I think this name change is appropriate given the nomenclature issue people had with the word "Endless" I always believed that the word Endless was something people were hung up on the fact that their runs had to end; by changing it to infinite, it properly reflects the possibilities as opposed to the run.

To be honest, I liked "Endless" better than "Infinite". But agree that the new name was the best option, considering the circumstances.3 -

Probably because it was a gray area. While they referred to it as an "endless dungeon" (lowercase), the official name for this inaugural specimen of the endless dungeon is Endless Archive (capitalized), which does not technically conflict with the Endless Dungeon game released as a part of Sega's Endless franchise.
But it's close enough, esp. since the Endless Archive (formal capitalized name) is an endless dungeon (lowercase classification name), that it was deemed problematic later on.

What is the reason for this name change? As I really doubt a small in-game feature could trigger a copyright/trademark claim outside of the game, as only the players themselves use the EA abbreviation.

I do think that unless it's a legal issue, it seems pretty pointless, considering all the other ways the time and money could have been invested. But if it is a legal issue, then they have to do what they have to do.3 -

They tried with Mojang with their game called Scrolls. It was a half success. They bullied Mojang into being unable to use that name on any future sequels to that game. So they should be able to use the same reasoning here if they're being bullied by some other company. They clearly have the resources to fight it.2 -

Oddly enough, now Mojang and Bethesda are both part of Microsoft.
Anyway, I suspect that they tried to work out a deal for "Endless Archive", lawyers being people who like to do that sort of thing, and that such efforts ended up coming to empty.
