There is nothing AT ALL funny about that. The performance of this game is horrible. I’m paying REAL money for this crap and THAT’S what they put in the PATCH NOTES! Hmm...

Maybe that's why I found it funny. I haven't paid for a subscription in several years.
Seriously though, you should consider detaching yourself from the game if these things gets you upset. Your own well-being is worth more tbh.

    Hi everyone,

I want to personally apologize for the line from today's patch notes. What was meant to be a joke was ultimately distasteful, insensitive, and offensive toward an issue that should be taken seriously. As mentioned in a different thread, we do have a fix going into Update 21 that will help with some FPS issues in Cyrodiil, and we're continuing to look into how to improve overall performance. This is important to us.

    Please accept my apologies.

It's pretty absurd that you need to write a formal apology for such a small thing. Everyone knows you had no ill-intent.

    This world is becoming boring.

I don’t think any of us have anything against Gina, or blame her for any problems or think the joke was offensive. It just happens to be probably the biggest pain point this game has had in its lifespan and it’s been so for all that time just about. It’s such a pain that any jokes just come off as pretty cringy.

I only found it funny in context because it was by Gina.

Out of context - super unprofessional.

If some other Bethesda Fallout 76 community manager wrote that in a FO76 patch note - all hell would have broken loose on the internet. Every gaming media outlet would have gone berserk, and Bethesda would have to issue a statement disavowing Gina like they did with the nylon bag thing.

Before you suggest that someone else leave the game over an issue that you're dismissive of, perhaps you should first get over yourself, Mr(s). PAWS.

Lag means different things to different players. To some, it's an occasional inconvenience. To AvA players, it is the main reason their friends have quit the game. It's the main reason AvA is extremely frustrating on a nightly basis. It's a main reason their hobby, which they've stuck with through its problems, is slowly dying a painful death. It's not a new issue, it's well over 4 years old.

Why anyone sticks with it is their business, but the onus remains on the service provider to get it right and treat their customers with respect.

Extreme frustration is a bad feeling, especially when regularly experienced during something that's supposed to be fun.

Gina's joke, to many, invoked those negative feelings. Further, that she would even go there suggests she was comfortable her boss would be okay with it. That's telling. So is the fact that the joke she calls distasteful is still in the patch notes.

Would she have joked about the group queue issue during the event in the same way? No, of course not. That would have been outrageous because the players affected were extremely frustrated. The only difference is that it would have offended a a far greater number of players.

I don’t think anyone’s saying lag isn’t an issue but for everyone to get so upset over what was clearly a joke and a play on a popular song is crazy. I was in Cyro on Sunday and it was horrible and totally not enjoyable, I wasn’t happy at that but still found Ginas post funny.

It’s not for me to say you need to find this funny but I also find the fact people get this upset and offended ridiculous, it’s a game, lag has been there since day 1, players regularly joke about it and yes some people have quit the game because of it but that’s their decision, people shouldn’t be offended against this in their memory.

Ginas regularly thrown jokes into the patch notes and attempts to bring humour to something that’s often very dry, this whole thing will likely stop this because who knows what someone’s not going to like next.

But hey maybes it me, i generally find a reason to joke or laugh about some of the worst things that have happened in my life so this tiny little line of text in a small update in a video is pretty meaningless. I do worry that the ever growing trend of people getting offended at the smallest things leads to an out of proportion reaction and leads to people wrapping everything in cotton wool to make sure no one gets upset.

Sure it was good for a chuckle but you know what? It ain’t funny anymore. I mean we’ve been banging our heads against the wall for years now, with absolutely nothing from ZOS. As far as we know they can fix it and just won’t invest the time and money. Yeah yeah it’s not Gina’s doing, but the time for jokes about lag is looooong past. So, haha, but also I’m only laughing a little because I don’t pay for this game anymore so ultimately I have no investment in its future.

If i don't find a joke funny, i simply don't laugh at it. I don't necessarily end up putting forums on fire like a total crap and make someone apologize because she made people laugh.

