My decision stands on not purchasing the crown crates, no matter what the article says, they will not suddenly become monumentally interesting to me.
I know that some people are going to buy a bunch and put out videos. It will be interesting to see them from a variety of people.
And I wonder what will be happening in the forums tomorrow after people read the article. And again after release.
The article? The one that's going to be hashed out by some PR person and then copy pasted to the forums? It will be filled with promises of what they won't do with the crates and what they will do with the crates. Try to make it sounding as positive as they can but in 4-6 months from now everything that will be posted tomorrow will be thrown out the window.
Well I have some crowns saved for the crates to try them out doesnt mean all my pay will go into them
Well I have some crowns saved for the crates to try them out doesnt mean all my pay will go into them
And I hope you get something nice. I'll save my crowns to buy things that I know I'm getting, like future DLCs, or cosmetics I'm really after. Not going to waste crowns on something that isn't a sure thing.

There's one thing to look forward to... when the complain threads about buying 10+ scamcrates without getting the mount people want start, we can say "told you so". And I will take great pleasure in doing so.
Will those dumb forum signatures go away by that point too? The ones that sound like a 2 year old learning to talk?
I've been a paying subscriber of this game since Beta. I've never played any other Elder Scrolls game. This was my first. I am extremely bored with this game, but I still log in and waste hours in it. Sometimes I am able to find fun people to play with and I am able to enjoy my time in the game. Other times I log in and I'm surrounded by guildies who are not paying attention to chat or are just too lazy to respond to anyone logging in and saying hi or wanting to do something.
I will play this game until I fully get bored with it. ZOS adding crown crates isn't going to change my game experience at all. I will still either have fun or be bored or angry. Buying crowns and spending them on crown crates isn't going to change my game experience either. Tonight I purchased four 5500 crown packs while they were on sale. I now have a total of 52,950 crowns to spend. I did this NOT knowing that crown crates would be released this week. I just wanted to buy the crowns at a discounted price so I could have a bulk amount and use them for whatever in the future. Maybe upgrade horses on new toons, maybe do a few race changes, whatever. Will I buy crown crates? Probably. I will make that decision when I see the official announcement if I like what they have to say. Will my purchase change the game for the better or worse? Nope! Not one bit. If I choose to spend my money on crown crates, so be it. I gamble in real life in the casino on a weekly basis. More than often you lose when doing so, but it is fun for me. I have the money and I can afford to do so. Gambling at a casino isn't for everyone. Gambling in a video game isn't for everyone. You can hate it all you want, but there will still be a ton of people out there who will love it, and that's who ZOS is counting on. They are a company with a goal of one thing; Making money. The game will remain the same. People will still play it until they don't want to anymore.
That's all I have to say about that.

How about big with gradient font colors?
Although not a direct comparison, COD, Overwatch, destiny, etc etc (some some of the games on my shelf) all have gamble boxes. In each case they are not essential to gameplay. You do not need them to succeed in the game. You buy them if you want a new skin or gun dye etc. Gamble boxes have been an ‘addition’ to these games which is entirely optional.

Not sure about the other games, but they're optional in COD because you can actually earn the skins in-game. Buying the boxes just gives you a chance at earning them faster.
What ZOS are planning to do is just plain unfair, and a mockery to their loyal customers. They want a quick buck? Fine, then just add the items as single purchases rather than in ridiculous RNG crates. Some of the stuff in there looks great, and I'm sure plenty of people would buy them were they added to the crown store as individual items. I probably would, but I, and many others have no intentions on supporting this gambling bollocks.
It looks like this thread has turned into another ‘right or wrong’ / im leaving / ZOS has ruined the game / The game is dead / even singling out indivduals at ZOS for blame.
Seriously guys, at the risk of being flamed, the very point a lot have made about ‘every MMO’s goes this route’, is also the same reason every MMO has bags of content every year.

My 11yr old likes to spend £5 or so of his birthday or pocket money on them. He hasn’t become a gambling addict and hes in the demographic of highly influenced. He understands he doesn’t need the items but wants the chance to try a lucky dip for a new item or in game graphic.
Does my 11yrd old rant and rave on about how its unfair gamble boxes exist? No. He just gets on with enjoying the game. I think some of the supposed adults should take a lesson from the ‘kids’ about acting rationally.

In simple terms for you:
Your 11 year old wants to spend his pocket money on a Mars bar. He goes to the same shop that's always sold him a Mars bar when he asks for one, except today the shop tells him that in exchange for his money they'll give him a random chocolate bar with an incredibly slim chance of being the Mars bar he's hoping for. It may even be a chocolate bar he specifically does not like. He does not have the (sensible) option of requesting they just sell him the damn Mars bar so everyone is happy. They suggest that to ensure he gets the Mars bar he wants, he should spend his money multiple times over to increase his chances of getting the Mars bar.

Or in other terms: Your 11 year old wants a Kinder Surprise egg (Americans, google it. It's more dangerous than guns, obviously). He probably doesnt' care at all for the chocolate around, and he'll probably get something in the egg he didn't want in the first place, or had no idea it even existed. Or he gets lucky and gets the one figure from this new series of collectibles he wanted. Maybe he simply has fun opening them. I sure as hell always had.

Except Kinder Eggs have always been sold that way - they didn't randomly switch to that model. And most importantly, being primarily a chocolate item and not primarily a toy (hence being sold in confectionary stores and not toy shops), the chocolate is always guaranteed.
This isn't ZOS trialling a fun new way to buy the items you want. It's ZOS saying "Hey, gambling boxes hook in some huge whale revenue! We should chase that revenue stream, even if it means our player base get a much worse deal. Screw the majority, we only care about the minority who are crazy enough to spend absurd amounts of money of these things."
There is literally no way you can defend this practice from a consumer stand point.

Yeah, I get that and as you say, all those MMO’s ive quoted you can obtain the same items by saving up credits etc
Are we 100% sure that ZOS aren’t doing the same thing? From what ive read its mostly consumables (which you can buy with crowns or make yourself, with the rare chance of getting a mount etc. Even if you then don’t want the crate items they give you the chance to cash them in for gems which you can buy the items you want (albeit at a very poor exchange rate)
It seems to me with a slight adjustment, corwn crates can function alongside the main game like every other MMO and until the news items gets published no-one has any concrete evidence either way.
