You see, I don't think this is even an anti chat argument, many of us just want it to come in on an app.
The biggest strength of in game text chat is being able to communicate with more people who actually in the game playing. It's often said that having both text chat and voice would divide the community. How would a 3rd party app not do the same?
Everyone would have access to text and voice chat vs everyone having access to voice but only some having access to the 3rd party app. The app doesn't address what text chat would, just pulls players out of the game. The now rather than still interacting with the controller as with in game text chat, they would have to engage another completely separate device. It's apples to oranges.
Also content development was slow because of lacking revenue that is why ZOS went F2P and waited until console release to start releasing major content updates. They wanted to get a better idea of their total projected revenue with all systems accounted. As well as wanting the profits from console sales to fall back on.5 -

I actually don't think there's anyone in this thread against text chat.
I think its implementation is the source of contention.
I would love to see an app fill the text need and include some useful functions. Maybe some from various addons.
I personally don't want to use a keyboard or a mini keyboard or have to toggle a text box off each and every time I log in a LA voice chat style.
Many people aren't considering that text chat would be added from their imagination into the game without any hiccuos because glitches and bugs never happen in even the most desired of features.

He's "not against text chat"...even though he is against text chat.
He begs not to have to use a controller in one hand and a texting device in the other...even though he is fine if that texting device just happens to be a cellphone.

Ahhh I know, must be the mind numbing, ear blasting, obnoxious area chat that they have that's supposed to bring countless people together in a "immersive mmorpg" while children cry in the background, fights break out at home "for your entertainment" since it can be heard thanks to there mic that they don't mute. Didnt you guys know? We paid for that feature when we bought the game! Its called the "$%#@ Us Right?" Feature where we not only get the elder scrolls story built in but everyone's life story in the background! But dont worry, if you dont like it, just disable chat... or all communication from the eso "MMO" world...

oh ok lol. but yea i agree with what you said before. voice chat is just horrible when no one knows how to use it properly, with the screaming babies and the IRL arguments. i use to disable voice chat everytime i zoned. now its so much of a hassle i learned to ignore all the annoying people scream over voice chat. but i definitely dont stay in cities for long while in game. lol3 -

Because of this I'll be trading in my copy of the game today while I can still get something for it.
If they ever decide to correct some of these mistakes then I might come back.

You drink the blue kool aid - the desire for text chat ends, you embrace the obnoxious area chat and lie to yourself that its fine, staying in the lonely "MMO" world... alone . Just imagine something called... I don't know, lets just call it area chat, that will be implemented EVERYWHERE for EVERYONE ... This way you can play the game AND eat your dinner or your favorite snack, yell at your kids, watch a movie or simply talk to your friends standing next to you while trying to fight in a dungeon, or simply try to trade while over 20+ people in the same area chat as you try and get a group together! This is so much better than text chat, they will throw money at us for coming up with such a great idea! Shut up Meg I don't care about your so called realistic concerns, this is the future of mmo's... we are just the only ones to do it... that just means that we are being innovative right? Its not like that many mmo's have been out that we might wonder why they never tried to do JUST area chat..."

I'll debate with the anti TEXT CHAT players for 20 pages before I were to give up on this topic. I have such high hopes for what this game will evolve into. First things first though, fix the communication. This is an MMO console or not. I've already stated that an MMO without the ability to communicate with the "Massive" amounts of players is just a side by side single player game. I can't help anyone that I see having an issue with a puzzle.
Example: One of the very first areas for Dominion has a puzzle where you must correctly order the moon phases. Well I see a player shocking himself over and over attempting to unlock the door. Of course I would like to help. Well my 18 month old is napping next to me. I didn't want to bust out my headset and chance waking up the grump. Assuming that they aren't deaf and speak english. Well no text chat. So I'm attempting to jump and point to get their attention. Eventually I get them to activate the first one, then I ran to the second one but the player had already attemped another out of order and restarted the process. After 10 minutes of attempting to help this person, I gave up. Something that should have been as easy as "activate the moon stones 1, 3, 4, then 2 and the door will unlock" in a text chat box, was a game of ritual dancing charades in an attempt to help that pour soul. He might still be there to this day... poor guy.
I have already argued the severe Cons when it comes to the 100ft radius voice chat catastrophe. Needless to say it doesn't function as an effective social communication tool for players. Rather only is helpful if you have already filtered through forums for a guild or posted your needs for one. We all know you can't scout in game, because well... no text chat.
I understand that with text chat comes Gold Spam. Trust me, my blacklist in FFXIV is full at 200 names. It also comes with trolls and children being children. I will however take all of that with my TEXT chat box, before attempting to find a group for "group" content without it.
As for some of these arguments about Controller in one hand and keyboard in the other.... seriously?... If you don't want to use the Text chat box... don't. Keep your headset and barking animals, and screaming children, and arguing siblings, and severely horrible music coming from the other side. The rest of us with any experience in a serious MMO what-so-ever would like our communication back.

