Game is too difficult, dying all the time...

Hello.

I am new to the game and I dont know what I am doing wrong.
I have a Dark Elve, Nightblade class and use mainly dual wield.
Well, this doesnt seem to be good enough since I am level 12 now and I die way too often.
Also all enemies are around 2 levels above mine? Is this normal? I tried to do all quests and thought I did most.

I actually wanted to mainly go with dual wield and avoid magic. Well, I tried a magic staff and killing enemies was easy like that?! Mainly because I dont face them head to head and dont get much damage.
Is dual wield underpowered and magic overpowered? I really dont get it.
I also always use skills and morphed them too so I dont think Im missing some game mechanics.
I also block.

Many enemies I cant even beat without help of other players...
Is this game supposed to be like that? I thought I could do it in SP too. I really hate those MMORPGs that force you to go in groups.

What am I doing wrong...? Actually I just think about doing a new character since mine seem to suck.

Appreciate any help or ideas.

First off, there are more than enough quests to level up with. If you are noticing that you are under leveled take a step back and spend some time exploring the areas you were in previously, you will find more quests to do at your current level.

Are you dying to normal overworld enemies? There are some locations on the map that you might find difficult as a new player, namely world bosses (skull and crossbones icon on the map), dolmens (spiky spiral gear thing) and public dungeons (cave icon). World bosses can be soloed but inexperienced players are better off finding someone to help, same with dolmens. Public dungeons have larger groups of mobs and bosses that can be quite difficult if you are alone.

If it's just normal enemies you are having trouble with you probably need to work on your blocking & dodging skills and make sure you don't pull too many at once.

Finally, think about how well rounded your build is. Do you have a primary attack, a way to heal yourself, any defensive abilities. The first skill in the assassination tree is a fast, heavy-hitting attack, the first skill in your siphoning skill line is an excellent self-heal, and the first skill in the shadow tree is an excellent oh sh*t / escape button. Try and use these (and / or other skills) in a rotation that keeps your health topped off and the damage always going out.

Combat in this game comes down to rotations. If your just using Light and or Heavy Melee Attacks (weapons only) your going to have a tough time. Instead, invest skill points into your skills and figure out a rotation that works for you.

Typically a rotation is like this: (but you can make this anything you want)

1. An Opener that sets you up for your next attack. With a NB, that could be Cloak which makes your next attack a Critical Strike.
2. A Damage over Time, for a NB this would be Siphon (and since you used Cloak, each tick is also a critical
3. A Spam damage skill, like Hidden Blade or something similar
4. A Support or another spam skill
5. A Shield or recovery skill

What you use for the skills all depends, but figure out a rotation that makes sense to you and use that. Once your comfortable with your rotations, then you can weave in light or heavy attacks in between to extend and preserve your resources.

Your probably not at the Morph stage on a lot of your skills, but you have two choices, Stamina or Magic. Pick one and morph all skills to that resource. Then, when you use gear, use stuff that increases that resource pool. Easiest is Stamina or Magic glyphs on your armor, but some dropped or crafted sets increase this pool too.

Wear jewelry that benefits your playstyle and resources.

Use Blue Foods, and once at L20, you can use Blue or even Purple Foods to increase your resource pools.

Finally, don't stand in one place to take down mobs, move around, use terrain to your advantage, wait for one mob to wander off from the other two then take the one out, then the other two.

Hotkey Health potions so you can get some health back during a fight.

And, finally, remember, Be Mobile, Agile and Hostile.

Welcome to the game!

Some things to check would be to make sure that you have allocated all of your Attribute Points on your character page, and also have been picking and improving offensive skills from the Nightblade and dual wield skill lines. Don't forget the passives at the bottom of the skill list for each skill line, either.

Also, make sure that your armor is near your level, and does not need to be repaired. If your weapons are enchanted, you will need to recharge it periodically or it won't do that extra damage.

When you are questing, take the time and kill everything.

Each additional kill is XP and it will help you level. Typically, you can expect to be higher level than the creatures around you when you do this. Watch out for being too high because you will get less experience if you get too far ahead.

