It was more popular until the drop rate on Perfect Roe was uber-nerfed from 1 in 100 fillets to 1 in 200 on average.

It's boring with little reward. I wish they made fishing require more skill rather than pushing one button. I would love to see fishing turn into somewhat of a mini game that allowed players to upgrade poles and lines. Also the ability to actually see a fish and mount it in your house would be cool.

I think this is one of the reasons. I enjoy fishing, but after a while trying to get a certain fish it really gets frustrating.

When you have a friend to fish with you, it is better.

Also, if we had a different setting for reeling in that isn't the same as interacting with the environment, I would map a mouse button to it so I would be able to quickly stop talking with people on chat and reel in even if I was typing a longer message.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I find fishing fun in short bursts, but over all it is boring, and lack luster and not many reasons to fish, perfect roe and titles, I guess, not exciting fish that might pop up and beat you down or something, some night when I have insomnia I log on and fish or gather resources in about an hour or less insomnia cured :)

It's not popular because you don't get much out of it. You get:

*Fish, a single provisioning component for select recipes that you probably don't even use.
*Perfect roe, which is uber rare and again only used in a couple of recipes and is likely the only real reason people go fishing.
*Vendor trash, as in it's specifically there to be sold to a vendor.
*Wet gunny sacks, which contain an incredibly easy to obtain crafting component that you've probably been tossing on the ground because you already have several stacks of them, if you collect it at all.

Oh, and an achievement for collecting all the types of vendor trash in each zone.

    Not a particularly rewarding experience.

The 2 reasons to fish are (1) perfect roe and (2) the achievements/title.

    (1) the drop rate of perfect roe is too low, imo, for it to be a good way to make gold so people won't buy bait to fish for perfect roe.

    (2) most people that would go for the title at a faster rate than they pick up bait themselves probably have the title by now so that market has gone.

The only way people would consider buying bait to fish would be if the selling price of the green/blue fish was significantly increased and/or the drop rate for perfect roe was increased. I'm not even sure either of those would work as fishing is quite boring - press a button to cast; wait; press a button to reel in; repeat - it would have to be a lot more profitable than the alternative ways of making gold to get enough people to do it to make a market for bait.

I wish it gave experience. I would say I understand why it doesn't, but I don't. If the reasoning was it's not combat I could understand except lockpicking gives experience. You could say there is no real skill involved, but the time is a big factor. People under the CP cap(or at least me when I was under the cap) feel pressured to earn their CP first, so fishing tends to become a retirement activity.

I also wish it wasn't so... monotonous. Give me some other methods... Give me a skill line... Allow me to craft a net, set fish traps... Make my own jigs... For the love of god allow me to fly fish.

Or keep it as is, because putting all that into the game would distract from better use of dev time.

Yeah a few things could make it better.

Sunken chests (different rarity) - White = simple chest etc... They could basically act like usual open world chests with a chance to get zone appropiate gear from them.

Lost lockboxes - Again different tiers , have gold in, treasure maps , lockpics, higher chance of getting rare motif's?

Gold tier fish - Every fishing spot has a chance to catch a gold tier fish which has 2 perfect roe in? Make it like a 1 in 300 chance or something to catch it.

Chance to pull up some alchemy mats such a nirnroot or water hyciath when you get a fish.

    Just a few things.

Applying your signature logic, the responsibility of your bait selling falls mostly on you. If it's not selling at the price you're asking, drop the price. Ignore the Master Merchant average and look at what most people are buying at per unit. Then price it to be competitive with that number. If everybody's selling at 100g per unit, you will sell more every time simply by pricing at somewhere between 78g and 88g.

If you're selling one rare item, undercutting will hurt you. But with renewable resources, discounts really are your best selling tool.

Simple its the single most boring fishing aspect I've ever seen in an mmorpg... now for instance a game I played ages ago mabinogi had an entire fishing skill line and a fish journal with pictures weight and lengths of the fish and over 100+ fish to catch. as well as fish pulled from the water had a full living model not the same generic reused icon in bag and when filleting they aren't all salmon. Made the excitement of seeing a huge fish worth it like look "omg guys caught a 7 foot tuna holy crap ! And all can see it"!as well as it had peices of gear and even an entire armor set crafted from shellfish carapaces making it cool to fish. the minigame was also good and it had an auto fish mode where the character would 50/50 chance auto catch or miss the catch making afk fishing a little profitable vs Chinese gold farm easy. Next we had to reel in the fish the larger and rarer the fish the harder it was to do as well as we had multiple kinds of rods for different fish and different baits.

Now eso I cringe at how long they wait between fish bites and bored to death its bland and a waste of time even a 20k roe doesn't justofy the boredom

It is so boring and the rewards are not equal to the time invested you get what: fish and the chance for roe which is next to useless if you are maxed out perhaps some rubbish and trophies with no use at all. If it provided like a unique and decent set piece or can lead to unique fights (think MH3 all versions besides PSP) then perhaps fishing would be more popular.

I've done some fishing as a quest objective for the New Life Festival. But before that nope, haven't even fished once. To be honest I find it dull. Why save a town or the leader of a faction, or craft a legendary sword when you can go...fishing. No thank you. And as far as I know it's not very rewarding, more of a thing to do if you're bored.

To make fishing more interesting, they could...

--Add some way to craft fishing lures to target a specific rare fish (So take, say, 1 Salmon Roe + 1 Worms + 1 Jute to craft a 'tadpole' lure which would increase the odds you'd catch a Muskie in Auridon, while 1 Chub + 1 Insect Parts + 1 Jute would make a 'flying fish' lure that increases the odds of catching a Bristlemouth. Lures for blue fish take slightly more mats).
--Add a Motif as a random drop, because hey, we have to grind for them with every OTHER activity in the game. I'm going to say Dreughshell, since they're aquatic and it was in Morrowind so why not?
--Have some way to speed up casting. Tap left-left-up to make Ocean fish bite faster, to mimic real fishing where you'll reel in the bait in different ways to make your lure look 'alive'
--Also give us something to do with the raw fish fillets besides cooking. Let up trade them in for the aforementioned Dreughshell Motif stones maybe.
--Have some quests unlock after you've caught, say, 100 fish.

You could probably add a teeny, tiny chance to reel up some vMA-rivaling superweapon, but that's just cruel. :P
