Would like to add. The last times it has happened I have seen textures thats a red box with white linings on them say missing. And soon after that the game crashes and says data load error.

I assume every is clicking 'debug' and sending in a crash report!
This is true, the "missing" red boxes were there but they didn't have an effect on the gameplay and in some cases, the missing object would eventually load. But after 1.2.3, I've noticed that I'll see a red box 90% of the time this happens. It does say "critical error (artdata)" which is why I think they're involved. And the boxes never load into what they're supposed to be.
Is there anywhere one could go that has a known missing texture or artwork for the missing boxes? Perhaps some of us could check to see if we have the same Data Load Error at that location.

In fact, I had one "data load error (artdata") when the camera actually went behind a wall hanging which covered the entire screen at the point of the crash. Other crashes happen when simply wandering about the world, doing nothing special whatsoever .. there'll be no warning, no odd graphics effects, just a freeze and when I ALT-TAB I find the "data load error" dialog.
