I truly do not understand that.
I play on PC and PS4. Both platforms are great, both platforms can learn from each other.
PC will learn the controller interface from PS4, and the PS4 should learn the text chat from PC.

On PC, the controller interface will be optional, people who want it can use it.
On PS4, the text chat also would be optional, people who want it could use it.

Pino is even confusing key labels with key functions...

That's getting a little bit too far in terms of either lack of intelligence, or plain trolling.

Anyway I got no answer to my question, which leads me to believe that Pino is just here for the sake or arguing, without having anything to suggest, nor the slightest idea about all these features that supposedly would fulfill the multiple purposes of text chat much better than text chat.

    I'm done here folks ;-)

R2 is used for something else whilst you have a chat box open?

    That's not what he wrote.

He said we should press Enter or use R2 to open the chatbox.

    Remember:

*press enter to open up chat
    * type "hey let's group"
    * Press enter again

Ok, not sure about xb1, but ps4 they could remap the left side of touchpad for horse/map, and right side for chat. Theres countless different ways a chat could be initiated, using the few buttons we have.

Great idea. It really is a waste to use the huge touch bar only for the horse.

You overthink things. This is not such a conundrum to mankind as you make it out to be.

Can you show me the enter key on my PS4?

And you didn't read it well. We wanted to communicate, in this case, with one person, not with a group.

You can go back to your drawing table.

Plug in a 10 dollar USB keyboard or use the ps4 provided virtual keyboard. I believe the enter key is mapped to r2 if you use the virtual keyboard. They would need to tweak the controller settings to provide a map to open the virtual keyboard, perhaps holding down r2 for a second or two. Personally I wouldn't use the virtual keyboard because it's easier to press enter, chat, and enter again to send.

If you want to communicate with someone standing next to you just start typing. If you want to communicate with the entire zone type /shout before your message. If you want to communicate with anyone privately in the game world regardless of zone or voice channel type /whisper before your message. There are so many awesome ways to use text communication.. And the best thing about it in my opinion is that you have a written transcript of everything going on for the past 10-20-30 minutes, so if you have to go afk it's not a big deal, you can just go back and read

The more he comments the more apparent it is that he's never played a game of any kind with a text chat channel.

Pino, all joking aside I think you need to just let your ego go on this one because through out the multiple posts on multiple threads you've trolled you're just making yourself look more and more foolish.

Your condescension is tolerable to a point but it's ultimately boring and played out, you've obviously no experience of any game using chat on any platform whether PC or console and if you've nothing constructive to add to the discussion then there's no point in your being here.

You're no doubt able to get away with your style of trolling through moderators having more important things to do than read your long drawn out and ridiculous replies containing equally stupid analogies in which you attempt to dodge questions raised and basically insult people.

It was amusing to watch your ineptitude for a time but I'm out for now too, should you form a coherent or constructive reply to the many questions you've avoided and ignored whilst trolling then by all means allow someone else to let me know as I don't trust the ability of your IQ enough to form that kind of opinion.

Pino...really man, just quit. I fought this battle FOR text chat since April and all the points you make just go so far off topic that is really comes down to this.

Players are asking for text chat on console as an optional feature. It was in the console version, bring it back and let the community decide if it's usable.

    Timeline:
This was from the Jan. 2015 Q&A on if Text Chat would be on console:
markywings :Hi ESO. I have been looking forward to this game all year and can’t wait for it to become available on the PS4. I would like to know if Chatbox will be available on console versions, as it is on the PC? I am deaf myself so I would be relying on Chatbox to allow me to communicate with other people on the game.

zos_konk :Yes, you have the option of using the text chatbox on console as well. Furthermore, you can plug in a standard USB keyboard into your PS4 and use it to type, if you want.
The chat window collapses by default, but can be pinned to the HUD if you want.

In April 2015, ZOS decided to pull it:
    ZOS_Sage (Creative Director):
”Text chat wasn’t added to the consoles because of a number of factors. First, many of our early tests demonstrated what we already knew: it can be cumbersome to type in a text chat with a controller, especially when time counts.”

Based on that decision to pull it, I posted a poll in April 2015:
    1) Here is the original text chat post and poll I started BEFORE the game was even released. Look at the results and the feedback from players that weren't even able to play console yet. They all knew that Text Chat was needed for a MMO and for ESO console. HERE

    2) Instead of continuing the battle FOR text chat, I've posted a solution for a better grouping tool which would help finding other players to play with HERE

If ZOS wants this game to last, they will need to improve the games player communication tools. Right now, voice doesn't work for groups larger than 4 people on console.

