There are times where I actually start to say toon or toons, but then realize I hate the term and quickly turn that toon around into character. I might get the T out before I realize wth I'm doing, but hey...character for the win.
To be completely fair, saying toon is much easier than saying character...one syllable vs three after all. Not that it's truly more difficult, I'm just all about conservation of energy, but only personal energy...like all my light are on, furnace is blasting, TV & ESO cranked into the full ON position...

...I also really love ellipses...but whatever.

This may have already been posted, but I'm not reading through 4 pages to find out.

The term 'Toon' doesn't stand for cartoon. It was originated in in M.U.D.s', which stands for multi user dungeons. These were text based online games.
The term carried over into Ultima Online and EQ when they launched. 'Toon' is not a derogatory term.

I agree that use of the term "toon" has been expanded to mean more than a cartoon, however, this term was also used in the 1930's as a shortening of the word cartoon to refer to such.

I think that predates the use of M.U.D.s :p

Prior to that, the word "toon" in 1810 was used as a name for a southeast Asian and Australian tree (Toona ciliata synonym Cedrela toona) of the mahogany family with aromatic dark red to reddish-brown wood.

As to where its origins were? Long before video games were made.

I'm not gonna get in a semantic argument over when the term was first introduced.
To the best of my knowledge what I posted is accurate as applied to gaming terms, and that's what the OP made the poll about; Gaming.

    Thank you for the clarification.
On a side note, I agree with you on the use of it in gaming. I was just clarifying "why" some may dislike the use of the word as they familiarize the word more with a cartoon as opposed to a character.

All these video games are cartoons. The characters or avatars are always animated illustrations.

When we start controlling human bodies like that Bruce Willis movie that’s name escapes me, then it would be even funnier to call them “toons”

Edit: I usually say “character” when there is some conscious or subconscious emotional coloring of the mental construct. I say “toon” when speaking about it in a way that is depersonalized. It’s all subconscious. And none of the terms people use bother me

were it possible that I could put the words together in such a way - ditto on what qbit said...

I say toons often out of habit. Sometimes i use main and alt. But toon is far easier to type than character. You get use to it. Its like DD and DPS. ive never heard of DD until i played this game in 19 years of playing MMOs. It is still the only game i hear it.

Toons, short for cartoons, are imaginary, animated characters. There is also a large diversity of cartoon styles, so you cant say it should be just one look. Concept meshes perfectly well for games to me.

I never much liked "toons" when I first encountered it, but because it's so widespread it's found its way into my vocabulary too, honestly. Still don't much like it, but it is easier to type than "characters" when you're in a hurry or whatever.

The real issue, which has just now come to my attention, is that there are people who say "avvie"...

I'm not sure why I have such strong feelings about this, but I think the only rational solution is: If I see you type "my avvie" in game, I'm immediately dropping group, adding you to the Ignore list, and steering clear of wherever I met you for at least 24 hours. Then I might go take a shower.