You are probably missing quests along the way, so make sure you stop and take all the side quests that come along. These are good places to get XP and keep your level moving upward.

Generally good advice, but I'm not sure which ability you mean by "Siphon". Also, do you have a source for the comment that applying DoT while cloaked results in the ticks being crits also?

In my experience, applying a DoT to standard mobs in small pulls shouldn't be a necessary part of rotation as a NB. Obviously, if you're having combat issues it might be more appropriate but at level 12 with melee focus they should be dropping before the DoT has a large impact. Maybe DoT someone if you pull too many but questing at 12 you shouldn't be pulling enough for DoT to pay off.

I'd suggest the following, with recommended morphs in brackets. If you want to use dual wield, I'd commit to all stamina morphs. Many of your class abilities are magicka to begin with, so you may have resource issues until you morph them:

Depending on how much damage you tend to take, enter the fight with either Shadow Cloak (Shadowy Disguise) or Teleport Strike (Ambush). Shadow Cloak is a more cautious approach. Because your next attack with be (Surprise Attack), a morph of Veiled Strike, this will set the enemy off balance an unable to attack you for four seconds. Once you morph to Shadowy Disguise, this attack will always crit making it a harder hitting opener. Ambush is a more aggressive entry but once you're more comfortable in combat this will let you enter battle faster and buff your next attack as well as applying a short stun.

For most enemies, you should be able to alternate between light attack and Surprise Attack, gradually learning how to cancel the light attack animation with the skill to speed up your rotation. This is called "animation cancelling" or "weaving" and is worth watching some YouTube videos on! This light attack, Surprise Attack flow should be your bread and butter spammable attack. You can do this until the enemy has under 25% health then move onto your execute.

Assassin's Blade (Killer's Blade) is another ability that's going to be much more useful once you have the stamina morph. This attack deals heavy damage to enemies under 25% health and once morphed, will heal you when you kill that enemy. This will be your main survival mechanism for a little while, so make sure you kill every enemy with Killer's Blade to keep your health topped up. If it gets low, pick the weakest enemy and focus them down to top your health up again with this execute ability.

Because you will gain experience in skill trees based on which skills are on your bar, I'd also add a skill from Dual Wield and one from Siphoning.

From Dual Wield, I would go with Twin Slashes because once you morph this into (Blood Craze) applying the skill will function as an early self-heal which are NB's key survival mechanism. The other morph, Rending Slashes is much better DPS but you can remorph it later when you acquire better self-heals. I know I said DoT isn't too critical for lower level mobs, but you get it for free here while gaining your real focus, the heal-over-time.

From Siphoning, I would slot Strife. This only has magicka morphs but once all of your skills are morphed into stamina, you could use this as a magicka dump and to gain a small heal-over-time on yourself. You mainly want to level up this skill tree because Siphoning Strikes (Siphoning Attacks) will grant you near-unlimited stam/magicka later in the game.

Once you get your Assassination tree high enough, grab Mark Target (Reaper's Mark) for an enormous self-heal whenever the marked enemy dies. When you reach level 15, consider putting bow on your back bar so that you can open combat from range with a heavy bow attack fired from stealth (not cloak, just crouch stealth), a Poison Arrow (Poison Injection) DoT and an area-effect damage-over-time Volley (Endless Hail).

If you're getting outnumbered, even with small pulls, consider dumping your magicka into Agony which will take one enemy out of the action for 30 seconds as long as you don't hit them, allowing you to focus down their friends before attacking them.

At level 12, what type of gear are you running?

Did you get someone to craft you a level 10 set or are you running around with a hodgepodge of randomly dropped pieces.

How is your gear enchanted compared to what type of skills your using.

A dark elf Night Blade will be very squish early on so I would recommend leveling up a healing staff and getting some extra heals.

You don't have to play with that weapon once you get to endgame but it's very nice while Ievelibg the first time with no Champion Points to have have some extra heals.

