No next gen console here, did have a ps3 but got rid of it cause I have become PC centric. I would get a next gen console but the libraries on both consoles are still too small to warrant a purchase from me. Also looking to save for a master PC that can push 4k at fast fps so no money for consoles lol.NewBlacksmurf wrote: »I have a few questions:
1.Is their a separate dedicated voice server for voice chat or is it running alongside the game through the same servers?
2.How many alternate channels are available?
I ask because things like team speak may have 100 members and takes place on separate voice servers. With ESO a server may have like 1500 players or more. If the majority uses voice chat and it doesn't have a separate dedicated voice server. That is going to be very taxing bit wise on the console game servers that can barely hold 30fps in some single player games.
I ask about the alternate channels because I wouldn't like hearing more than 3-6 people at the same time, it would get annoying. Also if everyone is one or two channels, wouldn't that make things unstable?
I don't worry about what consoles do cause I am sticking with PC. Just wondering what is trying to be accomplished here. Even if ZoS changed their minds. It's not like they can add it in now and meet the launch day on time.
1. Consoles have their own voice chat servers.
- the technical answer I'm unsure of as each console handles this differently but the game voice chat works in the game similar to any other console online game. This one just has a lot more channels and options (applaud ZOS)
2. Proximity chat, group chat, guild chat, officer chat (then think about 2 within each guild)
The channels work very well with plenty of controls in place. But keep in mind a lot of people (on Xbox at least) use party chat over game chat due to the better options and we also have a dedicated party chat server option too
Do you have a console?

I dont understand who made you the console community president, Im on my console every god damn night and have never heard anyone say anything positive about the way Zenimax has butchered something so simple like the chat box. Im in a fps clan , and i am currently playing ffxiv on my ps4 , so from a "console gamer" perspective, hell no im not happy with what has happened to this game in transition to console. I wish i could play this on the pc but unfortunately my friends dont have gaming rigs to play, so we're forced to stay as a group on console.
Again like others have brought up, zone chat trading and money making, guild recruitments and chat, pvp zone chat and the obvious just plain ol talk to the randoms on zone chat just for fun. Cant believe thats so complicated to achieve lmao.
Anyway the radial quick chat is fine, it has its uses no doubt, but it shouldn't replace text chat as a whole, it only deals with those extremely close to you and looking in your direction.
And every option given for communicating so far has just been more complicated then having a chat box, suggestions of leaving the game to go to forums, a companion app to manage things, inviting a bunch of people into party chat, trying to mime what you want to say using emotes and quick chat.
All of this is harder and less intuitive then simply writing something in a text field
NewBlacksmurf wrote: »I believe the voice chat is what replaces the text chat box. The radial pre-set text seems to come from the chat bubbles request long ago for PC
EverQuest Online on the Playstation 2 had chats.
Pretty much anyone who was actually interested in the game had a keyboard.
Back then I had a wired USB keyboard with a 6' usb extension, now you can buy a cheap wireless keyboard for the price I paid for the kb and extension.
EverQuest Online Adventures lasted over 10 years with only one expansion and that came out within the first year.
A lot of players would log on just to chat with friends. My Wife and I made a bunch of friends in that game and a few we still talk to every so often.
Voice chat on Xbox live is so irritating, people screaming, complaining, heavy breathing, singing, talking smack and just plain trying to annoy everyone they could makes most people not even use it unless they are with real life friends and I have not made a friend on Xbox live in over a year since no one talks anymore.
Community is what makes a MMO last....even if chat is often filled with Chuck Norris jokes lol

