ZOS, Massive Spike in Ping/LAG in Recent Days - What Gives?

crazy lag freezes tonight. like few seconds at a time. got disconnected, and in queue. queue doesnt move down, or still cannot obtain server connection information.

seems like mass disconnects, and cant get back on.

more resources need to be invested into instance servers when events where people are spawning new instances for dungeons for undaunted events, and finishing them quickly...

We are working on getting an update from the team. Hoping to have something this week. No change from my last update as of right now, so nothing new to report at the moment.

Also, please do not derail other threads looking for updates. We understand this is frustrating, but all that does is make it disruptive for other people.

How long can it possibly take to "get an update"? Either there is information on the issue or you just aren't doing your jobs. Which is it? And you may think you understand the frustrations, but if you did...SOMETHING would have been done by now.

check my signature, your company's 'poor' communication isn't anything new. This type of performance issue isn't anything new. When is ZOS going "git gud'?

Xbox na, have had Intermittent game freezing all night and just disconnected three times in three minutes in lucent citadel.

And disconnected again. I'm done for the night.

What I don't understand is every time there is an event game performance suffers. Surely the servers should be designed to cope with a healthy population. Otherwise what level of traffic and popularity are they content to have for this game? Is the optimal amount of traffic relatively low, with most people hanging around the new zone. Do we need to huddle around crafting hubs and hope we don't stress the servers out?

Reposting from bug report for visibility:
Cancelled raid because of this. 2k+ ping, 5s~ lag spikes, d/c's to supports. Already robbed 36/36 (we had 5 d/c's and ran out of time, then people got 5s+ lag spike in Ansuul execute and led to a death lol).

Also certain accounts would get plagued with d/c's regardless.

This is 12 people's raiding experience being ruined for several weeks on end. Raiding requires scheduling beforehand and for all of us to set aside our time, this is making users lose the will to play. Please make this a high priority fix.

Nah, you just arent hardcore enough! ESO has a new Trial Harder Hard+ mode, that automatically checks itself when you are doing really well, no need to hit flags/read scrolls! Random party member will be removed from instance every 47.6 seconds, forcing the rest of the team to try harder and compensate for the random party member missing!

Isnt that fun and exciting!? Definitely not an inconvenience to have weekly/monthly raid sign ups and bench lists and comp groups, wait for the tanks cat to stop being on fire and the healers lasagna to be done, only to have ZOS decide some of you arent allowed to play! I love it!

I think ZOS really hit it home with this update, the past 4 months with this new feature has brought about so much community interaction that they have even had to ask us to contain our enthusiasm on talking about it elsewhere! truly stellar game update, raging success!

seriously though the poo people are dealing with trying to play this game that they paid for/subbed to/overpaid for crowns for/supported by being a part of the community whether its trials, dungeons, pvp, flower picking, afk'ing (i really like the afk community), is absolutely ridiculous. Gem of a game, its why people are so vocal about their frustrations, but the game is tainted by detestable performance and support.

PS NA, I sure hope our incremental patch tomorrow does something to help because it is getting progressively worse.

I was tanking vKA Sunday night and in the second add pull, my entire screen froze. PSN party chat worked just fine, so I was able to tell everyone I was gonna have to close app and relaunch. Thankfully, the rest of the trial went fine.

Last night was an absolute JOKE the whole night. Did Undaunted pledges with three friends. In vWGT, the lag was insufferable. Had to hit skills multiple times and they'd choose to maybe go off or not, rubberbanding type moments where everything else would freeze around you and you think you're about to get disconnected, then suddenly the scene starts working again. Each of us was experiencing that in particular, at one point two of us had the same lag-then-catch-up moment at the same time. Prior to this, one of my friends had been in vFL and that group experienced the same thing.

And now it's even non-combat stuff. After doing the pledges, I left to go shop at traders and place trader bids. I get to the third trader in a city, hit X to talk to them, nothing happened. Click X again, nothing happened. X, nothing. Great, am I about to disconnect? Log out. Log back in. Click X to interact and finally the trader talks to me.

This is not my Internet, folks. Or else we are all experiencing the same mass hallucinations at the same time...

I decided to just do a few survey's today to see how things are. You can see by the BIG RED 999+ they are NOT going well. I have been here less than FIVE MINUTES and this is what I am dealing with trying to do ONE survey!!! I had to hit the E key so many times to get a response from the game as the latency was all over the place.

It's this simple, if you won't deal with the issues then I simply need to remove myself from the game, totally. I have spent the last 1 1/2 weeks logging in to get mail and not playing due to what you see below.

Again, I know I am one person so who cares if I stay or go. I feel the love every day I see the big red 999+ on my screen.

Maybe I should yell out the window at the Data Center and ask if they can jiggle the wires or something?

