As long as it goes both ways im fine with this. Ive had too many people "appearing offline" while sending hate tells. Or ignoring me and sending hate tells etc.
So if you ignore someone, you cant PM them.
If you appear offline, you also cannot communicate with anyone not in your friends list.
If you set your @name to be unviewable, you also cannot see others @names.
In this day and age, im sure coding these into the system cant be all that difficult.
There is no meta-gaming when you are offline and come onto a new character though. What will be meta-gaming now though are those that are getting into the roleplaying scene, don't understand not to blurt something out and see the new nameplate feature and say something. That really kills the entire experience.

For people that might not be interested in a full-featured UI addon like Azurah, I have uploaded a tiny standalone addon called RP Target Frame which will simply remove the @accountname from the target frame with no configuration required whatsoever (besides making sure it is checked in your addon list).
Hope it helps!

.
RP Target Frame just got an update!
I added a simple configuration menu to Addon Settings, and the option to hide the @accountname from the player interaction frame as well (the one when you are close and it says "Press to interact" where you get the wheel to trade, whisper, etc.).
You can toggle hiding the @accountname from either independently.
If anyone finds any more places to hide it let me know.

At that, name plates of some sort if fairly common in MMOs. I understand some may prefer their name not be visible at all, but nameplates are a fairly common part of most MMOs. While I have often chosen to have nameplates turned off in other games, I think it is a great idea to have them as a choice.
