I really enjoyed this game and it was in my opinion the best MMO on the PS4. No text chat and a horrible queuing system was the only reason I quit this game. Went back to a worse MMO but at least I have text chat and can complete end game PvE content whenever I want.

you simply can't design a video game especially a mmorpg using some primitive UI design criteria. that list in this case is invalid. a mmorpg is far more complex than that. also, you can't design a mobile phone like you're designing a video game. a bug in the tamriel's map will make some nerd kids mad but a bug in the apple maps may take your life.

The users don't care about the complexity of the code. For them the UI is the software, not the code.
And the UI isn't even that complex in ESO.

If you design complex UI's or simple ones, the base is always the same: observing real users while they are using the product.

Or at least, it should be the base.

anyway. I'll give you examples why people need using text.

usually consoles are placed in living rooms where the TVs are. Living rooms generally are the biggest rooms in a house which means, it's more likely they'll share walls with other rooms. which means unless you're living alone, you need to shut your mouth late at night.

text is permanent, voice is temporary. in a social game like this, you'll need to teach people things, give instrucitons to your group members, theorycraft, share links, advertise game related stuff etc.

Finally, you talk about context. But you forget to add many other context parameters:
    • For most console players, the gamepad is their main input device
    • Using a keyboard on a couch isn't that fun
    • Shifting between devices is always a pain
    • ...

It suggests...you have to focus on a solution serving the gamepad user. If you have one then you could support keyboard players in THAT solution.

With TextChat you force de facto the players to use a keyboard. Not only this isn’t advisable, the keyboard will bring new usability issues: the shifting devices paradox.

language issues, especially in europe. when you play eso, it's easy to understand the game designed by americans how? like many other american products their R&D teams and designers won't give a f. about the rest of the world. there are people out there understand what they listen, type well but unable to speak english clearly. I personally had that issue when I failed to explain something (like a dungeon boss etc) in english.

disabilities, social issues, temporary illnesses and others.

did they really research how often mmo players face with these issues?

Language issues aren't solved by typing.

I can't answer your question about disabilities, social issues, temporary illnesses and others. But I might do later.

    Mr. Einstein says:

"The solutions of the players aren't important. Don't look at it. Never. These solutions are evil. Players are players. They don't have the academic background nor the experience in solving usability or UX solutions.

But a dev team, any dev team, should take the requirement(s) behind the solution very serious, in this case: we need better communication features
    ".

You know the story behind the Ford Edsel?

People drive often a lot with their cars. You would assume they have many excellent ideas about design, features and functions in cars.

Just, like you pretend you have with the UI of games.

Ford assumed the public would and the Edsel was 'designed' for a big part by the opinions of the public.

It was a fiasco, it's still considered as one of the biggest mistakes in the car business.
Inflation-adjusted it costed Ford about $1.85 billion.

Why? Because car drivers don't have the academic background nor the experience in designing cars or one of its features.

    They are drivers, not engineers.

Why should ZOS build a new Edsel?

We need a solution for improved and more communication while using the Gamepad. The keyboard should be used as a secondary solution.

ZOS should support they keyboard better and more, but not necessarily with TextChat. Probably it's much better to have keyboard support for the 'new' gamepad communication solution(s).

The gamepad is the king input device on the consoles. You can ignore that, you can say ‘hell this is an MMO, the players should use a keyboard’, but they will not do.

If you accept the gamepad as king-device then your options are limited.

    TextChat with a gamepad? Really?

You know that in an average MMORPG, players use 7 words on average with an average length of 3.6 characters in TextChat? It means they use on average 25.2 characters.

Now, you could wonder if they wouldn’t use less characters with a gamepad-textchat solutions and they probably would.
Still, the gamepad is too slow to communicate fast.

I also found other nice studies about chatting in MMOPRG’s, things like about what they chat:
    • 56.7% of the players is chatting about reactions to the gameplay
    • 20% negotiates about the gameplay
    • 9.5% is responding to reactions
    • 6.5% used it for greeting each other
    • 5.5% is talking about technical issues and problems
    • 1.1% is using off-game topics
    • 0.7% use it for other stuff

    You know what it means?

