This right here. Even if people who dont currently own ESO signs the petition. It would only mean those people are people that are interested in ESO and are potential customers.

The more we get our messages across, the better. Especially if its in multiple mediums. This thread, /feedback ingame, petition, out source RP and ESO websites.

Yes, mature discussion FTW! I was afraid you'd get all offended and spew a bunch of defensive flames my way, as would be the case in 99% of game forums. Glad to see this community is a step up from the norm!

Do you think changing the title of this thread would be alright, considering it's in an add on request forum? Well then again they don't really have a suggestions forum either.

You answered your own question. ^_^
No, a suggestion not related to the mods or addons is not a good match for this forum... but it's not a good match for any forum on this site, and this is the *closest* option. If they add a suggestions forum (*nudge-nudge @Zenimax*) then that would definitely be the best spot for it, but until then, we just gotta pick the closest thing available.

In any case, we should do everything we can to communicate our feedback to the devs, and a crystal-clear thread title would be a step in the right direction. (they might not be inclined to read an addon request, as that is directed at addon developers, not ESO developers).

Signed. The chat system is not working for me. I'm hoping that chat bubbles will eventually be an option. It's absolutely horrible trying to communicate to players around you. Sometimes it makes me feel like I'm playing an MMO with mimes. It's not fun, it could be so much better.

I agree so many times i try to whisper my friends or group members any they don't see it, why make an mmo and still make you feel alone

Because looking at a bubble is the same as looking at a box.

You can create a new tab in the box with just say, group and whisper in it and leave zone and guild right out.
Even better, the box is in the lower left hand corner of the screen, out of the way of the pretty views I'm experiencing in the game. Visually stunning are perfect words to describe some of the environments I've wandered through..and never once have I had a problem determining if someone was speaking to me.

Also not signed because there are other threads on this very same subject. With very familiar names in them.
I am not spending a single penny on the game until changes are made to the game that I want to see.
    1) Remove having to be in a guild to sell items to other players at a kiosk.
    2) Cosmetic modding for armor and clothing.
    3) Difficulty slider.
    4) Fully customizable player housing that isn't tied to anything in the game other than having the correct resources and enough gold to build. Don't tie it to PvP, guild membership, or anything at all. Oh, make it instanced so as not to take up world map space, too. Zeni screwed this one up already.
Any /one/ of these things implemented would get me spending again, maybe even subbing.

Which is why it's nice to have the option to toggle if on or off.

This might seem like a very basic, unnecessary feature to you but there are a lot of us who can't keep up with what's going on in chat without knowing who's talking in an area around us like when we're roleplaying.

Well then, guess what? If optional chat bubbles are implemented, then nothing changes for you. All you'd have to do is leave the toggle button OFF. Meanwhile, those who would benefit from having chat bubbles will be happy, as well. Everyone would be happy.

Sorry, but yet again, this is not a legitimate argument.

Although I really, really could do with chat bubbles, instead keeping an eye on a small chat box, I think they are concearned with visual spam. I know you will say there are filters for that, but Star Wars Galaxies a few years back had chat spam problems which results in lag when visual updated are implied. Walking into town would be a visual mess of text which would then result in you spending the next few minutes try to filter it out. A good few years on with better technology you would hope this wouldn't be an issue but perhaps it's where they came from when deciding to remove the option for visual chat notifications in the beta stages. If perhaps you could see a chat bubble if someone whispered you, or had a way of directing visual chat just visable to you, or your group, by just clicking on you this would be more helpful.

Alright, to those of you saying that chat bubbles would stop you from enjoying the game's environmental detail: Please take a moment to watch this video (it's only 1 minute and 41 seconds long)

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGQmdoK_ZfY

When you have finished watching, please click the spoiler tag and continue reading.
    Spoiler
So... what did you see? Or more specifically, what didn't you?

The ball you were tracking was a fast moving target that required your constant attention, which likely caused you to miss other important goings on.

