I can’t stand the word “toons” for our characters.

Maybe when they looked like cartoons back in WoW but it honestly irks me in this game.

I say “character” or “avatar” or “avvie”** or “alt” or “dude”.

Like this, “Oh let me change avatars, brb”
Or, “I’m not on my crafting alt, one sec”
Or if in voice chat “I’ll go get another dude for this run.”

It’s more than a pet peeve! It’s almost like when I had a manager that said “irregardless”

Edit: this is silly thread for fun ppl... I apologize for upsetting some of you

Edit 2: ** I have been reliably informed that the kids no longer say “avvie” lol. I shall strike it from my lexicon

I was going to put an “other” option for “this topic is a distraction from real issues!” but I think that’s obvious already.

I usually say Character(s), but have used toon because it is way faster to type.

The one that for some reason grinds my gears is saying "mission" and not "quest". This isn't CoD -

I've personally been on "missions" - these ain't it...

Look.. My dedicated crime alt is a zombie personality, jester crown sporting, many-pronged staff spear from Oblivion toting magblade named Depraved Lunatic.

I will continue to call him my Loony Toon, regardless of anyone's petty sensibilities.

It doesn't affect you at all.

You know what REALLY sounds weird? When people use "toon" in an immersive single-player RPG like Skyrim or Dragon Age. But I can't say I care that much. Not as much as, say, a measly 50% cap on my damage shields.

I've heard various explanations for the word toon - usually people jump to the origin of the word itself which is apparently the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit. (Brilliant movie BTW, if you haven't seen it you definitely should.) Which certainly explains the origin of the word as a contraction of 'cartoon character', but I feel like it's a big jump to go from that to using it to talk about characters in an MMO. Supposedly that comes via various games where your character looked and acted like a cartoon character, and then stuck for some people so they kept using it, but I'm not entirely sure that's accurate.

Honestly I suspect the main reason for it's popularity is it's short, since typing anything more than the bare minimum seems to be unpopular with some MMO players.

Personally I call them characters because that's what they are to me. They're not cartoons, especially not in ESO, they're characters I and other players have created to fulfil a role in a story.

Avatar I believe comes mainly from Ultima Online, where the game itself referred to your characters as avatars, in line with the main Ultima games where the player character was known as The Avatar. And because that game promoted the idea that this was your representation in the game's world - there was relatively little story, mostly just a world to explore and storylines were player driven - so your character was more likely to be like you.

But in ESO and most other games I play my characters are explicitly not like me. They don't look like me and they do all kinds of things I'd never do (like kill people). So it seems inaccurate to call them avatars.

I say character because calling them toons makes me think of a cartoon but if others want to call them toons or whatever that's their choice and it doesn't make a difference to me.

I think you need to build a bridge. there is nothing wrong with toon (or more correctly, 'toon).

Character or alt I can live with but an avatar is a still picture, "avvie" sounds like something a trendy millennial would mash and put on toast, while a dude is an actual person.

The English language evolves over time. Words mean what we want them to mean and is determined by the general population using them in context, not some 100 year old definition of what we claim to be true for all time.

The only time I have problems with words people use is when they don't accurately convey the meaning they are trying to impart.

In the case of "toon" in an mmo, I know exactly what they are referring to so what is the problem?

Language evolves with the people and will continue to long after we're all dust. Here are some modern examples:
My personal favorite is how the French created a new word for what we typically call a "computer".

Not sure why that one bugs me.

I suspect that's habit as much as anything. My husband got Red Dead Redemption 2, which calls them missions, and I know that but because I'm usually playing ESO or another fantasy RPG at the same time I keep falling back into calling them quests, even though it seems as out of place as calling ESO quests a mission.

Kind of like when I go between the ESO and Guild Wars 2 forums and have to mentally shift from talking about crowns, collections and classes to gems, wardrobe and professions and back. More than once I've had to correct a post when I caught myself using the wrong terminology.
