ZOS, Massive Spike in Ping/LAG in Recent Days - What Gives?

    This is NOT an Internet Provider problem, as the disconnects ate triggered by re-zoning or initial zone loading (otherwise them disconnects happen at random times), but, apparently this is the server software issue.
    Not a new one, unfortunately.
    My Internet connection is OK as well as other MMOs.

    How do you launch ESO? (Directly, Steam, Epic?)

    A few different symptoms.
    1. Touch movement key, freeze for 3-5 seconds. Repeats for about a minute then ok for awhile.
    2. Touch skill fires in just over 2 seconds. This one can last for quite a while.
    3. Both together usually results in a disconnect.
    4. Several people in group affected at same time but not all. During group when coming out of freeze players and non players skip a few meters. You can see it happen. My trials are usually folks from Midwest and pacific coast as well as Australia.

    I have an elderly W10 machine
    I launch 2 Acounts directly
    I launch the 3rd account through Epic.
    My machine is hard wired with a modern cable
    I have 32gb ddr4 ram
    I can run all three accounts at the same time using the windowed setting, two seems to function fine, 3 my PC does struggle.
    Usually running multiple accounts is for crafting reasons and/or making short videos, for example recently I made a video of three very similar looking characters in one of my houses synchronised dancing..... just because it was fun to try and do!
    Recently I have been doing more content than usually, quite a bit in IC, some in Cyrodiil and all of the Halloween Golden Skulls everyday.
    I play on PC-EU
    I have no noticable issues
    DC's are beyond rare.
    I connect from London Uk
    My ISP is Virgin Media.

    I know this doesn't help those of you who are having issues BUT maybe a tech might look and see something that might help them rule out some potential issues.

    Edit to add one account has Gold Road and uses scribed skills which seem to work fine and cause no issues!

    I wonder what sort of OS the PS users have.... Not literally.
    Is it PS5? PS4? Does it run more like Windows 11 or Windows 10, figuratively. Some resemblance or semblance....
    Perhaps a certain portion of those OS is complicating direct launch, meanwhile older OS seem to work fine.
    If people are having problems on a PS5, and have a spare PS4, try downloading to the PS4 and see if it works.
    Windows 11 users who have a spare Windows 10, copy to a drive and then copy to the machine, and see if it works better.
    This is just a theory, and it needs testing.
    Please don't spend money on getting older machines, it might not work.
    Don't blame me if you do buy older machines and it still doesn't work.

    How many people here do have spare machines they can try? Or have tried?

    Yeah, for sure. They should know by now (especially after U35's reception) that those kinds of responses aren't going to land well. I'm not asking my questions for them to be ignored and "responded" with something other than a direct answer. Maybe it needs to be said, but not answering a question is ignoring it, regardless if it's been seen or not. It takes 20 minutes to search this thread and find some key questions. If they can't answer questions for legal reasons, then just be transparent about it.

    Is it PS5? PS4? Does it run more like Windows 11 or Windows 10, figuratively. Some resemblance or semblance....
    Perhaps a certain portion of those OS is complicating direct launch, meanwhile older OS seem to work fine.
    If people are having problems on a PS5, and have a spare PS4, try downloading to the PS4 and see if it works.

    i tried my old pc not too long ago and it was still bad.

    What you are trying to do is to derail the thread.

    With all symptoms the problem is SERVER based (or balancer based, or Akamai based)
    My disconnects are triggered by one certain action - loading my character into a zone
    be that teleporting or initial character login.

    if you are THAT curious - yes i have 2 desktops, both seriously exceeding Zenimax recommended client hardware.
    And both experience disconnects at PC/NA while re-zoning.
    I also have a spare server, which is PC/EU, which sometimes shows some noticeable amount of lags (playing in big groups or in Cyrodiil), but it does not freeze for 2..5 seconds and does not disconnect me on login or teleport.

    Shifting focus onto client configuration you want to divert attention from server (which is, most likely, the cause) to players devices, at this will cause dozen of pages of non-constructive discussion, because players configurations are vastly different, but the issues we experience are quite similar. And, basically the game is to run smoothly on the most of diverse players computers, isn't it?

    I could understand if such client configuration questions were raised by Zenimax employee,
    or if based on our responses you would suggest the 100% working configuration which resolves players Error 303 issues,
    still, none of that.

    You are simply diverting attention from the real issues, i don't know for what reasons.

    I think I have to try to play again after a long time on NA server.
    I stopped just because of a lot of problems with lags and non-functioning abilities.

    I've had the experience of having ability lags in ESO where simply the ability wouldn't fire, the lightning staff wouldn't fire either (some LA and most of HA). Everything else like other MMOs and stuff worked fine. Only ESO had a problem.
    I thought it was a problem with either the game or my ISP. I had a router from Asus RT-AC58U V2 (when the wife made pars on dummy unplayable for both, disconnects) and from Tenda AC-10 (ability lags and occasional disconnects but playable pars or trials together), so for the needs of my own big home network (little nerd home so) I was looking for a better router and went the route of an expensive Mikrotik. All the problems with the ESO disappeared. Even loading screen are shorter.
    I honestly don't fully understand it, anyway I'm playing on an EU server where everything works miraculously.
    Anyway my devices can't be compared to each other, I still have to try traceroute to NA and EU servers and try to play on NA server.

