With that said, I don't see how text chat would work on consoles. Entering text on Xbox is clunky as all hell, and I realize that that's the best they can do. It takes easily five times longer (possibly even more, I haven't actually timed myself) to enter a screen name or password on Xbox compared to PC. Text chat conversations need to be quick and easy, and that's just not very doable on a console. Also, because you can't easily resize and relocate UI elements like you could on a PC, you're running the risk of the chat box being either too big and obtrusive, or so small that you can't read the text, neither of which will make it useful.
Now, let me make it clear, I'm NOT against text chat. I just don't find the concept of it to be practical on a console.
It may not be practical for you, but there are many people out there such as myself that have keyboards to utilize, they even have special keyboards that plug right into the controller.
See, that doesn't make any sense to me. If I'm going to buy a keyboard, I may as well just play on PC because my PC already has a keyboard.
Well said!
THIS is one part of the issue.
Well commented...another is managing a controller keyboard interaction where two hands are required on one or the other to be most effective...I guess you can half-a$$ it but who wants that experience when it works best on PC.
Also, no one is or has addressed how to scroll, right click, link, etc without a mouse.
I mean, sure they could change the controller key bindings but then you're giving up functionality and you now how to stop to communicate which is the larger issue.
Neverwinter is a good example of this kinda working but the sacrifices made for it to kinda work are overwhelming reasons not to go down that path. May as well be a keyboard and mouse game....which then, it may as well be a PC game.
When you get to a point where you need another controller or device plugged in such as a mouse or keyboard you've crossed over into a "Why the heck is this on console" situation.
Too funny. Well said how? How about the people that only have consoles and not a PC?
And this is not a new concept, gentlemen. People have been using controller and keyboard for DCUO and FFXIV for years now. You scroll with the controller, type when you need to. You guys are making a huge deal out if nothing.
So of I'm on PC and prefer a controller vs a keyboard/mouse, I should just play the console? Because according to you, if I'm on a console and need a keyboard for communication, I should just be playing a PC?!?! Some of you make no sense or don't think before you type.
Scroll back a few pages. I literally addressed this.
You can play using Xpadder or Pinnacle Profile with no issues as have I since 2013 until June console then I moved over.
I'm sure you're aware control pad support is coming to PC soon but the controller on PC is completely a different situation compared to console.
If you're on console you wouldn't use a keyboard because it's not supported. Let's be realistic of what actually exists or what support is coming which is confirmed.
Making sense....it's all your opinion but based on your comments your comments are hard to take seriously when considering options, preferences and what's already supported.
If you're on PC, nothing in this thread pertains to you as there exists third party support for most means of controller and communication support.
Don't be that guy please
As far as cyber bullying...one or the other provide an opportunity to cyber bully (which is not different than bullying or being rude...remove cyber out, it's being a jerk or immature behaviors towards another)
Now text abuse vs voice abuse.
-if via text, it's up for all to see over a very large zone or area
-if it's voice it's limited to 25 yards or guild and party/group chat.
The bullying or bad behavior has greater damage via text especially with screen shot and tweet, video recording and editing or reproduction capabilities. Voice can't be recorded in most cases without extra hardware and software on consoles.
Movie is more positive for this and most ideal.
My actual point was, Yes you would get it in both, but by far voice would be more damaging on the person...In regards to how text chat is less valuable vs voice chat "on console"
-requires another peripheral to be effective
-time consuming to enter and read responses
-requires additional buttons of the controller reducing gameplay effectiveness
-pauses gameplay or takes a players hands off the control pad (unless typing with the controller which takes a lot longer)
-is impersonal
-allows other to quickly repeat text that another user may not want to see
-consoles are somewhat limited in a way to block text only communications only by user without blocking the same user all together
-requires portion of the screen which blocks or hides gameplay
And voice is none of that no? Even when you have to leave the game to look at invites and messages from people?
Youve literally just said the issues with voice too....As far as voice being harder to setup...well that may be but for consoles, it's a requirement for online games so either you do it or your game doesn't get approved.
Yes other online games that arnt your average MMORPG...Regarding people not being your definition of social and text chat somehow making everyone more social.
-some people do not want to talk or interact with others, they just want to play solo.
-text chat is yet another form of communication. If I'm on console and choose not to talk using my voice, the idea of needing to type instead and read while playing isn't a guaranteed motivation. Text chat can offer a mute or deaf gamer an opportunity to communicate but that's all it does, it offers a chance. Someone like me, if this were added will, if possible, always keep it closed so it doesn't offer them any chance to communicate with everyone.
No, a lot of people would like to chat but not via voice.. Offers a chance?! I bet more people than you think will use it.We each will define when, where and how we want to communicate with other gamers.
Those choices begin with picking a platform.
Next is choosing a game
Lastly is by headset or mic, Kinect, ps eye or not at all.
Yes, Most of us bought on console as well because we assumed it would be the same experience... I'm not going to watch every dev vid or read every update article about whats in and not.
Text is a fundamental part of any MMORPG and we all just assumed wrong they would realize that too..You and some others in this topic has taken the position that a lot of others feel the way you do.
I think in the best participated poll, we saw the PC to console folks expressing interest in having the text chat added but even in that thread there was a lot of votes just cause they could vote.
Bring on a poll on the actual console, I bet you will see it in a new light then..Do you run into people while playing that you don't know that suggest they wish they could talk to you and others via text vs voice. I doubt it but do you?
Yes, yes i do.In those cases is it regarding communication or is it just a desire to broadcast announcement like info over large areas?
I do not just want to start talking to random people with voice, Its like a personal/privacy thing.
Do you go around in the real world and randomly talk to someone full blown convo? no..
Dating sites : you wouldn't randomly phone someone and start talking to them straight away... no. you message 1st get to know until you feel comfortable..I think as a PC gamer and a console gamer I have plenty of choice and opportunity.
I own both versions...I choose to play where the opportunity best fits my desires.
Again basically your telling us if we don't like it go back to PC.I'm happy as many others are as well regarding communication.
Find your happiness in a way that doesn't impact others regardless of if you see it as negative or neutral.
Again how is this going to IMPACT you? Your precious voice has an impact on alot of the console community but you don't give a monkeys about them.
My happiness would me when they implement text chat
I would just like to add to what someone said before..
Compare this too a mobile phone...
Say you get phone, then the new model comes out with new features you want/need. But you can only use voice calls....
No texting... What would you do?
Because you know what, I guarantee everyone uses texts on a phone ALOT more than they would call... Just ask your girlfriend/Wife...
I know the phone has no relevance on the game but it is a similar prospect.

