It's actually pretty tame, and a successful console MMO that has text chat enabled, just like its 10+ year old predecessor that allowed text chat in the days of the PS2.

I'm sorry that you've had such terrible experiences w/ online text chat.

But nobody wants to force you to do anything. If you don't want to use a keyboard after a long, hard day at work, you don't have to. You can lay back in your favorite comfy chair and just do your thing and use voice chat to your heart's content, just like you might be doing right now.

But if you WANT to use a keyboard to sell that super awesome gold Dwemer motif that just dropped for you while you're in zone, then you'd have that option too. : )

I'm not knocking the quick chat wheel, it's just inadequate for a lot of things.

The code for text chat is already in the game from testing it during beta, it's just not enabled. It wouldn't be hard for them to re-enable it and put an optional toggle in the settings.

PC version will have BOTH voice and text chat, and I don't subscribe to the theory that ALL console gamers are somehow incapable of using a controller and switching between text chat and voice chat when each is the better option.

For some people, I think it's the idea of being too much energy having to constantly plug your keyboard in and out, and juggling it on your lap. For me, (after a hard days work of construction) I just want to recline back in a chair and relax playing ESO without worrying about what communication preference my group would want to be rolling that night.

Limiting any sort of communication for an MMO is always a terrible idea. Its SUCH a terrible idea that it shouldnt have to be explained to anyone. Least of all the Developers. But it seems here at ZOS, everything requires us to guide them by the hand to give us the experience that we should of received from the start.

I cant possibly imagine who made the call besides a no-gaming exec that refused to listen to reason. Because I just dont want to believe a Developer would be dumb enough to think that somehow a limited text interaction overlayed with a sole area VOIP chat option would fullfill Gamers needs in an MMO.

Console Players are missing out on numerous communication opportunities and outlets.

Selling Wares- Typically requires a low level of spamming at the very least to do so if the player wishes to go outside of the Guild Store to sell things. How obnoxious will it be for someone to be constantly repeating themselves on Comms?

Discussions- The discussions are limited to the individual speaking at the moment, lest everyone speaks and it becomes an indiscernable jarble. Text based chat eliminates this by posting the statements.

Guild Recruitment- Same issue as Selling Wares. How are Guilds supposed to interact with the masses that DONT visit the forums? How are Guilds supposed to interact with each other without going outside of the GAME? If the Gamer is forced to leave the game to do anything that should be possible in game. Youre failing as a Developer.

World Bosses- Players dont feel the need to group up for these. On PC they simply announce the Boss is up in Text Chat and ask if anyone is interested in dropping it. With the limitation of Console Players only able to communicate at a close proximity to other players. How are they going to do this?

Im sure there are other things that Text Chat are used for that Im not thinking of. But the point remains. The short-sightedness of the Console Team has put Console Gamers in a situation that prevents us from fully enjoying the MMO experience due to some moron thinking that a limit on communication methods was the greatest idea ever.


Stop making excuses ZOS and FIX IT.

Agree that we can switch, but what about if we don't want to have to type and would rather use wat the devs have allotted us to use in the game..joining trading guilds, grouping, guilds in general etc with group, area and guild chat?

PS4 player here. I have 47 friends on PSN all in the same guild and VC only is a mistake. We want both or at the very least have a chat box that can post zone and guild texts

This needs to happen anyway. Deaf players are screwed. I got to stand and watch a conversation for a minute with no idea what was going on since no textbox = no general subtitles.

I get almost no lore as my companions may speak but I can't hear it.

Then there is absolutely nothing stopping you from doing exactly that.

You'd be able to do that exactly the same way you do it now, which I personally find to be an extremely obtuse method, but you seem to prefer.

You can go ahead and go on some website (w/out typing, apparently) and see who is recruiting and send them a message (again, w/out typing apparently) and wait for them to message you back and see if you were accepted, or something.

For me, I'd prefer just having someone type into a zone that their guild is recruiting, a blurb describing what it's about, and then I can decide whether I join them or not right there on the spot.

I'm honestly unsure how you personally go about seeking out guilds and groups in-game via the voice chat functionality, but if it works for you, keep on doing what you're doing. Nobody wants to take that away from you.

I had a PS2, I played BOTH of the MMORPG's on the PS2: Everquest Online Adventures, and Final Fantasy XI. While I wished there had been a voice chat option for parties/groups in those games so one could communicate in groups without taking hands off the controls or switching to a chat window, they both had text chat, which I used and worked very well for Guilds, Area/Zone chat, private messages, as well as trades. After all the PS2 has USB ports for a reason. EQOA also has a quick-chat system that is superior to the one in TESOTU, sad to say.

I have a PS3, I have played three of the MMORPGs available for it: FreeRealms, DCUO and Defiance and the virtual world "Home" While all 4 have voice chat which works VERY well in groups/parties, they also have text chat for Areas, Guilds, Trading, private messages, which also worked well for those purposes. After all, the PS3 has USB ports for a reason.

I have DCUO now on the PS4, it also has both voice and text chat, just like the PS3 version does. I also know that FFXIV has both. Even the Air/ground combat game, War Thunder, has both voice AND text chat. After all, the PS4 has USB ports for a reason.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited needs text chat, it's that simple. While voice chat is fine for small groups and parties, text chat works better for large groups, areas/zones, trading chat, etc etc. The fact that it doesn't have text chat on consoles, is not a feature, but a bug. No other console MMORPG or MMO-ish game lacks text chat.

I've never played an online game where text chat was anything but vile and full of hate speech and gold sellers spamming their wares.

So add it if you must, ZOS, but please don't force us to see it.

On an even more selfish note, I sit at a keyboard working for 10 hours a day. When it's time to play a game I don't want to have to bring a keyboard along. I played ESO on the PC, if I'm going to be sitting at a keyboard anyway I may as well keep playing on the PC with the better graphics it offers.

You'll see no one , no one , who wants keyboard support and text chat saying it should be ANYTHING but OPTIONAL.

Only the tools who can't handle letting other people have choices are saying no options allowed.

Personally I find giving people options a much nicer and more polite way of doing things.

So my option to keep text out of the console version can't be my only way of thinking concerning this game or else I'm a "tool"? Aren't you thinking ur way of thinking is the only way as well? so, from ur logic, u would be a "tool" also right?

I post my twitter in all my sigs on every fourm I'm a part of...not for little kids to critique where I'm from or my looks. U don't like that I do not want text chat in the console version, no prob....but this personal attack fishing expedition u guys are doing is pretty childish. And it won't change my stance on no text for console....if thats the effect ur looking for

absolutely. text chat is no less required than on the PC. it is a fundamental part of existing in a huge world where the point is to meet and group, and sell and ask for help. guilds especially need text chat, as well as small groups and friends.

it's not an option. it's necessary.

I played ffxi for six years and can't imagine what it would have been like... keep in mind SquareEnix made sure the Xbox version had text chat and now ffxiv on both the PC and console has text chat.