Bacon✭✭I can't says I've read all 2600+ replies to this post but I have read through a good portion of them. I still have yet to see a good reason against text chat. I don't really have a huge interest in using it but many people do and as long as I can close it when I want to I don't see a problem.
Voice chat would be fine if people actually knew how to mute their mics and weren't just making a bunch of noise actively trying to make people angry. 9 times out of 10 the people using in area chat aren't actually chatting, they just left their mic on so we can all her them yelling at their kids to shut up. I was in guild chat one day listening to a small group that was questing together. One guys dog was crying for 20 minutes and when asked about it he said the dog wanted to go out. 30 minutes later he was yelling at the dog for crapping on the floor. Every once in a while you will hear something funny or someone trying to trade/sell stuff. From the sounds of it most people just turn chat off because it is more BS than actual communication.
Voice chat was a good idea in theory but obviously it didn't work out well in practice. Probably would have worked out just fine if people had the decency to mute their mic when they aren't actually using it but good luck getting the average person to care if they are annoying someone else.
This is an MMO and people need to be able to effectively communicate. Voice chat alone isn't working so maybe its time for ZOS come up with a plan B....maybe give text chat a try. There nothing anti social about it... Some people just do not want to have a headset on all the time or constantly converse via voice...
How is text chat anti social?
Yeah its so social on VOIP its basically listening to soap, whilst my wife watches her soaps...
Some people just cannot talk all the time, you may be int he same room as someone else still trying to be minor social with them As said a sleeping baby, there are many more things....
I don't think people understand we don't want voice removed... we just would like text chat as well...4 -

I'm not anti social at all. I'm probably one of the funnest outgoing people you would ever meet. In real life however, I have real things go on in my home that I feel it unnecessary to make other people.listen to. Laundry, Children, Animals, a Wife who likes to talk to me. I'm happy for you that recruitment in voice chat is not a problem for you. I'd say a majority of us have not been so lucky. In my experience save for 1 instance in Cyrodil where I happen to find a decent group to fight with for a short period, voice chat has been close to useless outside of Guild chat. Which like I said, I got recruited to from the forums. I don't know how assuming that anyone is "hiding" behind a screen is a good point. Would you feel better if we all played our games outside at the park? I also have no interest in hiding my voice. I do wish however that some others would. I'd say madness is to argue a point of anti social when what we are all asking for is a way to be more social. Thank you though for the hype up on voice chat, however we aren't arguing against voice chat. We are simply pointing out the flaws and problems that confirm our need for a text chat.1 -

Why do you need to go to forums to find a guild? I'm in 4 and never had to ask for 1, 3 are good active ones, and 1 is pure trading guild. Why can't you scout in voice chat? It happens ALL the time in PvP. Find a good guild, talk in there, group up, and if area chat is bothering you, turn it off. Why is this so difficult for you guys? So, I'm just throwing this out there. Your not one of those people that believes texting is antisocial are you? Now I'm not saying that communicating in the form of text is more or less social than the other. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you have 2 groups of people talking in a game, one using there voice while the other group using text because they are deaf. Does that make them antisocial? If not how does it differ from those who can use voice but choose text? Just because you have the option does not mean you are antisocial it just means you have found another way to socialize that best fits your needs/preferences and those around you. Unfortunately in this particular case zenimax has chosen quite poorly based on the fact that the largest forum on the eso site is around the need for text chat for consoles in eso.
Just something to think about friend. However I will respect your opinion.0 -

Otherwise the pointless bumps are against forum policy.
Honestly this thread sinks every time the pro text app crowd goes back to playing the game.
When theyre not around to quote, this thread falls back to where it actually ranks in terms of importance.
Pointless bumps don't fool zos into thinking it is important, content does.
And this thread is about one page long once the redundant arguments and points are removed.
