What about the ONLY (and I do mean ONLY) sensible option of having both Text Chat and Voice Chat as viable options on all platforms.
All The Best

I would like to thump my chest and say "I told you so", but honestly it brings me no satisfaction. As a PC player, I want console to do well. I want every facet of the game to be a financial success in order to generate revenue for new content on both platforms.
This was depressing when it was announced, and the predictable reaction is depressing.
The most depressing thing about it is the fact that this reaction was so predictable. Some of the decisions over at ZOS really make me shake my head sometimes.
Launching an MMO w/o text chat is like selling a luxury car w/o power windows. Seriously ZOS.

That is inexcusable. Plus...not everyone is spoiled enough to have a computer at their convenience at all times.

On PC I can just ask in zone chat and several people show up in a minute.
Way to remove a needed feature!
Other thread was locked so I'll put my comment here.
Text box works so well for identifying:
-who the person is
-what chat they are in
-understanding them the first time
-scrolling back to review conversations
-right click menu for adding them to whatever, ignoring, friending, grouping, etc...
-private conversations without having to switch channels (super cumbersome)
-being open to all conversations while only responding to the one you want
Voice chat will never be able to be as elegant as the chat box for all of these things.
Voice chat is way more effective at getting information across fast, especially in a group setting, and for casual fun/goofing around with friends.
Both text and voice are required/desired in an mmo setting, and trying to stuff a square peg in a round hole, or a round peg in a square hole will meet with the exact results we are seeing today.
Strange that they would consolidate it into the shortest thread.
But I digress, an optional text chat box has been successfully implemented in console MMOs over a decade old; it seems far simpler to add the text chat box that already exists in code than to go through a laundry list of tweaks just to have a system that is still less elegant than just typing what you want to.
Sales, recruiting, grouping, and a number of other issues could be easily resolved by the addition of the text chat box and would circumvent the archaic and, quite frankly, entirely unacceptable need to visit third-party websites and forums just to utilize the systems in the game.
ZOS is already slated to add VC to the PC version of the game, allowing players to communicate both through text and voice for the situations where each is strongest.
Console players should also have this versatility and not be railroaded into a lesser Elder Scrolls experience simply because of the medium they choose to play the game on.
We ALL play ESO, and while there are some great things about ESO on consoles, there are also some deficits to the experience due to clumsy handling of certain staples of the game, such as guild recruitment, finding non-dungeon player groups (Cyrodiil, world bosses, tough quests, etc that the group finder is inadequate for), selling of wares outside of guild kiosks, etc.
Those who wish to continue to use only VC can continue to do so and use the same methods that they are preaching to others currently as workarounds for these clunky systems, and those who wish to remain in-game and not play a console game while tied to a laptop, PC, or tablet in order to fully utilize the in-game systems can use a text chatbox.
Everybody wins.

Too many 'expert typist' having 2000 wpm convos (along with the lfg lfg wts wtb wtb, best prices for ESO gold around yada yada) in text, is not wat the console master-race ppl want. Stop wat ur doing, scroll up and up and up then go to reply to something u want to respond to, only to find the convo has changed 20 times since

Okay, I came here from a thread with a very good reason text chat should be in the console games: There are deaf players. There are players with speech impediments. There are players with social anxiety. There are players who are physically unable to use voice chat.
So saying it doesn't belong on consoles is saying these players do not belong in the game.
