ESO Launcher Crashes on Update 9/04/2018

    C O X Communications is my ISP, They don't appear to like your launcher updating format and block it consistently. Been like 3-4 updates now that I can no get to my system using the Launcher. I shouldn't have to pay for another service in order to update this game in particular which I am paying for. I have never had an issue with any other gaming company with updating my games via their game launcher services, let alone my ISP.

    I had been downloading the file from the host.developer.log file link for my partial files into the wife's computer and then copying over her entire game file over my own and bypassing the launcher in order to get my game to play. Now her game won't update no matter what method we have been trying. Now neither of our ESO plus account can get the update. Looks like if this continues to proceed with the way it is, then we will be forced to cancel accounts and move on to the next game. I come here to relax and get away from stress of work and other such life events, not to stress out even more in order to make multiple attempts to update a game that should be easier than this.

    I truly believe, Strongly, that the two are related. I'm starting to assume that September 2018, Zenimax paid a huge amount of money to contract Akamai. More than likely for server attacks for cheating people using macros, dll injections and table / script writing, as well as bot users.

    Secondly, I passively and truly believe Akamai is purposely blocking 2 files, which they may or may not even be aware of thus causing a majority of us to download the patch manually or via VpN.

    However, Since it is September, 2018 that these issue have been taking place, and no one from Zenimax has been commenting, only makes them guilty as charged.

    I say, start using your social media. You tube, Twitter, Twitch, Facebook, whatever, and let the general public know what zenimax is doing. As for myself, seems a bit of poetic justice really. I say that because the crap I'm personally putting up with, feels good to watch a twitch or youtube with some angry video game nerd rage about ZOS and their poor if at best, customer support and the way things are starting to go around here.

    Yup, it's sad. I thought this was the greatest thing in the world. Stuck around and poured the cash bucket in this place for 4 years. Now, all my hard work, blood sweat tears cash time and effort, all turns to Ess aich Eye tea.

    I haven't played in a couple years and I thought I would come back and try it out, but I can't patch, just like everybody else, so it looks like I won't be coming back anytime soon. Seems like the great Bethesda screw job has infected Zenimax.

    The problem has returned this patch so I am re-posting what I posted 9/10 since it appears to be working again.
    ZOS, the problem appears to be both your code (logging repeated attempts leading to a crash) which manifests for certain ISPs, and those ISPs handling of WebGet for a certain file (the *.z01 file).



    The Launcher has been crashing for me as well with an apparent endless loop of writing the following to the host.developer.log:

    12/01/2018 22:05:22 WebGet Error: (http://151.205.0.95:80/data/016c4bdf3940ecb3/live.patcher.elderscrollsonline.com/products/eso/874DCDCF-C40C-4956-92FE-E39B8DC4764E/depot/depot_262to264/depot_262to264.z01) (151.205.0.95:80) (3:956)
    12/01/2018 22:05:22 Hostname not found in whitelist (151.205.0.95)

    Once the log got over 415K MBs, the Launcher would crash. Since I was able to manually download game_player_262to264.z01 with the above URL, I assumed it was a false error and the crash was from the endless loop of writing to the log (an exception in the exception handler). So by doing the following, the Launcher patched successfully (though slowly):

    Set Deny Write permission to Everyone for host.developer.log in the Launcher folder (prevents Launcher from crashing).

    The Launcher runs very slowly so you can only see its progress using Windows 10 Task View. Once you see Play, you can kill the Launcher, set the permissions back for the log file, then run the Launcher again and it should load normally.

    Wow just wow... after using our phone to hotspot we managed to get it to update and run but after weeks of fighting it we had moved and gotten busy with other stuff so we were basically getting our rewards, figuring one day things would be smooth and I would be bored and get back into it. Nope only more issues, no answers, no word from ZOS. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't play anymore, but guess what ZOS!? I've already canceled my ESO+ and will not be adding to close to $500 you've gotten from me and my wife. We will play and we use your resources, but we will not be paying you anymore money. You are now my backup, my candy crush my mindless time killer not worth paying money for. You've broken our heart ZOS/Bethesda... Fallout4, Fallout76, ESO, no more Obsidian Fallout. I knew I should've quit you, but I kept telling everyone they were wrong you loved me it wasn't your fault. Well I'm packing my bags and moving on.

    Edit: Icing... my wife tried to submit a ticket and it requires a game consultant file now, but the instructions only tell her how to click the gear in the launcher... the launcher which hangs. I told her how to do it manually and it won't let her submit it because the file it made is over the 10MB limit their ticket system allows. The file THEY created with THEIR tool. SMH As a software developer myself, this level of ineptitude is STAGGERING.

    Same ISP here, and have been having issues since September. The manual method still works for me, as does using a VPN (I just use a free one). The latter might work for you and your wife as well.

    I also use *** as an ISP. I don't think the game is updating yet after disabling write permissions. It's get's to the point where it says "download stalled", and the launcher is totally frozen. This is at 3%

    After a couple of successful updates, I finally had this problem again. I was happy, in a way, because now I can document how I fix it whenever it happens. This time with pictures!

    After you get the problem where the launcher hangs, bring up the task manager (you can ctrl-alt-delete or right click the bottom bar on your screen to pull it up) and kill the launcher process.

    Open file explorer, and find the root folder for ESO. For me it is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Zenimax Online. It may be different if you don't use Steam, or chose to put it somewhere else.

    Search for *.partial files.

    Leave this window open, use another window to find the host developer log file. For me it is in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Zenimax Online\Launcher.

