Thank you very much for taking the time to explain so clearly. It all makes sense now.

I may be in an even more complicated situation since I first downloaded the game for free in open beta in January 2014 (from ZOS), then stopped playing until august 2014 where ESO launched cheap cheap on Steam - but I had kept my ZOS intallation.
Obviously I have a Steam launcher (which I only use on patch days) and 3 languages (but I've played the game in all three languages at some stage). Of course I've reformatted my PC a couple of times since then but I've always copy/pasted the game's directory back and forth and it worked fine. So I've no idea what my status is with Steam ! And I prefer not to mess up with it !
Well, enough of my life stories, you've enlightened me with regards to my question and I thank you for it. Hopefully Steam will wake up and provide some sort of sensible service some day - I *hate* this company and only buy stuff from them occasionnally because they have unbeatable prices (sometimes). They should use this opportunity (the complete ESO overhaul) to clean up the mess on their side.

In total for a fresh install it was just under 3 hours, in the UK and with a good internet package, but also while playing another MMO on the same computer which might have slowed it down a bit.

ESO patches have always been like that : slow & slow & quick & slow... I assume that's because it splits the download/install in several parts that alternate, and the progress bar calculates the overall time. What appears as spikes in the download speed is, imho, simply the phases when the launcher verifies and installs already downloaded code.

I'm a little worried because I have just about 54GB left on my HDD and still 9GB to download with 14% done. I hope the launcher has checked before, that I have enough free space to complete the whole process.

that is the patching speed not the download speed - it has to unpack and apply the patch after downloading.

Well don't forget that ESO updater downloads a file, then applying the patch, then downloads a new file, applying that one.
Both process showing a speed, Mb/s, in the progress bar.
Higher speed is usually caused by the HD/SSD.

Yeah, this, mine sped up by a factor of 3 since start of downloading.

Same numbers/times here (though different country, and I'm working instead of playing).

I left my computer on with the client open when I left for work this morning. If the server is responsive it shouldn't take long since I have direct fiber connection. Probably done already, but I have no way to check.

I finished fairly quickly as well - less than an hour - but I'm not sure if that's because it went well, or, as you stated, the whole thing hasn't actually come yet.

Guess we'll find out soon enough.

Server-side maintenance is not effecting the client-side download - what the client needs is on a separate server from which I are currently downloading what we need. ZOS has to do other stuff related to the server-side. i guess there is nothing else to download after the launcher has finished downloading, and we will be able to play right away when the servers will be back up-

I see. Well it took me a little under 2 hours. Am now working on Steam Client and PTS.
Most people I know are done by now as well, it all went pretty fast for those of us who aren't being held back by unfortunate connection limitation. In the end, it has nothing to do with maintenance times.

I did the update and I got an invalid error. Tried to run repair and it would not work, so I need to redownload the game again and I get speeds for 300+ MBs and its only going at 2 MBs. LOL

Don't do that - wait for the servers to be back up again - that error message is most likely due to that the servers aren't back up yet.