First, thanks for digging this up. Yup, you read that right Smurf!!
Now, I knew...as you did...this was how they were implementing Quick Chat. This is really lame. Imagine this in town with 50 people standing around. Chat bubbles everywhere, overlapping each other. And only if you are turned in the correct direction to see these chat bubbles. Also, distance...if you are close enough.
Then you'll have those that just spam the largest phrase over and over trying to cover up others chat bubbles. Happened in wow, this is why it was short-lived. Turned it off quick.
And the phrases...really? That's what we are starting with? There are so many that never will get used. 'Tank the Boss'?? LOL if you have to select that during a fight, first...the tank isn't facing you to see that depending on the boss...and second, you're already dead if you are trying to get that quickchat off and getting into the view of the supposed tank.
It's just a poor alternative to a regular text chatbox. I'm done arguing that though.
Oh my...I just found the abuse of this system by console players in a certain age group....
I'm going to leave it to your imagination....but just use some of these quotes to form a chat bubble barrage.
I see the following possible combination of quick chats from the available options.
Hello. Get close. Spread out. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Good job. Goodbye. Self-congratulate.

This thread is about the radial text menu. The radial menu being presented still fails at pretty much everything for which text chat is needed: selling, grouping, custom lines of text, complex communication that doesn't involve mics.
What's especially irritating about your constant white-knighting is that you appear to suffer from the delusion that ZoS has done this "no text chat" thing as if its a "new age/ next-gen" design decision. Here in reality, around a month ago, ZoS REDACTED the information that had been previously posted that had informed us that text and typing--in all its permutations--was to be included in the console release. For a year, this was the plan for consoles, until something drastically changed in the last month. And it wasn't a sudden decision to "next-genify" the console ports. Surely, you can see that. Even though you have been harping on lately about how visionary this move has been (when its actually reactionary). It is obvious that ZoS just couldn't implement the chat feature in time (lol, since they had OVER A YEAR). Or, something else happened that prevented the implementation of chat within their release time-table. I repeat: It was never meant to be a 'feature' or exclusive console perk to NOT have text chat in the game. Please take a moment to really, truly process that information, since the evidence is staring you in the face and you continue to deny reality.
It is therefor, not "derailing" for myself and others to come into this thread and to point out that--yet again--the solution being proposed still fails for the purpose of communication. The range is too short. The communication lacks any depth. If they're using a radial menu it needs about 100X the options that it currently has. They're throwing in this last minute feature as a knee-jerk reaction to what they know will be a slew of reviewer and customer complaints. Period. Sticking your fingers in your ears anytime someone raises a logical counter-point on these issues, is in fact derailing, and exactly what you have been doing. The purpose of a forum for discussion is to hear all sides of an argument. Don't post something if you're only expecting accolades or people to agree with your viewpoint.

Your interpretation is interesting...have you watched why they didn't include it?
It's also derailing to come discuss something that has never been and that has nothing to do with the topic.
If you watched ZOS live you would follow why I'm saying this.
The radial chat is not there to replace any form of a text chat box. It's there to enhance or maybe bridge the voice chat
Use the radial chat as a form of flag waving communication.I just can't even imagine how guilds are supposed to work given these limitations. The console version is supposed to support guilds, right?
I've been wondering about that. I'm assuming you're supposed to invite them to a group or send them a XB/PSN message if they aren't standing right next to you for silly chat bubbles to show up.

The radial chat is not there to replace any form of a text chat box. It's there to enhance or maybe bridge the voice chat
It's there because they couldn't implement a working chat window or functionality before launch. My Lord, why the about face at the 11th hour if that wasn't the case? Chat was "in" for a whole year, then suddenly it wasn't. It's not my "interpretation", it's what actually happened. If you have a logical explanation as to why ZoS abruptly cancelled a feature that was touted since the beginning that doesn't line up with what I'm saying, please share it. The lack of a text communication has everything to do with why they included a radial menu, a NEW FEATURE NO ONE HAD EVER HEARD OF WEEKS BEFORE LAUNCH. ZoS only started talking about a radial chat feature after threads started popping up over the lack of text chat. The two issues are completely interlinked, despite your insistence that they are not.
I don't believe for a second the radial chat menus was added to "enhance voice chat". How does that enhance voice chat? Having a small number of canned phrases which actual voice or typing exceed in every way? I'm quite done responding to you since you have a complete inability to see reason. You just continue to revise history and spout the same jargon. You *might the wall of reality once the game launches and every publication under the sun declares that the communication systems in play are lacking. Have a great weekend.
P.S. I'm not happy when I'm right, which I will be about the blowback on this issue. I enjoy ESO and what people like you fail to see is that criticism is not always negative. Indeed, the best criticism and progress come from when the former is fair and the latter is implemented without hurt feelings. People aren't "bashing" ZoS, they're questioning the ludicrous decision-making that will send a game that they enjoy into the death-spiral that any seasoned consumer has seen a thousand times. Telling ZoS that everything is okay, when the sky actually is about to fall, is the worst thing to do.