    It will take a while for the file to open. Once it is open, go to the bottom and look for the web get error.

    Copy the line under the web get error code and paste it into a web browser. You can see that for me it was http://151.205.4.25:80/data/0170453ad13ca5f2/live.patcher.elderscrollsonline.com/products/eso/874DCDCF-C40C-4956-92FE-E39B8DC4764E/depot/depot_262to264/depot_262to264.z01. It may be this for you, or it may be something else.

    Then hit enter. You'll get a prompt to open or save the file, choose save.

    It'll just take a second or two to download. Once it is complete, just go up and edit the URL line and change the .z01 to .zip. You may have to paste the URL in again, depending on the browser. Then hit enter again and save the other file. Once both files are saved, you should have the option to open the folder or see downloaded files, so select one of those.

    Also, pull up your window with the search for partial files. Right click on one of the files and select open file location.

    Now just drag and drop the saved files you downloaded to where the partial files are. Then run the launcher again, and it will apply the patch. It will automagically delete the partial and complete patch files when it is done, and you should be able to play.

    NVM. I got it now. Must be the server is getting hammered or something.

    This turned out to be a real rinse and repeat process. I had to do this about 5 times until I got to 301to303.z01. Now the launcher just crashes instantly and doesn't even attempt to patch.

    In the list of partial files for the 301 to 303 update, were there actually five listed? There was one time I had to manually get seven files: 3 for the launcher and 2 for vo_en under the Zenimax folder, and two more for my documents/elder scrolls online/live/ folder.
    If you haven't been able to connect for a long time, that may be what's happening.

    OP here,

    Mainly due to life, but a small part due to the lack of time to fix the issues each patch myself, I've moved on from ESO. I've cancelled my subscription and won't be checking any notifications. I do hope that they fix this issue or find a workaround for the users that still enjoy playing this game.

    I’m glad people have found workarounds but no way am I doing any of that anymore for sonething I’ve paid to buy and paid subscriptions for, for two people. I’m in software dev and I game to escape, this is too much like my job. It requires too much manual stuff to properly automate as the second I make a script to automate it, a name or path or addess... something changes or needs to be looked up to work again. Also my wife is not going to do this without me walking her through it. It really saddens me too since due to her playing single player ES games this is the first mmo shes ever been interested in so its the first we’ve been able to play together like this. :(

    Efit: also its the handling of issues by ZOS. This deny, deflect, then pretend nothing is wrong while preventing support approach maddens me. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see theres a major issue when looking st the forums or reddit so take your lumps, apologize, and fix it. We’re not idiots and you can’t jedi mind trick us into believing otherwise.

    I agree, I work as a programmer and I.T. support. This is just bogus that Zemimax thinks it's okay to push this on us or even just push this on the side. If my department had ISP related issues, we would be working on resolving it with said ISPs as-soon-as-possible.

    I too thought about writing something to automate getting the z01s and zips, but I can't see it being worth my free time.


    I am downloading the patch on my PC right now (Over the weekend I was trying to use my laptop). So far so good, the launcher has gotten to 14% and going. On my laptop, it was crashing at 2% originally, and then 4% after I got the files manually.

    Well, too good to be true. It started crashing with the same issue.

    Im haveing problems with my iphone hotspot, when i try to load my character it wont login and when it does i can play very well till i zone and then crash again to loginscreen.

    They were extremely helpful. While it was a little tedious in my situation, it wasn't too much to do just to get the game working.

    so after enplaning the situation further to bethesda through the support system and why a vpn would help i think but no hopes that they might actually find a fix to the launcher problem and ping and latency problems as well. Because a vpn redirects web traffic and the files sent, and seeing as how akamai seems to be linked with both issues from what i can tell it seems reasonable that it is in fact them that are causing this problem and the ping/latency problems as well.

    Well I have tried everything that everybody has said to do and it still doesn't work for me. So I did the easiest thing and just deleted the game and decided to stay away from anything that has to do with Bethesda or Zenimax. These two companies have become toxic cesspools of corporate greed which has killed anything to do with customer service. I feel sorry for anybody that buys ES6 when it comes out. Good luck.

    Okay this is getting out of hands. I have been having THIS issue, since the beginning of November, it has now been a month since i started to have this problem but I have yet to see a patch for it. Please Zenimax Fix this issue.

    LOL!! Sorry to hear this but people have this problem since September 4, it's already 3 months, not just one. We've been asking for a fix since then, but nothing changed so don't even bother asking, it's useless.

    Would be nice if they could give us some news about this ridicolous problem at least.. maybe in a year or 2.

    Add me to the list of Verizon customers that have the Launcher issues for patches.

    I know that ESO has announced that it is Verizon's responsibility to fix the ESO patch files, but I just wanted to get on record here.

    LOL ...going on 3 months and still no fix just blaming of ISPs and the only support is from the players.

    I'm guessing this must be too hard for them to fix and thus it will become a feature like animation cancelling =)_s

    Well this is horrid to say the least. I wanted to come back to ESO after a years break and it seems this has plagued the community for 3 months now with no fix from Zen; just constant blaming of the ISP with little to no communication to the player base . I actually called Verizon and they laughed at them. I suppose I'll leave like the rest.

    Same...It has become far to burdensome to constantly patch the game myself. I have also canceled my subscription, and I will no longer be checking this thread. It was fun while it lasted.

    Hopefully this eventually gets fixed for everyone else that still wishes to play the game.

    Same here. Last patch I just deleted the game and re-installed it. I'm not prepared to do that every patch. I closed my sub and will play something else and see if this is fixed in a month or two.
