This is entirely Zenimax's fault, they are the ones who set up the system like this. There is no one else to blame.

What alot of you FAIL TO NOTICE is that the gaming community is not solely made of Americans, so therefore - We have to pay exchange rate differences, which can be quite large. It is not my fault that I live in a different country, it's not my fault that CC's are not a common thing my country.

People should not be stopped from using something, simply because of a current lack of funds at the moment, that doesnt make them poor. It just means the money is not there right now is all.

I can go ahead and use my debit card, I have $15 sitting there, but since I have to pay euros, it will cost me $25 for a sub at the current exchange rate. I am fine with that when the time for subbing comes, but now is not the time for subbing, now is the time for checking out the game and then deciding about subbing. If I were to give them my details now, the bank would stick my card into overdraft. I left enough money over for gas and an expected $1.00 pre auth check, NOT the $25 it would actually cost me.

It is the same principle as this: If you walk into a department store, and say "Hmm, I like those pants", then the salesman turns around and tells you that you have to supply your CC details before you try them on. You would not be okay with that would you? I know I would'nt.

The way my card works, is that even if it's a 'pending/auth', the money still gets frozen, and the bank acts as though it is a full on transaction, which means I have to pay for extra charges because of that. And if they were to take the money, and give it back, that's fine, but what about the extra charges I incurred because it's sitting there pending? Am I going to be reimbursed for that? No. Of course not.

I have experience with this crap through XBOXLIVE, and it is not fun, extremely time consuming and a very warped way of doing business. XBOX were kind enough to credit me though, and they also got back to me. Still not a useful word out of Zenimax.

From my experience and several others here, the authorization for EU is very quick. It's in the US it seems to hold longer than usual. Also I'm pretty sure 15 euro isn't 25 dollars, but aside from that- Your pant metaphor... You got the authorization bit a little early there, since I actually got into a situation where the authorization locked when buying pants once.

When you use your card in a retailer (pants for example), you use your card, it authorizes the same way (puts a lock on set amount) then as soon as the authorization is done, transfers the amount. What happened to me was that the authorization held a couple of days too long(this is usually so quick you dont notice it), so I was down double the amount(half reserved, half gone.) Gotta admit I was pretty pissed off, but it was a bank issue, and it seems people from the US are the ones most prominent with this problem in this case. I've only had it happen 3-4 times in my lifetime where I've noticed it.

So if you live in the EU you should be fine.

However, if you dont want it to overdraft in case of it actually pulling the money, disable overdrafting in your online banking system, then contact support and say that the funds weren't sufficient. This is probably the best option if you've had a problem like this in the past. I'm sure they're willing to do their best to help you if you stay calm and polite.

People like me who use things like Paysafe cards have straight up been lied to:

Here's a quote from Peter Hines, Bethesda’s Global VP of Marketing and PR:

“If you don’t like the game, of course you’re not subscribing to it. You get the game, you get your first month without having to pay for a subscription to see ‘is this thing a thing I like’? If your approach that you want to take is that, for example, you love Skyrim, you played it for 125 hours, but after three or four weeks you were done, then you can do the exact same thing in Elder Scrolls Online.”

“You can buy it, play the hell out of it for four weeks and go ‘Eh! I’m done. I did everything I wanted to do, I did a bunch of single-player stuff, I did a bunch of PVP, and now I’m out.’ Then you’re out. The subscription is irrelevant. The initial purchase is exactly the same as any other PC game because you don’t have to pay for the subscription until your 30 days is up.”

I'd post the source but i don't know if you're allowed to post external links...
Agreed a straight up lie, what a poor company..

Not sure what you mean. WoW also used to require you to input your CC information before getting your free month.

If you've authorized you should be able to play right now with your free month. It wasn't taken, it's pending and will be released after a short period of time.

This is a pretty normal practice. The part where they messed up is in doing the test charge for more than 1 dollar. If you have a normal bank account the money never actually comes out. It sits as a memo debit for a few days and then clears. I understand it is frustrating for those with less than the 15 dollars though.
Most every MMO has done the same when they first opened...maybe not years in, but in the beginning.
    LOTRO
    WOW
    FFXIV
Only difference was they did it for 1 dollar, but they did require your info before the 30 days.
I played FFXIV i had 30 days to setup my subscription thanks and less of the false info would be nice.

Actually yes and WoW was very clear about the process. Why are you comparing an unethical procedure done by one company that is not even entirely legal to do in the EU with a company who was upfront and honest about the entirety of the transaction. It is like comparing apples to oranges.

