Calling them "toons" drives me nuts. Characters are not "toons."

Though I suppose it serves as a good litmus test for who does and doesn't actually care about developing characters and engaging in storytelling...

I hear ya, I say toons now because so many others are using it.

I prefer 'character', but I've heard 'toon' so many times that it's infected my vocabulary. It doesn't help that it's faster to say.

They are toons. This is a cartoon world with cartoon characters. It isn't real, it's all animated, that is what a cartoon is.

People can call them whatever they want and that is just fine, however, they are properly and correctly identified as 'characters' and literally are not 'toons'. That's why the game consists of NPC's rather than NPT's.

Others also referred to them as 'avatars' but technically speaking our ESO characters are not avatars.

I had a boss that says "irregardless." I pointed out that it wasnt a word, and he said "irregardless, I'm using it."

I dont use "toons" either, but the poll option is funny.

I've used the term "toons" from as far back as DAoC, even though I know it doesn't really fit any longer.

I say “oh my god” mostly and “gosh” when I’m being facetious/cheeky

I tend to use "Oh my Gucciness" when the situation calls for a facetious response.

I'm kind of surprised that since we have "npc's" in the game, why not refer to our characters as "PC's" it's shorter than "toons", and does make more sense

"char" (pronounced "kar") or "character", just like in a tabletop RPG. In MUDs and Second Life they were often "avatar", but that's less appropriate for a bucket-of-stats like an ESO character.

I agree with you on the history, but these days my impression is that "avatar" is purely a forum term, while "character" is principally derived from PC RPGs and "toon" is more of a console term or used in relation to PC cartoon-style games such as that other MMORPG we don't mention.

"Vomit". And yeah, that's kind of the point: it started out as "think of a sensible name!" when I started playing Oblivion and was creating my first character. I spent ages poring over the series' lore but nothing appealed to me. After what seemed like an age I finally gave up and decided maybe I would be better off choosing something stupid instead.

Predictably, people soon started calling me that too (well, predictable to anyone who isn't me). More interesting than "Christine", I suppose.

The real issue, which has just now come to my attention, is that there are people who say "avvie"...

I'm not sure why I have such strong feelings about this, but I think the only rational solution is: If I see you type "my avvie" in game, I'm immediately dropping group, adding you to the Ignore list, and steering clear of wherever I met you for at least 24 hours. Then I might go take a shower.

For what it's worth, my response was in a similar "in-good-fun" sort of spirit I took this thread to be made in. I don't have that strong of feelings about it, haha.

Avvie is a bit... creepy(?) for lack of better word, though. :P

I admit I havent heard it since all the female players I used to know in Second Life. And I remember that we all tried WoW together in its second or third year and we weren’t allowed to choose the Horde because according to them “the avvies are too ugly” lol, those were the days.
