But.... it’s not a mana pool in this game.

"char" (pronounced "kar") or "character", just like in a tabletop RPG. In MUDs and Second Life they were often "avatar", but that's less appropriate for a bucket-of-stats like an ESO character.

Every time I see "char" here, I think, "They're called Khajiits in this game. Besides, you forgot an 'r.'" I spent way too much time in GW2 :D

I ain't playing IMVU, Second Life or some other chat-service-thing, I'm on the ol' Elder Scrolls Online and I ain't going to say avatar especially when the character clearly isn't me. lmao

Toon is quicker and easier. ;)

Welcome, Moon-and-Star, to this place where destiny is made.

I play healers or DPS often for vet dungeons and trials (NA, CP810+). I play mostly elves or Argonians.
I primarily play Damage-Based stuff in PvP, but occasionally I'll play something tanky or got the heals.
I also love gaining more knowledge both metaphysical and mundane regarding TES lore.

I also occasionally role-play, but I prefer playing the game.

They are toons. This is a cartoon world with cartoon characters. It isn't real, it's all animated, that is what a cartoon is.
People can call them whatever they want and that is just fine, however, they are properly and correctly identified as 'characters' and literally are not 'toons'. That's why the game consists of NPC's rather than NPT's.

Others also referred to them as 'avatars' but technically speaking our ESO characters are not avatars.

There is no proper or correct. They are whatever we see them as. I see them as toons therefore they are toons.

Silly as it is, I had to think about this one!

I say toons, all the time. Probably because I've been playing MMOs since WoW. Haven't thought about it much, doesn't bother me either way. What is funny though, is I use it almost exclusively in a negative way.

For example, "I can't craft that on this toon." "This toon doesn't have good gear."

But if I am talking about them in a more positive way, I usually say things like "I'll jump on my main" or "I will switch to my stamsorc."

I will say alt a lot as well. I don't think I've ever said this character or avatar. To me character is a separate entity, like I am reading a book and there is a new character introduced. When I'm playing, for me it's more like who I choose to play with is an extension of me, playing the game, and so I think that's why I refer to them by their roles. They are all different parts of me.

With the history lessons from further back in the thread I wonder if that somehow influenced your negative connotations with the word “toon”

I just say it sometimes for no reason, I've always wondered what it really meant and "Maybe when they looked like cartoons back in WoW but it honestly irks me in this game."

Toon standing for cartoon just doesn't make much sense to me either. Just seemed to catch on somehow. Alt's is a good option, but that implies they're lesser than your main, there is some people that probably have more then 1 character that they consider their main depending on the content.

I find not many people know OOM (out of mana/ out of magicka) in this game. Which is weird considering we don’t have infinite sustain anymore.

I repeat - I've used the word "toon" for so long now I'm not changing it. I started using it back in the days when I DMd P&P DND - mid 70s. Nothing to do with WoW for me, I was using it for.... um.... 30 years before I started playing WoW....

Though because some of you seem so tender about it, I've started just using "girls" instead. It's a true statement. I don't EVER play males. I've never once in my entire (quite long.... be 71 shortly) life ever had any interest in what it would be like to be male, or thought about what it might be like in a game to roleplay a male.