Massive lag in a dungeon I did this morning. It wasn't just me, but the whole group was experiencing it. At one point, we thought we were going to be disconnected. Fortunately we made it through.

Performance is getting bad on a global scale (both PVE and PVP). I didn't even PVP today and I still ended up getting kicked a few times, including one time when I was just sitting at my house AFK (and not a fully decorated house too!). I got stuck in a login q for a while too.

Later in the evening while doing a vet dungeon, the game would just stall, and then suddenly rebound a few second later, I tried to link an item to see if a teammate needed it at the end of the dungeon, only to have it delayed by 5 minutes.

Overall, server performance has been extremely poor and I'm not sure what to point the finger at.

    This is Xbox NA.

Has anyone else been running Task Manager and seen ESO using 100% of the CPU/Very High usage most of the time -- even when you are idle in game?
Does anyone know why this would be happening?

My guild ran nAA last night, the whole group froze three times for about 15 seconds and then everything fired off at once. that's not all 12 people from around the world's internet connection, that's not all 12 people's computer having something wrong. I think what frustrates me most is we have the typical silence from ZOS on this, this has been progressing worse and worse with words of hope it might ever be fixed.

I run a resource monitor ALL the time while playing. When the issues hit my overall cpu usage normally DROPS. ESO can't push my proccessor over 60% utilization...gpu maxes around 45% in this game. I'll see a few cores tap 100% for a few seconds from time to time, but not long enough to account for the game issues. When I have issues nothing is hitting 100%.

Yeah when this 999+ and lag mess started support said my system was most likely the problem and couldn't handle the game. So I sent them this:

    System Specs:

CPU: intel i9-13900K with EKWB LGA 1700 ILM Replacement Kit
    Motherboard: MSI Pro Z790-A WiFi
GPU: Asus GeForce RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC 24G
    RAM: 64GB Corsair Dominator DDR5-6000 CL30
Hard Drive: (2) Samsung 990 Pro NVMe, 1TB and 2TB
    Operating System: Windows 10
    Case: Lian Li V3000 Plus

    Cooling

    (3) Loops
    CPU: EK Quantum Velocity² Nickel/Plexi
GPU: OptimusPC Signature V2 4090 GPU Block
NVMe Cards: AlphaCool HDX Apex Acrylic aRGB blocks

So now I am just ignored. Kind of like the fact I could yell at the Data Center guys if I wanted to from my window. :)

It's clearly not an individual's setup, because I will be running with 3 friends from this region of northern California, and our lags will ALL go to 999+ at the same instant, and all go back to normal at the same instant a minute or so later.

its definitely a server side issue. If i were to guess, it's probably creation and destruction of instances(people doing fg1 for event boxes) that is probably just killing performance for other instanced servers like trials.

They need to allocate more resources, or use some of that $2b revenue they earned from sales and crowns and put it towards more capacity(i would say all the time, but during events at the bare minimum).

Remember the time they updated the server hardware from 2012 hardware to 2022 hardware and said there would not be any noticable in game performance gains, but surprise, it resolved a ton of the issues in cyrodil, after the hardware refresh was complete.

They need to continue to invest in this game, and not just milk the crown store, and not spend resources because things will deteriorate over time, especially if the population is increasing(new players hopefully, but its most noticable during events).

Agreed. I do like how they said something like hey don't expect performance increases (anyone who knows anything about servers/IT side of the house knows there would be a boost) but they managed expectations.

Logging in and playing after that was so much fun. Zone chat was wild "OMG THE LAG IS GONE!!!". Fights were epic.

It's been all down hill since a few months after that refresh.

PCNA’s been really bumpy since the patch yesterday.

I’m guessing a lot of it is new instances for dungeons being spun up for the event, but we were having issues last night and even this morning with random ping spikes as we were going along. I know there were times where a number of my friends all ‘logged off’ at once, which tells me a wave of people got booted simultaneously.

My game’s normally pretty smooth, but I have noticed that the intermittent ping spikes have started a few weeks ago, and now they’re pretty obvious since yesterday’s patch.

Yup, it affects our raid group with a wide variety of setups. Lag spikes would always come in sets of members, if not the whole group. Some run minimum addons while I usually run everything and I don't d/c as often. There is no one in our group who is immune to the issues, and they also experienced the same of their other groups. So that's at least 30+ players in my immediate circles who are dealing with this issue.

I've made the decision to not buy ESO plus again after a year or two ago, after months of long unfixed bugs, and this decision continues to stand.

Given chat is and has always been logged and saved somewhere, they don't have to AI monitor live. They can monitor the logs instead and probably do, which shouldn't have an impact on live servers.

Possibly, but depending on where that "service" or "resource" is managed... it could be on the same vm and contributing even if it's not on same instance.

Ex. 10 services running on the same vm is going to have some cross service impacts.
