Guess they just paid for kangaroo delivery for the last 2000 miles - and as there is a kangaroo shortage since the fires ...

btw I'm not complaining - it's reasonably fast for prime time.

I think ZOS paid for a better CDN this time? This is a much faster download rate than what I've gotten for previous major updates.

I am getting about the same as I usually do, which is likely thanks to TWC, but they may have had to make arrangements for this patch, since it was so large and so many people would be downloading it at the same time.

    YES!!
I didn't think to run the launcher while the server is down. That does work; it just won't let you log in yet.

But yeah, new music to go with the new year-long theme.
I liked the Elsweyr music, but I was getting bored with it.

For some reason, Steam installs the audio files for all three languages. In contrast, ZOS's launcher only downloads and installs the audio for the language that you selected. You can delete the excess audio files, though.

You should see folders named "depot", "game", "vo_en", "vo_fr", "vo_de". Delete the two "vo_" folders that are not relevant to you.

Good to know, had no clue about this.
However, isn't the launcher going to re-download the whole damm thing (the 2 "unused" languages) on the next update ?

The way the game is usually installed:
    1. Player installs ESO Launcher
    2. Launcher downloads data from ZOS

The way the game is installed if you have Steam:
    1. Steam downloads ESO from Steam (not from ZOS, not via the ESO Launcher)... the download from Steam is not selective and downloads all three languages, the PC client, and the Mac client
    2. Steam installs ESO Launcher (it's the exact same Launcher as the ZOS ESO Launcher--the Launcher displays a Steam logo if it detects that it was launched from Steam and the Bethesda logo if it was launched any other way)
    3. Launcher then applies any additional updates using data from ZOS (since the data downloaded from Steam is actually out of date)

So there are a few problems here. First, the download from Steam includes superfluous data. Like the Mac client (what @Mofasa saw is post #62). And additional language audio. Second, the download from Steam is a bit outdated, and the game needs to be updated with the Launcher anyway.

So when you first install the game from Steam, and it's the Steam client doing the downloading, that's when the extra junk gets installed, and that extra junk is courtesy of Steam. All subsequent updates are not done via the Steam client, but rather via the ESO Launcher that Steam installs. And that comes directly from ZOS, just like non-Steam users, and that should be fine.

Really, what Steam should've done is just install the ESO Launcher and that's it. Let the Launcher handle everything else. It's not doing its players any favors by first loading a copy of ESO from the Steam servers. First, because the Steam client isn't able to do selective downloads and that's why you get the Mac client and other language files clogging up space. Second, because the copy of ESO from the Steam server is outdated, so you have to do a second round of downloads/patches.

I guess the only benefit is if you have a much better/faster connection to Steam than you do to whatever CDN ZOS uses. In that case, maybe it might save you some time. But much of that is lost via the inefficiencies mentioned above, so for most people, it's really a net negative.

And so to answer your question, you shouldn't have any problems with subsequent updates, since that comes from ZOS and you're getting the same updating/patching experience as non-Steam players. It's only the initial download from the Steam servers when you install it for the very first time--before the ESO Launcher is even installed--that's the problem.

Reinstalling a fresh copy via Steam. I deleted the game last night because I’m moving ESO to a different drive.

I’m reasonably sure that once it’s downloaded I’m going to find out I download the old game and will have to download a third time.

You don't even have to do that.
A patch starts downloading as soon as you open the launcher, as long as the patch has been deployed to the Content Delivery Network (CDN).
For this particular patch, the servers were taken down at 2am, and the patch was deployed at 3am. (Eastern Standard Time)

Or it will start downloading automatically if you already have the launcher open when the patch is deployed, as it did for those who were waiting for it this morning.

    Which... answers your initial question.
If you see a pause button, then you're already downloading the patch.
Downloading the patch is only part of the entire "patch maintenance" process, and begins well before they bring the servers back online.

Just in case anyone thinks that actually means 100mb/s.....

    https://www.canstarblue.com.au/internet/fastest-internet-plans-australia/
Generally speaking, the fastest household internet speeds that you can expect in Australia are around 100 megabits per second (Mbps) downloading, and 40Mbps uploading. 100Mbps means you can download around 12.5 megabytes of content per second.

Our television streaming and *** needs are met with a slightly cheaper plan.

Also generally our gaming needs. Just not when ZO schedules a complete re-download of their client in the middle of an event.

Yeah, that is why I wrote Mb/s and not MB/s - i get currently 6.7MB/s which is about what my connection can do at this time of day - near prime time it is just about half of the "promissed" capacity - that's pretty normal in Tassie.