The fact remains Zeni stated clearly on the order form page YOU WILL BE CHARGED 0.00 it said nothing about with holding anything. This might be legal in America and people are stating USA laws but they fail to realize this is a game that is being played and sold WORLD WIDE. You must abide by international laws not just local laws.

The order form has changed some since this fiasco it no longer reads that you will be charged 0.00 which is fine and dandy but it still does not make what they did okay or alright or any more ethical.

So stop with comparing this game to other games that may have done something similar at release.

Do you realize you could cause an overdraft in peoples accounts?

Whose fault is that really? I don't think it's Zenimax's.

    It depends.

Had zenimax said at the point of subbing that they were preauthorizing the full amount then I would agree with you.

But anytime I've had pre authorization it's only been for £1 or less and it's always warned me first.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that someone has budgeted for a 6 months sub but won't have it until pay day in 2 days time.

For such a person, getting 6 months sub pre authorized on their visa debit card with zero warning and it does cause an overdraft, I think it is zenimax fault.

I was stating that this is common practice. There's more to it than just that. Seeing that pretty much every subscription service does this, means that there are possible legal reasons behind it.

If noone you know owns a CC, you have no valid payment method until the game-cards get released, which should've been released at day 1, but apparantly weren't. (Unless it's possible to bind a Mastercard gift card to a paypal account? I don't know.)

The Mastercard should work imo, since they at least accept regular mastercards. The store doesn't seem to work for me atm though, just sends me back to the front page when I try to choose a payment method. Don't know if it's the same issue you're having at the moment.

Seeing as you have a mastercard gift-card that isn't working, contact support and explain the situation. Be calm and polite over the phone and they'll probably do their best to help you out.

I just got an email finally from support after 3 attempts, I was trying to set a sub up through paypal but did not have the funds in the account.

They apologized and applied a 3 day compensatory time card to my account to bypass the auth for now, so I have the 30 days and an extra 3.

Thank you Zenimax for fixing this issue for me.

This is what gets me, it's so easy to keep people happy or make people who are feeling pissed off, happy again.

A few comments by zenimax in here to say they are looking into it or that it's not working as intended, they apologise etc etc etc and this thread would be 1/8 the size.

I think yours is the first positive response I've seen from them in the past day.

On a completely separate issue, I wonder if it's not working as intended because I've read loads have had the full amount authorised while I've read others saying they only had £1 authorised.

Which seems to imply it's set up correctly for certain banks payment systems but not for others ?

I finally got a call back from an awesome guy at customer service. Anyway, he said that some people have been able to order a prepaid game time card online or the store order it online (he mentioned game stop) and get the code for a prepaid card on the receipt. Something that those waiting on time cards may want to look at. I'm going to take a look around too.

You select a country when you ask for a call back. Don't they use a local number. If not I know some companies (like my phone company) don't charge me if I receive an international call. Only if I make one.

The problem is i have no CC and those other options are not in my Country...

Once again, it states that you need a valid payment method. Use your parents or friends CC to authorize if there is no other way.

They have none. Not everyone has CC here in AUS mate..
I generally use Mastercard Gift card (that work like credit cards) to pay my Subs but this game is apparently knocking them back and must be different so i cannot...

I live in Australia, i am not going to ring overseas and incur even more charges, i've sent in support tickets and got zero reply after my initial response, they gave me a cut and paste generic response, i replied telling them exactly what i've explained to you and had no replies since.

I was not rude and i am very calm, i feel if this is not corrected by Monday i shall just get a refund as many others are doing.

Okay, the "are you out of ideas already?" seemed a bit rude, but fine. Just got to say that I'm here to help people fix their issues they're having, and I'm not disagreeing with you that this authorization process is flawed. So there's no need to be like that.

Go here and fill out the form. Then they call when your number comes up. Last ticket took about five hours but that's just due to the number of calls. The guy apologized profusely for it taking so long but they have to go in order. Which I understand. It's worth a shot.

I like this phone support system better than others though. Instead of waiting in a queue on the phone with low quality hold-music(like others which I've been told to not compare with), they call you. Awesome to say the least. The one thing that could be improved upon would be inserting your reference number somewhere, seeing what queue-spot you're in.

If you have no other options, Ebgames has prepaid cards for sale atm for $30 (according to their website, I'd check store availability before going to one).
Of course, that means you are forced to pay for an extra two months, just to try out your free 30 days... ;(

Hey Seras - can you paste a link here? I just went to the EBgames site and couldn't find anything in their search. :\
