A Sad Truth

CALLING IT: ESO is Dead

I reported a little while back that we would give ESO yet another try. We did. After logging in, I struggled to find a single player actually doing anything out in the world of ESO. I then jumped into a PVP server to see it completely one-factioned with no one in the server and switched to another. This time, I see another faction has completely taken over that server and switched once more (to guest) and I see the exact same thing with yet another faction.

At this point I knew PVP was officially dead, there was no resurrecting it beyond the few dudes that like running around and measuring their e-pens and the fact that I saw absolutely no one in the newer zones, I gave up and logged off.

At E3, Tamriel Unlimited announced that they are “unlocking” and removing nearly all faction limitations and requirements and only limiting players from visiting Coldharbour until after they reach that part of the quest line. This was my confirmation that my experience wasn’t just anecdotal. When Zenimax has to open the gates so the segments of players that are left can see each other to prevent it from feeling like an empty game, while there are only 3 segments, the game is officially dead.

Sure, they’ll keep right on running the servers for a bit, hopefully, they can nab, into Zenimax’s pay to win scheme, a few more returning, and curious veterans. But this all leads to one inevitable and immediate fate. The servers will soon be turned off.

(Google Trends info below, Google Trends is pretty much NEVER wrong just an FYI but its pooled data from BILLIONS of people world wide. Google is literally the consciousness of the world and what their interests are)

ESO.jpg

This graph shows just ESO interest on Google Search. While we can argue that we’re only talking about one search engine, while they have the dominant share of the search market, we’re safer using them as an accurate sample. But pay attention to this, you see 2 distinct spikes of activity. The first spike was a very steady-rising spike, you can see when the game went beta from the first peek, then released on the second peek and you can see the first patch on the second peak, the third peak wasn’t an interest “rise” it was a failure, that is when the community manager told everyone on the forums there was nothing they could do about exploiters because it was a “TOS Grey Area”. Look at how hard that fell.

The second peek is very obvious, it was the announcement of Free-to-Play, but again, look at how fast that died. They are looking at pre-beta number as a player-base right now and telling everyone, “everything is fine”. It couldn’t be further from the truth.

But how do I know this? Well, experience.

eso2.jpg

A few games are listed on this one, but EQ is the one you should really study closer there. You can see when EQ2 released, of course, the 2005 spike is the marketing of that game. But something else also happened in 2005 that is interesting, the “Station Cash” shop was added. And what do you see? A steep decline, and even steeper when they added that shop cross-game for every SOE game but Vanguard.

But look at World of Warcraft in the same example. There is a very regular rhythm here: when a game is failing, the answer they want to use is “Pay to Win” or “Free to Play” from which, there is no coming back from. But you can see very clearly that neither model has ever helped any of these mainstream MMOs.

The difference between EQ/WOW and ESO is that these games had a running start before diving off the deep end, which has helped them keep the doors open just a little longer. ESO had no such running start, it was not a 10-year-old game with 20% of its fanbase that didn’t give a rats ass if the devs pissed on their heads and told them it was raining — No, what happened was this did happen in ESO and the fans told them to suck egg.

So what’s next for ESO? Well, the servers will eventually be turned off, that is to be expected. Because of this massive loss, as I can’t imagine they’ve finished paying their debt to develop the game, I don’t think we’ll see another big title from Bethesda for quite some time. This will be something that will take some accounting magic to wiggle out of; though, thanfully they did form Zenimax as a severable company so they could cut that limb of the company off if the debt got too much to handle.

In short, I wouldn’t advise buying Beth or Zeni stock any time soon.

PS: just to add some further proof

You can see shortly after Imperial City release(Jun 2015) the Google Trends shows the games interest tanking right down the drain with a HUGE nose dive of interest on Google trends. Its also around this time sites like ESOhead and ESOstats were abandoned. It also shows barely any interest spikes at all after Orsinium, Thieves Guild, Dark Brotherhood, and Shadow of the Hist DLC's

trends1.png

the 2nd image shows you the Google trends, but also compared to Skyrim. Right after Skyrim SE was released you saw a HUGE influx of Skyrim interest in the Google Trends for the new edition, BUT in time Skyrim interest went back to its orginal middle of the road populatiry ratings right around the 40-50 ballpark while ESO has had two very short big spikes followed by rock bottom plunges.

trends2.png

This explains why they changed the ESO Morrowind from being included in the ESO Plus to having to be bought. Google Trends say they are losing money if Worldwide interest is to be believed. I am very big facts statistics guys...the Statsitics say ESO is dead or just barely hanging on with life support, and this explains why they have changed their content cadence model(having to pay for content that was included in the sub price before)

According to Google Trends, being a prophet, the future does not bode well for ESO longterm. I think they try to make back their 200 million dollar investment + other expenses,

There is a reason ESO PVP results in a few one colored maps, and at primetime the most populated server has 1 fight going on in one place and the rest of the map empty. Jules, Kodi, etc play horse simulator for 5-10 minutes riding around to find someone to fight.

One Tamriel was put into the game soley to prevent the zones from looking empty...prior to One Tamriel most of the zones were literally empty on PC-NA.

As Malagant told King Arthur at the end of First Knight: " the Great King Arthur of Camelot, he is a man waking up from a dream"

Google trends doesn't lie....ESO is dying sadly.