Out of all the comments and statements in this thread, spanning 17 pages, I have to admit that this is really the only one that matters. It does not imply a solution, but a course of action. No matter what ZOS does, whether it is voice chat, text chat, or both, they must improve the player communication tools.

About your timeline: only brave people, correct mistakes. ZOS showed they have cojones. Respect!

But...that poll...lol...you're asking PC players (console ESO players didn't exist in April), who are used to TextChat, if they want TextChat in a biotope they don't know. Not one of them played ESO on a console at that moment.

Now, if you excuse me, I don't take that poll serious. I don't take any poll of this forum serious, but this one is as biased as bias can be.

But I'll have a look at your solution for Grouping. That one seems far more interesting, I'll certainly read it tomorrow.

So basically you are saying that I have no clue about usability, human factors or UX because you assume I never played a game with TextChat.

At the same time you're the big usability guru, because you do play games. With TextChat.

    Ok.

When people don't share your opinion, they are suddenly trolls. Something moderation should deal with, however you complain they don't.

    Ok

You are even insulting me directly. My replies are ridiculous and stupid. You even suggest my IQ is low.

    Ok

Btw, IQ doesn't say much about someone his intelligence. It's just a tool that's having a predicting value about your later results in your academic career, it can even predict your later position in society.

But it doesn’t teach you if someone is smart or not. Not even close.

I’m disappointed you didn’t know. A bit usability guru should have attended cognitive psychology classes for some years. They teach you such things in that environment.

Maybe you should play more games. With TextChat.

What I don't understand is why we can't recruit people on forums already. Doing it through game chat is horrible cuz you always get idiots & squeakers screaming through their mics making everyone else hate people trying to form groups. And if its not that, it's people who spam invites to others who don't feel like grouping or are busy that give normal recruiters a bad name. At least Destiny lets people recruit in their forums and forming raid or nightfall teams is easy and organized. Sure the game is an annoying cash grab and there's no recruiting in-game but they did get the forum recruiting right. ZOS should make a forum page exclusively for recruiting, selling gear, and other things like that to make it easier on us.

They actually did. There was a closed console beta before late April 2015, might have been a alpha. You are just new to the history.

I basically polled MMO players that happen to play ESO MMO on PC. For people that play MMOs, they expect text chat because they have used that system to communicate since EQ.

Polls aren't exact science nor do they represent all the ESO players. But it does show the passion around a topic. Forums communicate that well and BTW, this is way to communicate with ZOS...through the forum.

They saw the poll, they responded to the thread, they made their choice and possibly their own grave as far as ESO on console goes. We will see if ESO console makes it to it's one year anniversary in it's current state and the players that have been here since day one.

I don't mean just guilds, I mean group dungeons, regular dungeons, running Craglorn or Cyrodiil, & other things like selling or trading gear. We shouldn't have to do everything in-game when people ignore that stuff a majority of the time & it shouldn't be like Destiny where it's only on forums. We need to have both available as options so it works better. (Plus in my case, I'm on Xbox, not PS4)

No hard feelings, uberkull, but your poll is ubertrash and you know it. :)

I don't think it will go downhill that fast. But I don't think they will have a career as UO when communicating with each other remains a crime.

I don't have a degree in social psychology, but IMHO without communication you can't build a team, a platoon or a community.

It's key they have a look at it. Far more important as new FX, DLC's and gamepad support for PC.

Probably the marketing department inside ZOS is currently stronger as the departments who know how it is really working.

You'd be wrong on my count....consoles since the PS2. Console & keyboard user since I started DCUO years ago.

And when playing DCUO, I tended to do this:

    Chat with league mates.
    Run instances.
Do some open world stuff....while keeping an eye on the chat box for something interesting.
Maybe join a group from the LFG chat.
Help some random who shouted for help via the shout channel.

And then chat with leaguemates...all through chat. Oddly, not a single one of the folk I talked with complained about device switching.

If people didn't want to chat, they didn't. If they were mid instance / fight...they wouldn't respond.

I believe you. I believe that you played like that. But in that case you don't need TextChat. An in-game private forum was a better choice.

