And what bothers me even more is this special offer I got from ZOS - to buy a bunch of stuff from the crown store and gift it to others. I would have a couple of friends, where I know they would enjoy to have one or the other item, but they would never be able to afford it due to where they live and because they have more pressing issue in real life, like paying for a proper education. Due to these boxes I do not want to give ZOS any more money - and so I cannot gift stuff to those friends as well. I have just 2250 crowns left - I might buy the masked bear today and then that was it basically for the buying part - no further enjoyment can come out of this for me - just because of these damned boxes - a game ruined for me and it will make me angry anytime I see something, what I would want, but I cannot buy it, because I do not want to give ZOS any more money.

And this will make me leave at some point in the future - because I will be reminded of this every time I will see something what I cannot have without to support ZOS - and I do not want to support them any longer, if they are that abusive.

The part I bolded, this is going to give incentive to hackers. They will now have a good reason to hack accounts and "gift" things to themselves or others. Sorry to be off topic, but that caught my attention and brought to mind all the hacking I saw in the other MMO I played.

This is a dangerous road to go down which risks seriously alienating long term customers who enjoy the game. In the short term, it might well produce a bump in income, because there will always be some who opt in, but it is unfortunately prone to increase burnout and the sense of players that ZOS is more interested in scamming money out of the player base than supporting a really fun, lively game community.

I understand that ZOS is a business and that ESO wouldn't exist without decisions that support their bottom line. I'm accepting of the need to put money into the game for it to continue to exist and grow. But this kind of gambling particularly when there will be items obtainable through no other method strikes me as divisive and inherently predatory.

The money might be good, ZOS, but you're making a deal with Clavicus Vile here; he's going to turn around and have Barabus bite you in the community-side ass. If you haven't seen the bitterness of former SWTOR players over gambling boxes there, give it a serious look. A lot of them play ESO and to say "they are concerned" would be a wild understatement. I love ESO, and hope it won't push too far in a cash-farm direction.

Well this would be something what the support staff would have to do "by hand" basically, that is not something auitomated.

They basically told me, that if I would want to gift crown store items to other players, for example equip all guildies with the same costume, I should just tell them what I want and to whom it should be gifted - and make a list for all that and they would then consider what special offer they can make me for that - and manage the transfers, if I decide to accept that offer.

That sounds to me like they have to do that "by hand".

Edit: this is the text of the offer:

    Hi Lys,

We appreciate the time and effort you've put into The Elder Scrolls Online, and as such we'd like to give you a special deal on items in the Crown Store.

For a short period, we can enable gift purchases for your friends or guildmates, allowing you to equip or outfit your fellow adventurers with any of the items currently available in the Crown Store. Would you like to outfit your entire guild with the same costume or colors? Or perhaps you'd like to make sure your teammates have the potions required to tackle a tough dungeon or Trial? Just ask!

To take advantage of this, simply respond to this email and let us know what items you are interested in. We'll respond with some tailor-made deals just for you.

Well, whatever, that is still an offer, which allows for something, what is normally not available - namely to gift stuff from the crown store to other people. It would be even better if one could gift ESO+ - then i would not have to select items for other people, but they would get crowns via ESO+ and could buy what they want and would not have to deal with what I chose for them. I would have really liked the opportunity - but not now, after they had p*ssed me off with their RNG boxes.

Edit: I will give an example for that - I am in a russian guild and these guys, even they cannot understand me easily and have to google translate, are nice and helpful - and with some I have email contact as well and we exchange pictures and stories from our lives and share experiences we made. These are really nice people, but they will never pay for ESO+, because they could live from what ESO+ costs in a month for a full week - this is far more expensive relative to their life circumstances than it is for us. This is a case, where I would have really liked the opportunity to give them a 6-months subscription, so that they can experience ESO in full.

The way I understand the gifting is that anyone will be able to buy something for a fellow player starting in the next update (or thereabouts), so even though your exclusive offer would be "by hand," I imagine the standard gifting will be automated (especially at holiday time due to demand, or so they hope), therefore the concerns about hacking this system are valid. I'm sure ZOS is aware of this and will protect folks the best they can, and am in no way suggesting they would want this to happen.

However, I thought you personally would be insulted by the offer, because for me, it's like saying, "We know you've really supported this game, but that's not enough; we want more. We know you have lots of disposable income, and we want more of it." It's too aggressive and demeans your prior purchase history. (Happens to be a reason I despise these Crown Crates)

For example: Someone buys flowers from their local plant nursery, maybe once or twice a month during the warm seasons, only for their own modest house, but they love gardening. They've formed a friendly relationship with the clerks, and after a couple seasons of shopping, the clerks are aware that this shopper is a wealthy sort. The manager of the business soon becomes aware also, and decides to start a campaign to get them to spend more money. He sends mailings to their house, listing possible bulk purchases for their friends and family. He even chats them up the next time they come in.