Look up some videos on you tube and make sure you are using skill appropriate to what your trying to do. Example if your using DW you should take the blood craze naoto of twin slashes for some healing and healing morph of flurry, bloodthirst. You don't have to use them forever but if your dying a lot you might what to try some extra heals.

Also world bosses are stronger mobs are not necessarily easy the first time and are meant to have a few people to kill, same can be said for delve bosses.

My Dark Elf Nightblade was my first character and complete pain the ass to level but looking back on it it was as much because I don't know what I was doing, using the wrong skills, using recovery drinks when I should have been using food, not putting any points or enchants into health while leveling as much as learning how the game works.

I rerouted and Imperial Templar and found leveling him much easier went back to my NB afterwards applied what I learned and didn't have a problem NB's are a super strong class once you figure them and the game out.

Game is too hard, until you know what you're doing and it's too easy.

My suggestion is to find a friendly guild. You can play almost all content solo on a nightblade but having friends will smooth out the way for you while you're still learning. Most guilds will also craft low level gear for free for you, which will make things a lot easier.

Honestly I did most of the things people said here...
Im not new to Elder Scrolls in general but that I am underleveled wonders me.
A friend has it the same and I dont think we missed any quests on the way.

We are in a Morrowind, the first region you visit after the north island. That place with the vulcano in the middle of the map.
Sorry, cant recall names yet. So you sure we missed any quests on the way?
I was wondered anyway, the enemy levels went from 12 abruptly to level 14.

Also I guess I used wrong skills. I also noticed that all my skills were morphed for Stamina which is bad because I always run out of it. I used some magicka skills too now. It is a little bit better.
Is there a way to respec or something? Or should I just make a new character....?

Welcome to a great game, no advice required.

Just enjoy to play including all challenges at the beginning as long you can.

Most of ESO players forgot how that feels anyway ...

Everything else is experience you will get by playing.

Try these:

1) If your ability costs stamina, increasing your stamina pool will increase the damage/healing the ability does. Same goes for Magicka abilities. Staff basic attacks get better with more Magicka invested, while all other weapons have their basic attacks improved by a larger stamina pool.

2) Use fully charged heavy attacks to recover resources. Heavy attacks with staves recover Magicka while all other weapons recover stamina on a fully charged heavy attack.

3) If you see white/yellow lines around an enemy's head, block! The enemy is trying to use a heavy attack on you, which will hurt. Blocking reduces the damage to near nothing while stunning the enemy and setting him off balance.

4) If you see swirls round an enemy's head (off balance) , use a heavy attack on him. This will knock him to the ground for 3 seconds, as well as dealing 50% more damage from the Heavy Attack as well as restoring 50% more resources.

5) If you see red lines instead, bash the enemy. This is done by pressing Right Mouse + Left Mouse buttons while standing next to him. This will set him off balance as well as dealing significant damage.

6) If you get stunned/knocked down/feared, try performing a bash. You will break free from the CC effect at a significant stamina cost.

7) If you find yourself unable to move, perform a dodge roll. This will free you from the root effect.

8) If you see a red circle on the ground, don't stand in it. If you are already in a red circle, get out of it as soon as possible.

9) You can respec your character when you reach Mournhold, Deshaan. Stuhn the God of ransom will be more then happy to take your gold. 50g per skill point spent.

10) Try to always keep moving in combat. Staying still isn't the best idea. Keep light on your feet and attempt to circle your enemies.

11) Stay out of Cyrodiil till you have mastered basic combat maneuvers. Enemy players are not as forgiving as the AI and will punish every single mistake you make. And a single mistake can be fatal.

Well this is MMO so you should expect that most content is for groups

. But ofc ESO isn't like this and most content is for solo players. Even dolmens, public dungeons, world bosses, they are actually more solo challenge than group.
You just need to be properly geared, know your offensive abilities, know that you have also defensive and healing abilities and you should learn how to use them and when with offensive.
If you need real help, get yourself into guild and ask guildies as much as you need. Ask someone from guild to go with you so you could see what and how they do and learn in fight. Also you can ask someone in guild to craft you better gears. You will gather raw mats from areas you scout and sell in guild trader, for this gold you can buy tempers to improve your gear stats, or you will pay someone for the crafting services/their mats - better way for low level beginners.