Well, throw 20 RP'ers in a tavern, and track the conversation happening between the three individuals sitting at the table in the center of the establishment. That chat box will be moving at light-speed; if you look away for even a second, you will probably miss something. The chat box happens to be tucked away in the corner of the screen... if your attention is spent scouring it for bits of the conversation you're participating in, what are you going to miss that's happening in the other 80% of your screen? Molag Bal himself could take a seat at the table next to you, and you'd have no freaking clue.

The conclusion is that focusing on a chat box is actually far more disruptive to the game environment than chat bubbles are.

Chat bubbles pop up right next to the person speaking; if you're invested in that person's speech in any way (i.e., engaged in conversation with them) then you know that when a chat bubble pops up in that specific location, it's something you'll want to take half-a-second to read. What about the 6 people at the table on the other side of the room? Are you following their conversation? No? Then don't bother reading it! The visual noise coming from their table IS the audible noise that you experience at a real restaurant; you can tell that people are talking, but all you hear is "blah da blah blah da blah" because your mind doesn't care about their conversations.

With a chat box, you are FORCED to pay attention to their conversation enough to accurately gauge whether or not the text is something that pertains to you.

Back to the RL restaurant scenario - imagine trying to have a conversation with the few people next to you if...
    • Every voice in the room was identical.
    • Every voice came to your ears at the exact same volume.
    • There were on visual indications (mouths moving, etc) to reveal who was speaking at any given time.

    ^That's a chat box.

But I don't RP! Why should I support something that doesn't effect me?

Whether or not you would have chat bubbles toggled on or off, the inclusion of that feature WOULD effect you indirectly. Whether or not you RP with RPers, I can guarantee that you do other things with them. And something about the RP community: they're awesome people to be around. RPers account for the most mature, welcoming, friendly group of gamers out there. YOU WANT RP'ERS IN ESO. You want MORE RPers in ESO. Community is hands-down the most important thing in an MMO - to improve the community is to improve the game itself. When a suggestion pops up that would improve the community, you should be drooling at the tantalizing though of its implementation, whether or not the feature in question is something you specifically will utilize.

So, you think chat bubbles will ruin ESO's beautiful scenery for you? Fine - turn them off. None of us will judge you on whether or not you use chat bubbles. But fighting against the implementation of a feature that would strengthen the ESO community? That is destructive to everyone invested in ESO - the RP'ers, the non-RP'ers, the developers, your guild, YOURSELF.

This isn't an "us vs them" thing. If optional chat bubbles are implemented, everyone wins; if they're not, everyone loses.

Please, whether or not you intend to use chat bubbles, help make ESO a better game by supporting their implementation. If you've already spoken against it, edit your post, and /sign this thread.

I apologize for the wall of text, but I hope that was insightful.

    /salute

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

Perfect writeup Hal. It doesnt really matter if you're for or against chat bubbles - cant really argue with that. ZOS need to come out of their hiding hole and at least give us a hint if its something they're even looking at. I dont mind if its a month away (lets face it, there are slightly more serious issues to deal with too), just want to know if its going to happen. Because it need to happen.

Hmm an ESO support team member got back with me when I asked about any social UI fixes and he said that they don't have any changes planned or in the works but we can suggest ideas via /feedback.

He ended by saying he looks forward to hearing all the ideas we have.

So maybe, instead of doing /feedback "please add chat bubbles" maybe we should actually suggest usable ideas for them based on what tons of other mmos are doing and twisting it up with things we see in ESO?

I just wonder if there is a feedback email so we could attach images and such. I've been experiencing a laggy feedback and bug report system where it likes to double or triple a letter you type. It's really odd.

Could you elaborate on that a bit?

Chat bubbles are so... standard... that it seems to me that there's not much to say other than "add chat bubbles". I mean, I'd expect they already know what chat bubbles are - no sense in describing what a chat bubble is to them and effectively reinventing the wheel... right?

Or are you saying we should come up with a system different than the chat bubble system used in most MMO's?

In my /feedback report, I basically gave them a mini version of my previous post, explaining how disruptive it is to have to stare at a chat box instead of watching the actual game world; and that chat bubbles would be a good solution.

Curious what you have in mind, though.
