Dark Brotherhood - somewhat disturbing

I'm probably going to be a voice in the wilderness here, but I have to say that I find certain aspects of Dark Brotherhood to be disturbing.

The whole 'run around and knife people in the back' thing in particular. While I've had no issue in the past with sneaking and stealing (which is quite fun) I find the graphics for the DB assassinations to be very confronting. Was it really necessary, in this age of excess and graphic violence online, to add this disturbing level of cutaway?

As I say, I'll probably be in the minority with this opinion, but it is getting to the stage for me that I probably won't continue with the DB guild line because of this. I just wish there was an option to not have these cutaways show.

PS: I knew it was an iffy opinion to post, since so many people enjoy this sort of visceral graphic gaming. Yes, I did indeed play Skyrim for a little while - not for long as my computer at the time couldn't really handle it. I don't recall it being so bloodthirsty but perhaps time has glossed over the memory. I won't stop playing this very enjoyable game because of one small aspect, and as has been suggested, I can avoid it personally. I was literally just voicing an opinion on that small aspect. Its fine if you disagree, but if you could do it without being a poopoohead that would be nice.

i personally love it. i also wish you could do it to people's pets, and every npc that sings that damn red diamonds song. and that whiny chick when you land at the wayshrine at belkarth. and to peoples mounts. that would be awesome.

would also be nice to be able to attack someone from your horse.

hear! hear! good sir, you certainly are a voice for the people...I shoot at those stupid pets all the time - disappointingly though nothing ever happens...

the loud irritating lady in belkarth deserves much more than the simple quick blade of woe - can you say vivisection, dexter style...

sorry OP, you're right, definitely gratuitous violence...I remember in skyrim having to go kill some lady at her wedding - pretty much stopped the storyline after that...that's great that you recognize your boundaries...

the screeching lady in belkarth - a dexter death for her though...

the BoW's cutaways are tame as hell compared to some other games. even skyrims kill animations where brutal. It is part of the game though not mandatory, my friend did all of the DBH quests without using the BoW.

How could your friend do all those quests without using the blade? The first thing you have to do is use it to advance in the questline.

actually its optional, i retested it on an alt and it still works. it may say to use BoW but you can kill them normally the fight is just a pain some times.

DB Hood is not rated pg 13. This is a Rated MA game. People want options, and I for one love this download. It's a damn game guys. Get over it. ~much love

P.S. Although, a kid friendly parental options menu with code authentication would be a great way to keep the people who are "squirmish" happy.

I don't particularly care for gore, because all too often it is a poor substitute for real tension. Cheap horror films slap on the gore to make something extremely unpleasant, because they can't provide the emotional depth to make it actually horrific.

The Blade of Woe isn't that bad, in terms of gore. At least it serves as a reminder that you are killing someone. I think it's reasonable that you should be made aware of the consequences of your actions (done for personal gain in terms of cash, drops and XP). Maybe that's the problem... some people don't want to think that they are committing murder...

I know it's just a game, I know it's just make-believe, but I found that the most worrying aspect of DB was having to kill a random innocent right at the start. Killing an innocent person just to become an assassin. Antisocial behaviour, impaired empathy and remorse, and bold, disinhibited, egotistical traits - that's the definition of a psychopath!

It took me a while to get over that psychological hurdle (I know, sounds silly), but curiously all the people complaining about the gore associate with the Blade of Woe haven't mentioned having any qualms over killing an innocent to get it...

And, that's why you go out and kill bandits, and such to get money and gear. I can see your point. I mean what did those wolf packs ever do to you? They were just sitting there being protective of the dwelling, and ya gotta slaughter them for what? Leather? C'mon! <3

Apologies, but I did not want to create a similar thread with the same sentiments for the DLC, so I just replied to this old thread to give the thought that yes, even after a couple or more years, people are still contemplating if they want to do this DLC's content or not.

    lol

Well, they are assassins so it makes sense they knife people in the back. That's in their job description. I'll admit the animations are rather violent. But we'll have to disagree here. Because I think they're awesome.

The Dark Brotherhood is one of my favorite things about the game. I'd like to see more of it, not less. ^^ And let's be honest here - no one is forcing you to murder people. That's at the player's discretion. This is also an M-rated game.

@Tryxus not really.. the elemental effects are just as bad. Freezing to ice, burning, electricution then disintegrating? What about poison where people die holding thier throats as they violently vomiting up poison?

People are honestly being way to sensitive. It’s apart of the immersion to draw the player into the world. I really can’t even stand the current censorship.

Ever play Mortal Kombat X before? because let me tell you, the fatalities are SO much more brutal than the Dark Brotherhood animations.

Edit: while we’re at it, let’s try to abolish slavery in Coldharbour! That should sit well with the Daedric Prince of domination right?

I love the animations. However, my main is a gentleman who never kills women unless they aggro. Incidentally, he always stops and does the quests women run up to him needing help ask him to do. He likes to help damsels in distress.

On the other hand my female MagDk (Kill Crazy Crush) kills anybody she gets behind, if she happens to be in stealth, and will fight a whole town of guards and get away, before SHE pays a bounty lol. Odd that.

The character still does a murder animation and the sound effects are still there too. The only difference I have seen is its not zoomed into your face. When I am going along trying to pick pocket I see this all the time. Even the blood splatter is still there and sometimes when I am zoomed in close with my pick pocket and someone comes up beside me and murders the npc I'm trying to pick pocket the animation is still very much disturbing to me.

As others have stated, it is much more personal and different playing a character like this. There is a huge difference between going through a dungeon or quest and taking out mobs who would attack you just for getting too close to them than sneaking up behind someone grabbing their head and violently slitting their throat with blood splatter as they fall forward with a deep blood gurgling sound of suffering as they die. This is the big problem with this as to why so many people choose not to do the DB apart from the fact of just simply not wanting a character based on murder. It effects the mind and soul. It puts you in a very dark place with a much different and personal perspective than the way you'd play any other character you have. It is something to think about and I really do think people should look into it before deciding to make a character like that and ask yourself would you really feel comfortable doing that.

    All I would say is:

It would be a bigger problem IMO if the cult of assassins was not disturbing. Trying to make a group of people not seem that way that should is a really bad thing.

Turn off the kill animations, it's in settings.

And last: it's a mature game.

The DB just feels like something that should have been implemented in a way for players to oppose it or choose not to oppose it. Being able to investigate murders and find out who did it which would lead up to discovering the DB and then ways to take them out. I see it as a very disgusting and disturbing thing in the game that I would be more than willing to rally an army and march against, but I can't.

I think many players feel that there is no way to effectively oppose it as a player or none that I have seen yet. There is only the option of joining or not joining. You're going to see a lot of players in every town going around murdering and you can't do anything about it. I have never seen a guard successfully take out a player that got caught murdering. Its a DLC that players paid for and because the DB was offered that way instead of rather a new antagonist presence players could oppose through a story line then it seems counter productive to introduce a way for players to interrupt any kind of player controlled interactions associated with the DB. So because the DB was introduced like that, how could they give players who oppose the DB a way to effectively oppose it more than just going through a story line? I have to often see players murdering in town while I'm doing writs. My character witnessed an injustice and I can't even call guards to come to the area to intervene. It just feels like a helpless situation every time I see it.