If you find yourself out leveled by enemies, try exploring more. There are plenty of areas that have a wide variety of enemy levels. The area near the volcano is a higher level area, try going around it for now, the areas to the north and to the west are going to be closer to your level.

And as some of the other people have said, this game requires you to be a bit more active in combat than done other MMOs. Since you're a nightblade, don't be afraid to stealth mid fight.

Hello DaedraPrince,
a few advises from me (I already leveled 6 chars to max level).

Watch some videos on youtube to learn the basic game mechanics. We can write much here but it's better to see it
Check all guild merchants in every major city for some "nuub"/low level item sets
Level up all armor-types, so you can wear 5 medium/heavy armor (as stamina class) but always wear one piece of every armor type. This is important because later in the game you might want to change to light or heavy armor, so you have access to all types. There are also light-armor sets for your class, later on in the game!
For multiple targets use the skill steel tornado (dual wield), as soon as you get it
For the beginning you should level 2h-swords, as 2h offers the first Area Effect (1. skill) which you can spam. This skill can be morphed into an area effect which offers you a tiny absorb shield. This helps enormously when you fight 3+ opponents. So you don't need to heal yourself while doing damage. So, you'll use 2h for 2+ targets and dual wield for single targets / strong targets
For boss-monsters (dolmens, dungeons, etc.) you can stick to dual wield, you just need 2 skills: Blood Craze (every 10 sec) and your spammable skill: Rending Slashes (50% of dmg = heal). This two skills alone are enough to keep you alive!! You don't need heals at all.
As you make more practice, you'll learn to block strong attacks, normally boss monsters do an animation (special colors, rasising the sword in the air, some sound, etc. etc.) BEFORE they make a heavy attack, this is when you need to block (right mouse button)
FIRST nightblade skills you'll need: Assasin's Blade - on your dual wield bar (as a finisher); teleport-strike (your charge attack); Blur (defense, only for pvp OR boss monsters); Siphoning Strikes / Siphoning Attacks, LATER on: Power Extraction (AE and 20% dmg buff); Soul Shred / Soul tether Ultimate (ae stun, strong dmg) on your AE bar and Death Stroke Ultimate OR Figher's Guild ultimate on your dmg-bar (dual wield)
YOU MUST learn to combine all nightblade skills in a way you have one skill of each respective skill tree on each bar (so you level all skill trees together
For the class/weapon which you choose, you don't need ALL nightblade skills!! (just the ones I mentioned and later on, in pvp: Mass Hysteria and Shadow cloak
Do ALL fighters-guild quests and dungeon (undead enemies) and skilll all fighters guild/mages guild passive abilities which raise your damage/ultimate gain against undead enemies, this is VERY important for PvE and a great help!
Start doing PvP every once in a while (2 times a week, at least), so you can get Rapid Maneuver (fast riding - GOOD for PvE and Caltrops (for your AE bar: 1. Caltrops 2. Power Extraction 3. Brawler (spammable)
Try to have only 1-2 skills which cost magicka on each bar, the rest: stamina (clear)

In general: Monsters in the area where you are playing should never be more than 5 level above you, if so: go back to the last area!

I was referring to the Siphon skill line, most of those skills are DoT's

I am basing this on my Combat Log Statistics that show the DoT Ticks criting. Yes, the ticks could be criting because of the 60% chance, but I would expect at least one to not crit if that was the case. Then again, I crit almost every time when I am at 60% or better and my NB is typically around 70% or better.

The point I was trying to make is to select skills in the rotation so that one will buff the next skill. Applying a DoT as a second attack is usually a good idea as it's basically "free" damage that happens whether you apply a skill or not. Couple that with some tactical running away, you can sometimes kill a mob by letting it chase you while it has a DoT applied. Does it apply on all situations? No.

