I'd go with nightblade, because there are at least 20 threads a day calling for them to be nerfed in some manner. That's why I picked it.

    I vote stam NB.

They are front-runners in DPS in PvP and PvE, and they have utility with their cloak, which is useful for getting out of sticky situations. It'll also help with the content of 2 DLCs: the dark brotherhood and thieves guild.

People have claimed that it's easy to use. It will require a bit of work to get the foundational self-heals though. Vigor requires spending a bit of time in PvP, and rally (from 2H) doesn't unlock until the skill line is quite underway.

Templar is very forgiving at lower levels, and requires little skill through the higher levels.

    My second choice: Magicka Templar.

They are the current best-all-around magicka class in the game, since they have access to a class spammable and class heal. They're not pigeon-holed into running destro/resto, like most magicka builds, to be effective.

You'll have a heal available to you very early in the game, and puncturing sweeps makes magicka templar the ultimate solo PvEr. You're basically able to focus on damage output without ever having to stop to shield up or heal because puncturing sweeps recovers health with every hit.

Templars are also quite versatile with roles: you can be an effective DPS, best healer, and effective tank.

Mag Templar, can be strongest healer in the game with some dps or good dps with some healing, always adds value to a group in any situation etc. Solo well either way.

it depends on whether what they want to do

if just Pvp advise them to go stamina they will have a much easier time doesnt matter which class, just stam.

if they want to DLC sneaky sneaky questy type stuff (DB & TG) NB is def the easiest class for brand new characters

if they want to power level (grind) so they can start running dungeons/trials, templar is the easiest to grind and whether they go Mag or Stam it doesnt matter every dungeon group loves repentance!

Nah. Magicka nightblades are miles ahead. Being ranged and getting heals from using your main spammable offensive skill? Oh, and you can cloak a lot more as a magblade. They're not as bursty or hard-hitting as a stamblade, but they have far better survivability and versatility.

People say nightblade, but thats only easy if you know what to do. If you want EASY, then a magicka templar. Half your abilities do hard damage, the other half heal yourself heavily.

I've been a templar for 2 years. Any class can do well vs the computer. The game scales off of your level.

If you ever plan to play vs other players you will want a class that can kill their opponenets and nightblades do it the best.

Templars are only looking strong because they have a ranged execute that cannot be dodged. They rely on other players to deal out the damage. Templars struggle to kill their opponents when they are above 50%health. If you see a templar by himself it's a free kill.

Most players good Nightblade cause most players have a kill fast, hit and run mind set from former Games in the series Stamina Sorc is your best bet. Stamina HoTs, Class burst and a 15s Melee AoE that follows you highest mobility cloak is great but you're in the same place Bolt Escape your are actually gone.

My suggestion. Let your friend choose what he or she likes. Any combination is viable and can complete all content. If he or she is a min maxer. Then choose whichever race that synergizes with whichever resource attribute some classes favor. I'll go with the former though. Because why play if your not playing the way you want

Magicka NB are extremely squishy and eventually, your health funnel wont heal enough to save you. So I'm really not sure why people are recommending magNB to a beginner.

Plus in pve you have a lot to look out for to keep max DPS unlike mag templars that can spam biting jabs or dark flare and be ok and just healing breath themselves if the *** hits the fan.

    Huh?!

They have the same mitigation and resistances as any other caster.

Except they are ranged, which exposes them to less damage (advantage vs. Templars and DKs).

And their main spammable abilities (Funnel, Sap) heal without you having to think about it or applying a pre-buff (advantage vs. Sorcs and DKs).

Magblades have the best survivability of any caster. Any "squishy" magblade is someone who isn't playing correctly and will likely be even squishier on another caster.

I say just pick one and run with it. I started in May and asked the same thing. At that time all said stamina sucked(but I like melee lol) go magicka. Be a templar. Maybe a magicka nb. Stamina Templars were useless and stamina sorcerers were worse. After trying a few classes I settled on stamina sorcerer and I'm loving it. I haven't broken into trials yet, PvP, or other high end elite stuff yet so it might actually suck as a lot of people said, but I'm doing all quests as I go(cp 120 so far) and learning. With dw, tornado, purge I haven't had any survival issues(yet. I've only done main quest, fighter/mage guilds, and working through wrothgar until one tam hits before doing silver)

Main point? Have your friend try them until they find one that fits. Esp if it's their "learning" character.

    - the nb magicka - the dk magicka- stamina . so ... you have the choice OR you can take a bad class that will be always nerf .

magicka nightblade or magicka templar; youll have access to a combined damage/selfheal skill from the moment char is made and elemental blockade is only a few hits with a destro staff away, then youll have a dot that can be used as aeo skill and as single target dot, the selfheal from strife and puncuting sweeps will pull you through almost anything

On both magblade and magplar you can solo content inzones far far above your own level and esp the magplar can be used for being dd and healer without changing gear or skills after weapon swap is available

To be honest, I don't feel there is "THE" best class to start with, it really depends on what your friend like. But if your friend wants the most survivability, then magicka NB and magicka sorcerer are the ways to go with magicka NB having a slightly easier time to startup because Funnel Health and Impale are the first skills from Siphoning and Assassination trees respectively while Power Surge and Hardened Ward come late.

Puncturing Sweeps is a magplar's main spammable. It's melee range.

There is, however, dark flare, which I think is seriously underused. It hits hard...

@code65536 I'm going to agree with you that magicka NB does have its bells and whistles. I've played all the magicka types, and NB is by far my favorite. They have a lot of great skills to choose from, and they can cloak longer.

The reason I went with stam NB though is b/c it has a place in PvP, while mNB really does not right now (nor in Update 12). As a tradeoff though, mNBs are really good in vMSA (not the easist, that would be Sorc). But what would a new player more likely do? vMSA or PvP?

Finally, I agree with @Oh_Skrivva. A new player should start with whatever they want.