Gina acknowledge the issue of lag. But both of us are completely powerless to change it.
One way of making the situation feel less bothersome is to joke about it.
It's the very same reason to why stand up comedians should be allowed to joke about everything, even if it is sensitive.
And if you think "But Gina isn't a stand up comedian!" well, you just missed the point of why I said "It's the very same reason".

Guys, of course Gina was going to apologize.

For one, its the classy thing to do. I don't know her, but I suspect she's a classy lady.

Second, well, her joke - as funny as it was - inadvertently highlighted her company's issues with communication about performance problems. Most people are frustrated over those communication problems, even if they think the joke is funny. That's a PR problem. I wouldn't care to be whoever approved her joke in the Patch Notes either, right now, as its usually pretty awkward when you do something that ends up making the company look bad. If there's a PR problem, any sort of PR problem, someone inevitably ends up apologizing. That's just how PR works.

So don't be surprised ahe apologized. That's how the world works AND how classy people roll.

Again, those of us who weren't thrilled with the joke get that it was a joke.

We get that Gina was trying to be funny and not intending to be offensive or anything bad.

Nevertheless, ZOS' persistent communication issues over long-term performance issues is bad - bad for players and a bad look for the company. It's important for players to hold them accountable for fixes and the lack of communication over important issues.

The problem isn't the joke - its ZOS' lack of good communication that the joke highlights. But ZOS probably isn't too happy that the community just got reminded of that lack.

Uh, well, the problem isn't the joke itself.

The problem is the lack of communication the joke highlights, because the only recent official comment of any sort on the lag is...the joke. And the last comment on possible improvements was ZOS basically going "Oh, huh, apparently not having the guild roster update everyone's data by typing your own name in the search box might actually make a difference! We're really glad some random player figured that out..."

Its not "dumb QQ" to be annoyed at ZOS for their lack of communication on long-standing issues.

Nor is it "dumb QQ" to respond to the joke by saying "If you want this to be taken in the spirit it's intended, its a lot more likely if you have more robust official communication with the community about long-standing issues than by going with *radio silence* straight to *joke*. "

In other words, good communication fosters the sort of relationship with the community in which jokes can be made and taken in good spirits. I want ZOS to have better communication practices, so we can all enjoy the jokes.

Second, well, her joke - as funny as it was - inadvertently highlighted her company's issues with communication about performance problems.
I might as well take your post as a springboard to clarify my position.

First off, I didn't get the joke. I thought it was just a weird, incomprehensible piece of banter.

Secondly, I did hold it against Gina, as well as the company as a whole, since it made light of problems they are solely responsible for.

Thirdly, if you think that's an overreaction and I should chill, sure. This is a game, a tiny, inconsequential part of the world. Am I deeply upset? No, but within the confines of this forum all we're talking about is the game.

Fourth, they don't have a communication problem, or at least that's not the main issue. They have technical problems that they just need to fix. How long has the game been on the market? Most people say the performance problems really started with the "lighting patch". Some say they are due to bot and exploit countermeasures they had to put into the game around the same time. The point is, it's been 3 1/2 years since then. Perhaps it's very difficult to optimise the software, but they could simply upgrade the servers at this point. What ZOS call a megaserver is not one server. Every instance of a zone has it's own server, as far as I can tell. In other words, all it would take is beefing up the Vivec Cyrodiil server and perhaps a few other ones. I may be oversimplifying things, but it seems clear that they are unwilling to make the investments necessary that would actually fix the lag.

And the better part is that it is a joke that most of us actually laughed, liked. Can you believe that? How can i laugh at this joke when there's lag issue in Cyrodiil?

Expecting good communication without being able to handle a simplest joke is also quite funny. Yes, it is qq and yes, it is dumb as it goes.

    This.

Nothing wrong with the joke itself, I gave a little chuckle to it myself. I’m usually just a forum lurker and don’t post much but when I read that patch note I felt the disconnect that there is between ZOS and the community.

Rapport has to be built and established before anything that sensitive can be talked about casually. Even though a lot of the forum usuals may feel that rapport already, Joe Shmoe that may be newer to the game that has come to the forums looking for answers may not.
