I’ve played a lot of games and have never seen anything close to it, but I’ve also not played any other “real” MMOs (besides T&L but that game is still new).

I read a news article about a different game selling a $90 USD mount amidst extremely unpopular balance changes, and quite a few people bought that mount regardless.

In my opinion, though, I think the developers of any MMO — this one included — should be allowed to test the waters with any balance direction they want. I just hope that every playstyle is viable from update to update.

This isn't a balance change though. Nor was the jabs animation. Nor were...quite a few other visual changes, all which fly in the face of THEIR OWN stated mandate to not update visuals after they go live.

I don't disagree that the condition for the Grim Focus glow should be revised, but I am genuinely glad that ZOS will consider revising visuals after they go live. There are many, many visuals in this game which could use an improvement, and I hope ZOS considers those ones as well.

But…but… if this is the mount I’m thinking it is it comes with access anywhere a mount is allowed to an Auction House Trader AND a Mailbox (something that we can do in ESO from anywhere already!). It’s Limited Time Only, which is guaranteed to trigger the FOMO in the best of us, and a similar amount was offered once before, but it’s now unavailable, which makes getting this one up a chance to heal a long-time FOMO regret! 🤣

Even if they ever fix this issue, it will still be too late for me to be happy about it, it's astounding for how long this has been ignored.

No reasoning, barely any communication, just a broken, annoying visual effect they could easily fix.

I'm surprised this thread hasn't already been closed due to all of the repeated feedback that's been given. I suppose it's like the "harder overland" megathread — designed to be the only open thread on the respective topic.

That said, I wouldn't expect anything to change merely because people have given a lot of feedback.

Which is a mindset we have for being often times ignored.

If they do ever close this thread though, I hope people can at least be aware of a small band-aid for the issue, most already know, if you're on PC you can use an add-on called Wizard's Wardrobe, it allows you to bind keys to quickly change all your gear, skills, etc.

What I do is having a setup without Grim Focus for when I'm not actively in combat or just doing minor stuff like questing, so whenever I don't want the effect on me, I use the bound key on my numpad and it quickly switches the annoyance to another skill, and when I want to actually do content I have other keys for my proper combat setups.

It's a nice and easy "solution", but I do hope I won't need to do that anymore one day, especially for the console players who have to manually do this every time.

They'll never 'fix' it. Zos has a written policy that allows them to largely ignore issues like this. This thread is simply a way to manage the nuisance of players unhappy with art decisions made by the development teams.

The written policy should have kept them from making the change in the first place.

I don't even notice it anymore because everyone is running around with bright red, purple, blue, green, orange and yellow body glows these days from the IA sets.

Yes, just like how the upcoming sorc pet skill style is the exact opposite of what players have been asking for. Zenimax does what Zenimax likes and wants.

I just don't understand why we can't have 'Clear/No Glow' for a skill style and slap it in as a freebie style somewhere, and call it done.

They are going on about 'style options', and not letting us have options.
I really feel bad for people who paid crowns for styles from the store, and have them messed up by the glow. :'(

Perhaps they’re still figuring out the best way to monetize removing the perma glow.

If anything, a Grim Focus Skill Style will just change the color (possibly to purple, to match Nightblade's other Skill Styles) because outright making VFX invisible is something completely unprecedented with the Skill Styling system. If you could hide the VFX of any skill with a Skill Style, that would invariably reduce readability in competitive environments.

Arms packs were one of the few things I’d actually purchase with my crowns and I’ve seriously reconsidered because of this change. If my purchased content is not usable because it’s overridden by something else, why should you get my money? And if they can change the visual of a skill at any time (despite their promise not to do so) why would I trust that you won’t do it to one of my non-NB characters and their class skills?

I made my own thread about this a while back with the note that we should have the ability to disable visibility of ANY permanent visual effect emitting from our own characters, not just for ourselves but everyone, including things like the floating spheres from the Ebon Armory set. ZOS' insistence on this is baffling. I can see the arguments being made that it's for PvP purposes, or that it's a prestige thing, but there is no reason the effect couldn't be dependent on a timer or a proc just like every other effect in the game.

It's not cool or special for a lot of people, it's frustrating and irritating to the point that some people just avoid using gear and skills with effects like this. It might sound tinfoil hat, but it's the only reason I can conjure up to justify this implementation: as a balance measure, so fewer players are using it, in order to encourage build diversity. Which is a tremendously bad idea. It seems like a small thing, but if a player is burdened with enough small things, the weight can eventually become too much to bear.

And to be clear, this is not a problem that should be solved with skill styles because that would ignore effects on gear. There needs to be a menu option to turn them off.

That's the reason why this thread continues being active after this long, the devs haven't acknowledged the real state of the skill and it's issues. For a lot of players, Kevin saying it's working as intended is just shoving the problem off and hoping it goes away on it's own. The devs haven't even communicated that they're aware of it's issues.

Want to clear this up as some wires may be crossed here regarding communication. The previous comment posted by me was based off of a conversation with the dev team, not me acting independently to "just shoving the problem off and hoping it goes away on it's own". So the team is aware. That being said, happy to raise this again with the team and see if anything has changed.

It's been some time, I guess the team might have enough to actually acknowledge that it's an issue for the players that needs to be resolved?

And I'm sorry years and even months waiting isn't giving people hopes about game's issues being ever resolved, we've been riding horses idle standing on them since launch etc. it was more-less okay ten years ago but now people actually expect quality products and issues to not take months, years or decades to be solved as there are other games who's teams actually care to take themselves seriously and fix stuff daily and weekly, to communicate about issues and have honest dialogues with community instead of monologues about why their broken system is designed how it is and what's the components of the failure that was never acknowledged as one (sets discussion of recent).

People want actions taken, and want them yesterday or five years ago. Even new updates main feature has game breaking issues that were never tested for apparently (queues that never fill up). There's zero excuse for any of that for the prices asked for anything from the base game, to chapters or dlc content and various 100$ houses and minor adornments for player character. Some still subscribe even, which makes it all x times worse.

Yeah, like how dare costumers think their opinions and feedback should be taken into account when developing the product they're paying for.

When you come back from a hiatus and you have to Google why your weapons won't stop glowing.

That being said this has apparently been a problem for just over a year now, so this seems unlikely to be fixed.

    Unfortunate.