Do you even play ESO? You have made quite a number of posts of World of Warcraft that aren't even representative of that game either, and keep trying to argue as though they are Elder Scrolls Online. This is what my screen looks like with over seventy (yes, 70 as in 7-0) addons installed because the default UI is so featureless (not minimalistic, just featureless):

I could, if I cared to, make the chat box fade out after 5, 10, or any other number of seconds I decided on of inactivity for an even cleaner screen, but I prefer being able to see things I missed while fighting or AFK a minute without having to pull it up manually, and the minimap can autohide and only show up if I press a key but again, preferences and options are good because what I like, others may not. We all saw how well it worked out removing the default UI stuff on PC (it didn't work, at all)... unfortunately console players won't be able to fix most of it with addons like we can on the PC, with there being new reaches of removing another staple online game feature, the chat box. Options are paramount: one size does not fit all. Stop minimizing the opinions and requests from people who want to play the game how they enjoy rather than just yours.

I think it's pretty clear that basic tools to socialize in an online game based on community is essential. A way to chat is one of those tools.

Perhaps... I don't think that's the actual reason on this UI omission, however. I'm guessing that, much like combat info on the PC, they simply really believe that taking out essential basics like the chat box and seeing how much health you have left or how hard you hit an enemy for, somehow enhances the gameplay's fun factor and socialization.

The only time I use text or email is when I cant speak or call....
text chat is an old communication method when oher technologies didnt exist
per zos, what makes sense on pc doesnt always make on console...they gave other logical reasons why it was not there

Hrm? This topic is exactly about communication methods in the console version of ESO. Speaking of staying on topic... why are you posting joke-meme pictures of people's World of Warcraft interfaces (the source ones you took, according to Tineye, were even made as parodies to an overdone extreme when I reverse image searched them) in a thread regarding text chat?
Let's get back on track :Attorneyatlawl wrote: »NewBlacksmurf wrote: »And then ppl for some reason want this for trading vs. a guild store....
And finally if ZOS listened to the PC crowd on how the console version should look....

I talk to people in real life....I email pl in real life, and text people
The only time I use text or email is when I cant speak or call....
text chat is an old communication method when oher technologies didnt exist
per zos, what makes sense on pc doesnt always make on console...they gave other logical reasons why it was not there
SSSOOOOOO what are your thoughts on radial article?
My thoughts on the radial text ???
It's worthless ... nothing more than a dozen or so extra "emotes" that does not address many of the issues brought on by the REMOVAL OF TEXT CHAT that we have agrued over on this & many other threads to ad nauseam.
The ONLY reason I can see why ZoS removed text chat for any logical reason was to combat a new wave a of gold sellers & if that is so, its the laziest, stupidest fraking reason in the world to do so. Not only can you ban game accounts for gold selling, you can ban the player tag & even the console, so cracking down on gold sellers would/will be much move effective on the consoles than the PC.

It's not what this thread is about and frankly...I'm leaving PC because of the constant refusal of ppl to use the games system and use zone chat to play the game like another game or to just bypass things they don't like or to do things they want to do that the game doesn't have a system for.
Please stay on topic or post as this is about the radial pre-set text bubble
I tried to be nice and keep suggesting but frankly ppl just want to talk about the same stuff.
