What you’re not thinking about here is these are tied to microtransactions largely (crazy mount animations, recalls, etc) and they serve largely as marketing resources when used in town lol. Somebody is gunna see the Titan mount and be like “ooooh boy let me swipe my credit card and get that thing!!”
You're right and it works. It's like that for the outfits and skins we wear too. We're just walking billboards for the crown store.

I think there are many people who are 20+ or even 30+ who enjoy sparkly glowy noisy mounts. Maybe even older. I can't really comprehend it, but I don't think it's just kids/young teens.

Those aren't too bad. I actually don't mind some of the glowy or shiny stuff that matches lore like the vSS skin. What I don't like are the obvious cash grabs that explode, flash, and pulse in your face.

Those astral/celestial/whatever mounts are ridiculous! I don’t think they have particularly obnoxious summons, at least, just look like ESO and My Little Pony somehow produced offspring…

I love my Evergloam and Dawnwood indriks especially! I totally would have bought the Solstice one too, except it’s rather ruined for me by the rider being forced to hold a snowglobe.

Mounts are getting very flashing yes, but while I think it is odd, it never truly bothered me.
Skill sounds and effects however are bothering me. Covering the entire screen and very loud as of late.
Had to lower my master sound to play in peace, and hiding additional effects settings doesn't help.

It bothers me the most with the mounts, the way they look is just taste but the sounds they make I find awful.
I have very sensetive hearing and everytime one of those mounts spawn it makes me jump.
I do like some of the, for instance the black leopard with the bright blue on it, but spawing it jeesz horrible sound.

Would be great if we could turn the spawing sounds off.

The only flashy effects that get on my nerves are the recall animations, especially the pink bubble (it obscures my view, lol) and the one with bright blue light - it's in a shade of blue that can trigger my migraines (I have photosensitive migraines from blue/white range colors).

When it comes to mounts, I don't mind the flashy ones that much, as I tend to only see them out and about from time to time. I own one singular radiant apex mount I drew from crates, and I use it on one character because it fits her lore (she's a former pirate). I would be okay with there being a setting that would remove particle effects and sounds from mounts, tho. A win-win situation if it was a toggleable setting client-side.

yes, it seems to be the norm for modern games. just looks visually appealing when it comes to character customization. I do have and use items that are considered flashy and bright, like the star-born elk mount, and the glow gill guar hide skin, the legionnaire's recall, etc. because it just looks nice.

I do sympathize with other players who say it bothers them visually and do hope there will be an option for them to turn these effects off on their end, which is why I voted yes. personally though, I don't mind the effects. tons of games start off basic and eventually add these sorts of things in it seems

I actually think ZOS has walked a pretty fair line between respecting a realistic, "non-modern" world that also has magic and should be magical-looking.

They can't possibly make everything match everyone's tastes, and there are some things that make me roll my eyes (certain skins or mounts) but the world is so big it's still quite possible to lose yourself in a beautiful landscape without disruption.

The thing that drives me crazy is how we are so restricted on some things (like changing hair color or hip flap design) when people can completely change their skin and blank out their eyes or ride a super flashy mount. It's inconsistent and I wish they would work on giving us more flexibility with the stuff that is still weirdly strict.

I do also sympathize with all of the folks who experience actual medical issues from flashes or crux or things... there was a game I basically wasted $50 on because it made me too sick to play. It is always a bummer.

But overall, for my tastes, play style, and experiences, I think things are OK. Still not cartoon-y. :)

If these things were kept to the open world then most players wouldn't even notice them. But the fact is that these things are very disruptive in crowded cities and we need a toggle to not see others effects in towns.

I was just having a discussion with a friend and during that looked at a few older forum posts again - which reminded me of the discussion here about who the target group is for those over the top flashy sparkly mounts and other store items that rather scream "children's show" than anything more serious.

The old thread was from when Necrom had just been announced and the new companions were introduced. In that reveal stream, ZOS had mentioned their sources of inspiration for the companions, listing movies, comics, anime, memes, pop-culture refences and classic literature.

    Let's say I see a tendency.

I'm an adult and I enjoy them. It's pretty. Most people use things in game that they find pretty. This includes the ones using more grounded designs. Most people do not purposefully make their characters completely ugly to them. Some do, but most don't. It's a fantasy game. Some people who play fantasy games enjoy fantastical things. It's really not that complicated. Personally, I find the argument that it's completely unfathomable another adult could like something I don't to be childish, much more than the mounts.

I guess I'm fine with them using other references at times, I'm just not sure if memes and pop culture are really the best sources. I know such allusions have existed in TES games for years, as "easter eggs" normally. And that's fine - if there's sometimes a small hidden insider joke somewhere. But as one of the main sources of inspiration in general? Also, who knows if the references to random current memes are even understood anymore in a few years (that said, sometimes the result turns out better than I expected; at least I do enjoy travelling with Azandar, no matter how many memes or animes might have been ZOS' inspiration for him).

I personally don't understand the appeal of designs that feel gaudy and kitschy to me, yes. I also don't understand why some people enjoy eating escargot/snails with garlic butter, or why some travel to Tunisia to sit in their hotel and get drunk each and every day and never see anything of the country's culture or landscape before they fly back home. I understand that people are different, but I don't always understand what one person enjoys about one specific thing. And I don't have to either.

I like fantastical things, such Khajiit and Argonians in Tamriel... and casting lightning from my staff to kill enemies... and Dragons and other fantastical beasts in the world.

I don't consider things like horses that explode in noise and light when someone mounts them, or a huge pink bubble appear when someone recalls to be fantastical. I find them cartoonish and disruptive to the feel of the world.

Like I said earlier, I don't mind the flash most of the time, unless a player is obnoxious and mounts/recalls right next to me or in a crowded area like a crafting area.

What I really hate is when a player casts a heal on me in town, putting me into a combat stance. If ZOS allows players to turn off effects from mounts and such, then they should certainly provide a setting that prevents players from doing stuff like casting skills on people in towns (unless they're dueling).

But I doubt they'll provide a setting. After all, players paid for the flash, so I'm not sure it would go down well if ZOS changed something people paid for. Even if they only change it so that other players don't have to hear/see it. Let's face it, some people buy effects in this game to show off, and will be upset if something they paid for is changed. I think ZOS could only change it for anything going forward, so people will know what they're getting for their crowns.

It wouldn't change the flashy mounts and recalls at all if other players were able to toggle off having to see them. The players that use them will still see the flash and hear the noise. The player's motivation to have these things does not mean everyone else should have to accept it to please them. As far as showing off... when I see someone using these mounts and recalls I have a negative feeling.