How long would you continue to shop there?

Ah well, that is an experience you make all the time when you spend more than others in a business. I am not offended by it, sometimes offers like this are convenient, like for example getting early access to something what the public will get far later or where you get kind of a butler at your side, to make the shopping experience more enjoyable or where they offer you champagne and some snacks, while models are showing off their collections. Can I blame them for trying to make it easier for me to get what I want?- As long as they do not p*ss me off or pressure me to buy something, all is fine.

what you describe is pretty much standard business practice....

every morning i go to a local cafe for coffee - it's really good coffee. while i could buy all the paraphernalia and make it myself i'm lazy and it is pleasant to sit outside and watch the world go by....

every other day they ask if i would like something to eat and i decline, politely.

the local supermarket regularly sends me offers - buy one of these and get one free etc....

Of course they want more money, and I might want to buy more - as long as they have a nice and polite way to catch my attention I will eventually have a look at their offer. I just cannot have people, who try something like that by force. I just have to think about those over 100 phone numbers on my black list, which would call me several times a day, if I would not block them. Even changing phone numbers once in a while does not solve this problem - some people are just radical in their ways.

Thanks for posting this, it is quite appalling. As if the Crown Store potions could be better than ones you could make yourself. Aren't you insulted?

Well, whatever, that is still an offer, which allows for something, what is normally not available - namely to gift stuff from the crown store to other people. It would be even better if one could gift ESO+ - then i would not have to select items for other people, but they would get crowns via ESO+ and could buy what they want and would not have to deal with what I chose for them. I would have really liked the opportunity - but not now, after they had p*ssed me off with their RNG boxes.

How long would you continue to shop there?

what you describe is pretty much standard business practice....

every morning i go to a local cafe for coffee - it's really good coffee. while i could buy all the paraphernalia and make it myself i'm lazy and it is pleasant to sit outside and watch the world go by....

every other day they ask if i would like something to eat and i decline, politely.

the local supermarket regularly sends me offers - buy one of these and get one free etc....

With this I have in mind, a coffee shop in Paris, a coffee bowl in front of you and a well done amount of Calvados in a tulip glass - ah and I forgot, of course Brioche - warm brioche and coffee and Calvados, hmm, that is a good start into the day.

It's be cool if, whenever I went to the grocery store to buy food, they had a blank box on every isle, and in those boxes: who knows? Could be food... could be rocks... But hey! It's a gamble, and the Grocery boxes are only $50 bucks... You just may have to buy several hundred to actually get food.

There's nothing wrong with that! People like too gamble, duh!

I just won't go to the grocery store any more to buy food! Like, hello? Simple.

Other grocery stores are doing it, so every grocery store should do it!

Interesting read, but still leaves it wide open to be changed at any time and the main thing, why do we have to go to an outside source for a decent breakdown of the system, WHY was it not published first to the game's own actual customers and player base, Why have we the customers and paying investors been ignored in the place where our concerns have been voiced, the game's own forums ?

OH and Archeage and B&S had the very same Q&A on MMORPG and some other sites saying exact same things, then a month later had box exclusive P2W items in the Boxes.

Matt Firor: The concept of Crown Crates is pretty easy: for a 400 crown purchase, you get a crate full of consumables as well as a chance at customization and convenience items. Crown Crates are obtainable exclusively in the Crown Store, and the consumables they contain are the same ones that you are probably already purchasing directly in the Crown Store. The difference is that you have a chance to get additional items in a Crown Crate – the same items that are on sale in the Crown Store. There is also a rarer chance to receive a discontinued limited-time-offer Crown Store item. The rarest items are Crown-Crate only items that we will cycle out every quarter or so for a new set.

If you do receive a special premium item in a Crate that you have already purchased from the Crown Store, instead of a duplicate, you will be given Crown Gems. These Crown Gems can then be spent on a (new) section of the Crown Store to purchase another item.

So, in a nutshell: you purchase a crate of consumables, and you get the chance for cool gear that was once on the store but was discontinued – and a really rare chance of unique customization and convenience items.

So, I'd get the consumables that I don't buy in the crown store [first italicized line], a chance to get items that are currently on sale in the crown store that I haven't bought because I don't want them [second italicized line], a much rarer chance of getting the discontinued mount I DO want, and an infinitesimal chance of getting something exclusive.

Good gosh, why am I not rabidly clamoring for the chance to gamble on this stuff? /sarcasm

I buy one item semi-regularly from the crown store. Mimic stones. So I can craft styles I know but don't have the style mats for, possibly due to how those style mats are obtained. I don't buy potions, or food. I don't buy the costumes. Since the wording is careful, "special premium item in a Crate that you have already purchased from the Crown Store", you're not going to get gems for potions or scrolls or food that might be dups [that I don't buy anyway]. No mention of how many gems those alternative items will cost, and whether it will be a one for one exchange [example, guar for senche].