    I remember reading a thread where someone discovered that a specific combination of their router model and the region they were playing from led to problems. However, this has nothing to do with the quality of the router; simply buying a "better" router won't solve the issue, and buying routers until one pleases Akamai is not a solution to the problem.

    Of course, it's not a solution to buy a "better" router. As I wrote, I don't really understand what happened. Anyway, more routing throughput plays a bigger role when there are multiple players in the home at once. And if maybe I was "lucky" enough to get that specific combination, then all the better for me that I'm enjoying the Akamai network with my mikrotik. But I didn't buy it for ESO, I bought it for my home network :smile: (now I have everything I wanted at home)

    I have both a PS4 and a PS5 at my desk. I launch up my PS4 to run my alt account occasionally, to trade items between accounts, to reset an instance, to share quests, etc.
    The game is damn near unplayable on my PS4 any more. Like, if I try to rezone, I can go into the kitchen, get some coffee, come back and I'm still in a loading screen. For literal minutes. If I approach the crafting area in Vivec City on my PS4, every other player is often a black outline for 30 seconds after I load in. The addition of all the new particle effects has been awful on a PS4 (but that's a different discussion). If I actually want to play on my alt account, I do it on the PS5.

    My friends who are still on PS4s are having all the same issues as those mentioned in this thread. Getting kicked from trials, insane lag, rubber banding, enemies in trials not loading in visually but still killing them (That one is especially frustrating. Tough to tank something you can't see.), etc.

    I agree with the others that this question is a diversion. The problem isn't client side (with an occasional exception, like the VSYNC one mentioned last page).

    Since this problem is occurring on each platform and in each region, it is natural to assume that the problem is on the ESO side. Of course, ESO's server and network engineers are aware of the problem and have reported it to management.
    Why has this important issue been ignored for 7 months? We don't know what ZoS is doing, even though they try to make it look like they are doing their job. They can honestly say that it's been put off because of lack of budget or that it's Microsoft's fault.
    Well, you can't say that to ZoS. I would support ZoS to the best of my ability if I honestly made such a statement, even though it would be a very small effort.

    What is that survey that the ZoS side advocated? It's too ugly. How are we going to database it afterwards, how are we going to present it to the developers?

    I’ve honestly given up hope that the performance will ever improve and haven’t logged in for almost two weeks. At this point, it’s going to be hard for me to log in for a while. Every bit of enjoyment I used to get from ESO has all but disappeared.

    This is just a theory, and it needs testing.
    Please don't spend money on getting older machines, it might not work.
    Don't blame me if you do buy older machines and it still doesn't work.

    How many people here do have spare machines they can try? Or have tried?

    i tried my old pc not too long ago and it was still bad.

    Super laggy in bg today. Getting stuck in ambush pooping position. Melee skill firing on targets that are now off screen. Breakfree and dodge roll are pointless.
    Here $15, goat mount please. Not gambling or paying 45 : lol :
    20% base speed for high ping players.
    Streak moves you faster then speed cap.
    They should of made 4v4v4v4 instead of 8v8.

    I thought usually BGs are fine in performance. Is 8v8 introducing Cyrodiil-like issues?

    Im on console so haven’t got a chance to experience it yet.

    Currently, the combat bugs in BG are even more noticeable than in other locations due to the high density of fights. Now all the issues with breakfree and roll dodge, unresponsive skills, and registration failures have just become part of the routine in BG. But that’s not all – I've been chasing running corpses multiple times now. And I still don’t know what the exact bug is: whether it was a corpse that the server moved for some unknown reason, or if there was no corpse at all and the server sent the wrong status for a player running around the arena.

    Yup. Been monitoring a few discords I'm in and the overall vibe is that it's been too laggy to play for way to long so most trial groups are disbanding.

    (Serious question. Not a term I've heard in this context before.)

    Well, I used to call this a 'registration failure' because I got used to considering situations where effects don’t apply for some reason, or where damage doesn’t go through, as 'unreg' (from playing shooters). I understand that here it’s more often called 'desync,' pointing directly to the reason why it happens, although in reality, 'unreg' can have different causes. That’s why, out of habit, I just refer to the visible fact on my screen rather than trying to indicate a possible cause for the effect. A moving dead body is also a kind of desync, but I’m not sure between what and what.

    I’m not referring to any new effects under 'registration failures'; it’s all the same issues like abilities not activating in the moment only to all trigger at once a few seconds later, damage not going through when visually it seems like it should, or, on the contrary, damage going through when visually it shouldn’t. And many other things that I’ve already seen people describe here on the forum.

    Trial boss fights became completely unplayable 2 update before, waited a little after last update, tried again today... Nope, trials where I completed trifecta before still give me 1-5 fps and 500+ ping

    Since I only ran trials over last year, the game is basically not working at all for me, except for daily logins

    Well, at least you have that going for you. Half of the time my game hangs up on the first loading screen before the character select screen even shows up, "Elder Scrolls Online (not responding)." I have to force close it, then I get the new nag popup on the launcher, something about my 'bad files,' but then the second time I click PLAY, I always get in to the character select screen. I'm guessing it has something to do with ESO messing with my Windows explorer.exe file, and then when it finishes altering it, it's good to go on the second pass.
