may take some time but this will come, seen this in EVERY game with RNG boxes.