It seems like this is more of a player convenience problem than anything else.¯ \_(ツ)_/¯
Exactly a player convenience problem... If there has to be 3rd party approaches to doing things in game then clearly there is a problem.. Why can no one see this? lol

I'm on board with this approach. Not that I agree with adding text chat but at least this is a way more accurate portrayal of what this thread should be about.
I imagine this thread or topic could have gained more traction if it hadn't been hijacked by hyberbolic posters claiming that lack of text chat is game breaking, will kill the game, insulting those who disagree, etc. It's a hundred page tbread that could be condensed into about 10 but trolling and baiting and bumping took over and now nobody even find any real conversation about a player convenience concern. Oh well.
When all else fails, we can whip the horse's eyes.

If you want to get this added, come up with the solutions in a constructive way.
Right now this is just a complaint thread to ZOS or a why won't you respond thread full of ppl bumping the thread with no value added
It really isn't. MMO's were always part of chat. It's the same circle...phone example, DUCO or Neverwinter Or Final Fantasy, then the it's on PC why not console or hey I have a keyboard...other things like make it so it can be optional, or why are you forcing this on me.
Perhaps if something that Zenimax views as an value add and presented in a way that offers solves for each obstacle they ran up against it could be responded to by the staff but as of now and the last three months, it's the same ok, same ok and those observations have been addressed on ESO live.
If you're on console you wouldn't use a keyboard because it's not supported. Let's be realistic of what actually exists or what support is coming which is confirmed.

If I can do that, and I am an idiot, I think a-whole-lotta people can handle things like chatbox typing, chatbox re-sizing/formatting/disabling, console key re-mapping, and so many other things that ZOS apparnetly doesn't think the "console crowd" would use, or enjoy.

Exactly it's quite sad that the Anti Text Chatters are nothing but trolls. I'm willing to bet that a lot of them don't want it just because they're afraid of people undercutting Profits and giving away Bites for free.

I really dont know what their issue is. I would be interested to hear from them how a disabled/minimized text chat box would affect their game in a bad way?
I mean, Im not a big fan of voice chat mainly because its so limited as to be completely useless to me, and Id rather not listen to all the nonsense broadcast over it, so I would just shut it off when I entered the game, and any other time it would turn itself back on. HOWEVER, once shut off, I will say it really didnt affect my game at all. Good, bad or whatever.. Now why is it, that text chat shut off for those who dont want it would be different?

Solutions in a constructive way? We already gave it to them thousands of times, they aren't listening. Clearly neither are you.It really isn't. No they haven't. Zenimax obviously has not thought this though, they're just giving us badly presented excuses when these issues can clearly be resolved easily and have been done by countless Developers before. If you're on console you wouldn't use a keyboard because it's not supported. LOL what? Completely ignoring that people already have been using KB for MMO's on Consoles for a very long time since the PS2 era. Dodging more facts are we?

You're missing it.
Here is an example of a constructive way to suggest a change in this game.
@......ZOS
I'd like you to review the possibilities of XYZ change or suggestion
(Proposal goes here...)
-ZOS your console development shared the following reasons why XYZ wasn't implemented and scrapped during development
-Insert reason 1
-insert reason 2
-insert reason 3
ZOS, here are my suggestions regarding each reason
-solution to reason 1
-solution to reason 2
-solution to reason 3
ZOS, as an alternative if your decision is still no
-XYZ comment about how ZOS would suggest using XYZ features that already exist to address the OP concerns that will not be resolved by the suggested or proposed changes
...
Wait for ZOS response

It's the developers job to Find Solutions, many developers already solved the same Text Chat issue they were having on Consoles. So yes Zenimax clearly is either incompetent, or they just don't want to.