That you can streamline chatting with half-fixed or full-fixed sentences.

THAT would be a solution that’s serving king Gamepad.

Why are you rephrasing my sentences and ideas all the time? I already asked you several times to stop that behaviour. Would you like it that I ignore you? It's ok for me, it's just a click on a button. You just have to ask.

No, my solution is not about TextChat.

TextChat means: you can enter what you like. In that solution you have to suffer the pain of switching devices when you are a keyboard user, or you have to suffer the pain from a slow input typing device as the gamepad.

In my solution you're limited in what you can say.

With some good analyzing ZOS can derive what people usually want to communicate while using TextChat.

Fixed sentences, stuff like 'Give me gold' or 'Help me to kill the boss'. Half fixed is a possibility too, first you select 'Give me...' later you select some words from a fixed list.

That’s a completely other beast. You don't have to switch between keyboard and gamepad and you can communicate pretty fast. The disadvantage is that you can't communicate everything.

Since I've already debated this I'm just going to answer the OPs titled question "Console players how do you feel about having no txt chat?".

    Ok let's see...
I feel slightly PO because it's supposedly an mmorpg yet communication is limited to local area voice chat where I'm either forced to listen to the dreggs of the gaming worlds daily goings on, which includes everything from crap music, terrible mics, family arguments, bathroom breaks to racist slurs etc or leave the channel and not interact with anyone at all while I go about my business.
Has anyone at ESO live ever noticed the distinct lack of community events from console when reading them out?.

I feel sad but unsurprised that many have left so soon after console release or that I've seen "lack of a chat box" be cited among the many reasons for quitting on many seperate occassions, a few are now wishing to transfer from console to PC but most have just left completely as a transfer wouldn't be an option for everyone even if it was made possible.

I feel let down when I watch ESO live and there's still no acknowledgement of this much called for basic feature despite the support of the majority of community members whom have taken the time to constructively add to those many dozens of threads. (seriously even PC players don't understand why we don't have text chat)
But hey at least we're all upto date on the really important issues like what time the "evening of tea tasting special blends" get together is on PC/Mac

I feel annoyed that it doesn't even seem important enough to warrant a simple yes, no or "we've heard you and we're taking another look at that as an option for you guys" answer from zos.
This helpful poll from Pino shows that a majority of console users would find a use for text chat as they either already have a keyboard attached, attach one whilst playing ESO or would indeed attach one should an optional text chat become available.
    forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/222369/do-you-have-attached-a-keyboard-to-your-console-ps4-or-xbox-one/p1

I feel embarrassed not just for Zos but also myself when I see that Rocket league (an indie game with a tiny budget and which was free on PS4) actually has a chat box whilst this AAA mmorpg title doesn't.

I feel mostly dispondant with this game these days overall, so much so that it's to the point now where I log on... I raise an eyebrow at seeing so very few people around (PS4 EU)... I do my writs and first pray to and then curse the RNG... I sigh in dispair at the stale economy... I think about crafting and then think "what's the point, they can buy it at the crownstore"... I feed my mount, I facepalm the latest ability nerfs, I pause for a moment to ponder facing the load screens... and then I log out.

And when I've done all that I log into the forums of sunshine and light here to see if there's any news on the issues important to me, sadly disappointed here too.

On a brighter note FO4 is almost here  whilst it's not an mmo it really doesn't feel like ESO is at the moment so please reconsider the decision which removed text chat from the port to console.

    My 2 cents.

No, my solution is not about TextChat.

It's text, isn't it ? So text it is. It will use a text box in whatever form, which is what people have been advocating for in this thread (and many other threads) all the time.

Sub-culture language is enough, base language is not required. And it's a *language*, which means that you don't forget it easily (as opposed to shortcut keys or command lines which you forget quickly as soon as you don't use them). Furthermore it is a subculture language which is often shared across all MMOs.

    My 2 cents.

Couldn't have said it better myself, fantastic post!!!