How so? With text chat you can monitor help or LFG requests in real-time. With a forum you need to stop what you are doing to search through threads and may not even have a chance to respond until several minutes have passed making the thread already obsolete since the group could be filled or player already found help or given up. Text chat updates in real-time so you know the information is current when it is typed. There is no way you can navigate a forum interface in a few seconds while you can read text chat that quickly and even respond with only a few more seconds of effort. In that time I'd maybe find a thread topic that was relevent and recently updated (which may not even be related to the topic).

You spend enough time on the forums to know that topics change several times over a short period of time. They can be derailed, already answered, contain off-topic posts or tangents conversations, etc. All of these would lead you to believe that the topic is current when you view most recent time stamp but until you actually spent time reading the thread you won't know if any of these things are true or not. Talk about a huge waste of time!

I think that the demand is a bit biased. Many Pro Chat people are...PC people. It's even worse, it are in general PC people who don't play at a console.

I do understand why THEY ask for TextChat, but they really forgot that the console player is another being:
    • has usually no keyboard attached
    • when he has a keyboard, he will have to swap devices a lot
    • is sitting on a couch
    • his screen is usually at a distance

It suggests you have to be very careful with keyboard solutions.

Like I see it: the game should be full playable on the consoles with a gamepad, however it certainly should support the keyboard more and better.

I don't think ZOS should focus on 'new' features, but instead improve the existing ones.

Next they should focus on features that benefit all and not a selected 'elite'.

If all is fixed then they might work on the nice to haves.

It's really not easy to develop a nice usable TextChat solution on the console. There's no way, you only should copy the PC its version. It will not work out, I'm pretty sure about that one. The context of use is too different.

We also don't have a clue about the characteristics of the players. I am in that team as well. We all do.

What if 80% or more of the console players is playing ESO like a single player game? Alone but together?

And I do have far more questions about the composition of the users.

Without that data you can't propose any functionality that could have an enormous impact.

I swore to myself I wasn't going to post in this thread anymore but that's becoming exceedingly impossible now.
From the post I've seen. It seems to me that Pino has never used a well implemented text chat in an rpgmmo.
No Geekopolis and the others that were mentioned are not rpgmmo's. Ultima Online may have been, idk, I never played it. So even if it was an rpgmmo, I have no idea how good the text chat capabilities were.

Before posting anymore of your inane studies. For the sake of my sanity and anyone who responds to you. Would you please go play a true console rpgmmo like FFARR, DCUO or even FFXI, if their servers are still running FFXI has been on console since 2004 and did an amazing job with text chat.

FYI most posters in this thread are most likely previous console rpgmmo players who want something, they already know for a fact, works on console mmo's.
I want to change the world. I'm just to lazy to do it.

Honestly i dont care about text chat, I LOVE the social aspect to the game, but then again i dont want to force other people to play like i want to so i have no problem with people getting a text chat other then the fact that less people will be social and thats lame

    First MMORPG?

Text chat is just as social as voice chat. The difference is, that with text, it is easier to filter out the very anti-social behaviors common on the voice channels. The two methods of communicating work well together and actually promotes more socializing because no one gets left out.

Nah dude I played wow for years, and text chat was nowhere near as social as eso's voice chat. But like i said i wouldnt mind an optional text chat, but I'M satisfied with voice chat. I can pvp with it, i can group for dungeons with it, i can do trials with it, i can *** around and TALK about the universe with it, and it all just feels great for me. But i say for ME because i know some people want it so i respect that want.

I want it. I have social anxiety and am really uncomfortable talking in voice chat especially since a lot of people comment the way I talk. I don't go on the game to deal with stupid people's crap comments, I go on to have fun drama free as much as possible.

Honestly man most people are very nice and accepting on voice chat. I was in a long conversation once going on about religions flaws and the universes theories and this one guy in the convo had a reeeeeally bad stuttering problem, but the whole time no one even mentioned it or pointed it out, he was talked to/acknowledged and treated just like everyone else.

There's dudes with autism and everyone that knows about it is SUUUPER nice to them. Its really nice to see that.

I'm sure there are *** but be yourself man, most people are more accepting then in real life, where they will judge you a lot more! And if they talk *** to you, just wittily talk *** back, they'll respect you for it. Like if you have a lisp or something and they make fun of it just straight up own it and say that their mom loved your lisp when you screwed her last night ;D