    Not selling the idea, Matt.

I've been subbed since the beginning. That is going to change in the near future, I'm afraid. I am willing to buy items when I want them. I am NOT willing to gamble on getting items I want, when items I am not interested in and don't want will make up the bulk of the gamble box. I also face the issue that, since I haven't bought a lot of the costumes and other items that will make up the "special items" in the box, I would be stuck with them and unable to trade them for gems to get what I actually want. @ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom any other information you can let us have about the dup items for gems?

Matt talks around the real issue - and that is the gambling aspect and that the exclusivity of cosmetic items in those boxes will make collectors to either have to stop what they like so much (namely collecting items) or be forced to gamble for it. With chances of "extremely rare" this is a cash grab, Matt can tell what he wants, that is why they have this exclusive in the first place. All covering up and talking it down does not help here, anyone with a bit of a sense for probabilities can see, that this is made to milk players, who are not able to grasp how low their chances will actually be to get any special item and even a much lesser chance to get what they actually want.

Just imagine how happy someone will be, when he opens like 30 boxes and gets ... a royal jester costume ... hurray, that is what he wanted for years, to have paid 12,000 crowns to finally get the jester. Anyone and his dog can buy it for 700, but he had the rare opportunity to have paid 12,000 crowns for it. Now if that is not a reason to throw a party ... and proudly present that costume, what matches him best - the royal fool ... eh jester.

Exactly how I feel. I refused to buy these in other games and what I read about here does nothing to change my mind. The only worthwhile items in the crates are the cosmetics. Consumables? I will just craft them. Xp scrolls? I'm near cp cap.

I have no fear that this will turn pay to win as many games have implemented this without letting that happen. Mat misses the problem entirely. Customers want to buy what they want without gambling away their savings. Put these themed "extremely rare" purchases on the store like you should. This is a marketing ploy and your not convincing anyone otherwise.

Yeah, if the stuff I want to buy is going to be available for specific time periods only, I'll buy crowns to get what I want when I want it. I used the crowns from my sub to buy the dlc I wanted. I stayed subbed to support the game. Not much reason to continue that at this point.

The only thing I would lose that I would actually miss is the crafting bag. However I managed for 2 years without it. It will take a little time to rearrange items among my characters, but I'll get along without it.

Nah, that will make for a special service - a la

Dear customer, we have seen you have supported the Elder Scrolls online with 180,000 crowns in the last 12 months and paid for subscription as well. Now we make you a special offer, just for you. You will get 20% off of this and we will bill you accordingly to this with 1048€ - this included 1 year ESO+ and 180,000 crowns at 20% discount. We will as well put all those crowns which you will get with your subscriptions immediately to your disposition - so you will have 198,000 crowns.

We also recognized, that you bought Crown Crates and had a rising tendency throughout the year - so we assume that you will buy 495 boxes throughout the next year. For your convenience we will deduct that from your crown allotment directly and sent those boxes directly to your account - this are 198,000 crowns, so your actual crown balance will be zero.

Please let us know, if we should automate your crown purchases, so that you'll never run out of those.

    Something like this

I heard EXACTLY the same 18 months ago on the B2P (Tamriel Unlimited) annoucement : ESO was 100% doomed to become P2W before you know it. Yet 18 months later there's still not an ounce of P2W in ESO.
So sorry, but I don't buy it at all. Crown Crates are NOT compelled to make ESO P2W.

Do you really not see the irony in that statement? You are claiming that those who said the game would become P2W were wrong, yet here we are witnessing the next step on the path to P2W being laid out right before our eyes. No one said it would happen instantly, but rather the opposite, that it is a slow and steady progression which the game is continuously moving towards.

It's not going to be p2w. I have played many other games that have implemented the same thing that never went that route. It still is a negative direction to take the game in. These things were made popular in f2p games and probably mobile games. It is a cheap marketing ploy to get people to spend thousands (and they will) in order to get what they want. Matt argues that even so they contain consumables, xp potions, and other things on the store. However, these items are of little value to the player base. It's the extremely rare or past cosmetics that are what players are after.

These random boxes do not belong in a title such as this. They needed to show a little more integrity and continue with transparent business transactions, not f2p marketing schemes.

    Yup.

Firor's answer to the people who don't get what they are looking for in the bag is to collect Gems, then buy it directly in the Gem Store. That really speaks to what they are trying to accomplish. They want people to play Lucky Bag so they will earn Gems. To drive people to collect Gems, the really good stuff will be in the Lucky Bags.

Plus also remember you only get gems 'IF' you get a rare or exclusive item you already have