I myself will continue to play the game on and off until they shut it off, but i'll cherish my time as I would cherish the time spent with someone with a terminal illness. Morrowind reeks of desperation and an attempt to get enough money to buy more time. will work? Who knows.

there is ONE thing we do know....the Fate of Zenimax Media, and the Fate of the company, and the Fate of TEs lies with Todd Howard. It lies with Bethesda. The two new IP Howard is working on(about the size of Fallout4 if what he says is true) will determine the future of Zenimax and Bethesda, if those two games are successful, then it will be up to Howard to pull TES series from the brink....he has some pretty large tasks ahead of him, but with so many successes, I understand why Howard wants a lot of new technology to bring to bear...he is again going to be forced to change the way RPG are made and played out of necessity, much like he did back when he really put Bethesda on the map in the 90's.

Agree or disagree....the stats don't paint a pretty picture for ESO, and Google knows EVERYTHING about every thought in the world....because we search for our thoughts....no getting away from it....if people are not searching for ESO, they are not thinking about ESO, thus they are not interested in it nor playing it as much as we all think.

Everyone says ESO is doing well, but Google says otherwise...who do we believe? Google who has invested hundreds of Billions of Dollars in R&D to track and scope trends? or do we believe forum and players who really have no hard based facts to base their assertions on?

Lets hope for Morrowind's sake that the expansions can maybe help turn things around for ESO, because if it can't...it will be up to Howard to rescue TES as an IP. ESO may continue to limp on for awhile, but it won't ever reach what it could have been. Until then, i'll enjoy my time here, and the fun aspects the game has.

Good day.

There are lies, damned lies, and statistics, I think the quote goes..... :)

And I don't know what server the person is playing on as find sometimes there are too many people questing where I am and it's annoying.

Also, why does it seem there are people who just love to be fecking smugly negative about things? Bet they're a right laugh at parties.

Yeah, the game seems very populated to me. It's rare that I'll go into a delve or public dungeon and not find anyone else, and I've been going around to every zone to collect skyshards.

Ultimately, you can't say whether or not there's a correlation between google searches and number of players playing. It sounds logical, but there are just too many assumptions being made for it to count as actual evidence to support your claim.

Even if there is a correlation, those stats are deceptive. If it's just the number of players googling "The Elder Scrolls Online", then of course the numbers are going to be low. Who doesn't type "ESO" when talking about the game? Would that register in the above graph? There's also all the resource sites, like the wiki and tamriel foundry, which also wouldn't be displayed above. Most active players aren't just gonna be searching "the elder scrolls online" lol

The google charts match up with exactly what they have said in eso lives. And why they are going in the direction they are.

They see burst play right around when something comes out then a steep drop off until the next new thing. So they are designing content around that. It isn't a lie or a trick. It is exactly what they said.

Having said that, that doesn't have to make a game dead. So labeling such might be a little overkill.

This is a June 2016 article. Much died. Very sad. Also,

"In short, I wouldn’t advise buying Beth or Zeni stock any time soon."

Bethesda is owned by ZeniMax, which is not a publicly traded company.

I just don't see the point in ranting with numbers if you're just going to torpedo your credibility in the last sentence...

I only got thru the second paragraph before I decided the writer is talking thru the opening not on top of his body.

I am back from a hiatus and see hundreds of people in starter zones.
I see zerg after zerg in Azura's Star and Haderus NA. In no way is that empty.

Then, I realized you are linking a crappy article from June of 2016. Lots has happened since then. Are you looking to up your epeen with a year old article OP?

Then you should be freaking out. Because they dont.. it's just retextured content. Even housing was a copy paste of existing structures in the game. The content they are currently realeasin was made 2 years ago. The just never released it. So yes, you should be concerned. We all should.

Google trends might not lie but they also do not distinguish between those who play the game and those who saw an ad for the game and checked it out.

The spikes are closely related to when trailers were released. Instead of showing the demise of the game they show the effectiveness of gaining awareness through an ad campaign.

For that data to be significant at all the numbers need to be separated by those who play the game and those who do not. As is the graphs just show Zenimax was able to put out an effective ad campaign.

What time of day did you log in? What day of the week was it? What Cyro server did you visit? What zones did you go to? I can tell you exactly when/where to find people/action if that is what you were looking for. It’s changed a lot since ya’ll left.

Chip Patton June 18, 2016 at 3:39 am
Hi Lilly! Long time, no see!

This was about 19 days after the game went F2P. We were logged in and tried 3 or 4 PVP servers at about 5pm EST (GMT -5). They were empty, PVE was also empty.

    Lilly June 18, 2016 at 5:53 am
    Hey.
Yeah, the game is very different now. There is 1 PVP server that is active 24/7, 1 that is non-vet (not sure, never go there), 1 that is Non-CP (also don’t go there) and another open one that is usually active on weekends. The PVP community is WAY smaller than when you guys left, crazy small actually but still active if you know where to go.

As for PVE. You gotta be in the right zone to find the PVE peeps or in guilds. Most of my PVE is done via guild so I never notice a lack of players.

If you want crazy activity try 3-5 hours after 5pm (7am my time and it feels like Oceanic prime time, kinda quiet).
If ya’s did log in again I’m around.

Chip Patton June 19, 2016 at 5:46 am
Will do, for now, we’re staying pretty busy in a new game, we’re picking up new members and have quite a popular server there with some lively pvp.

I've been pretty frustrated with ESO lately, but using an article from over a year ago is utterly ridiculous.

Now do google pick up eso centered pages including the ones who is multi game like the eso fashion.
On general gaming forums eso reputation has been raising over the time
In part one of the main issues with the morrowind nerf, it adds a lot of negativity from the eso players.

if you actually "read" you would see the two photos at the very bottom of the post are the Google Trends all the way up to May of 2017 which is current which shows ZERO change from the orginal article whihc proves the point.

Furthermore, searches for ESO are actually worse then The Elder Scrolls Online, showing the same exact nosedive after Imperial City release(June of 2015)