Not true, although it's tougher for stamina.

Vigor is a strong stamina heal, although you have to PvP enough to unlock it.

On the two handed skill line, Rally is also a great option.

Thats 40 levels of no self heals for a stamblade. Not good advice

I can get vigor in a couple hours of pvp.

Need to go most populated campaign (CP enanbled)
Bow and resto staff. TAG EVERYTHING

For a new NB, go Magicka focus and spam Strife/Swallow Soul (in your Siphoning tree). Should be able to handle all overland questing with just that.

Add more things as you feel more comfortable. If you want, switch to a Stamina focused build later.

I started out as a stamina based dual wield Khajiit Nightblade as well. I also had a really rough time. Constantly died. It got so bad that I ended up quitting the game for a while, I just didn't enjoy the struggle. When I came back, I made a magicka based character with destruction and restoration staves. It was 1000x easier to play and I ended up having so much fun that I was able to stick with the game and gain a better understanding of it.

Eventually, I went back to my stamina character, and I had a much more enjoyable time now that I had more experience with the game.

Basically, my advice is to play a magicka build starting out. You're going to get a lot of people saying how this game is too easy and stamblade is the OP FotM, but I think it's one of the hardest things to start out as since the play style is completely different than other rogue/thief type classes in other MMOs. Also, being a glass cannon works well in pvp and grouping, but is tough for solo leveling.

The caster builds on the other hand are pretty consistent with other games and you can usually kill things before they reach you. Sorcerers get a pet that can tank for you too. I'd recommend that for starting out.

Magicka is good advice. I recommend starting with Templar class. Survival is pretty easy while you learn the game. By level 20 you unlocked enough skills to respec and go either mage or stam to sure up your build.

You actually hate online games that forces you to play with others... ? I'm not sure to understand the logic behind that... However, luckily for you, TESO is a game with a LOT of solo content (far too much in my opinion).

Now about the fact that you are underleveled... well it's weird because you shouldn't be. You probably missed some quests on the way. Are you entirely sure you did all the quests ? main area quest, sublocations quests, secondary quests, guild quests, main storyline ? Cause doing that should bring you above the level of the mobs you fight, not the contrary. Maybe you could share a screenshot of your area maps so that someone familiar with the Pact can tell you if you missed some sublocations for example.

Then, about your build : There is no place for things like hybrid in TESO. You must choose to be either stamina or magicka. Spend your attribute points into that ressource, with some in HP if you feel like you need so (you can always reset later).
Use a weapon that fits your ressource choice. If you go for stamina, play with dual wield, two handed or bow. If you go for magicka, play with a staff. The only exception here is the Sword and Board, wich is a stamina weapon but can be used by both stamina and magicka tanks. Also, just like the weapon, play with an armor that fits your ressource choice. Stamina players use medium armor while magicka players use light armor. You can add one or two pieces of heavy armor to increase your resistance (preferably on the chest piece. Avoid hands and belt cause they have the lowest resistance value).
Now, stamina users can't heal themself as easily as magicka users. That DOESN'T mean you should use a healing staff. Don't ever do that. You can dodge, you can block, you can cloak... Try not to get hit and burst the mobs as fast as possible. In TESO, the best defense is usually a good offense.

Magicka is good advice. I recommend starting with Templar class.

So a dualwield nightblade comes for help, and the best advice you can give him is "give up roll a magicka templar" ?

Oh. I also wanted to mention that if you're feeling under leveled and you want to make up some levels, grab a ranged weapon and join the zerg in Cyrodiil. You can earn exp and loot for participating and you may find that it's actually a lot of fun.

There's a Cyrodiil campaign for people under level 50 that you can join. Once in, just ask in the zone chat to join one of the large groups. Don't worry, it's not like regular grouping, you're basically just a face in the crowd still, but joining the group lets you gain credit for the group's accomplishments. Follow them around and play it safe as you learn the ropes. If your group does well you can earn Alliance Points which you can spend on equipment and you'll get exp as you accomplish objectives.

Then, after you gain a few levels in Cyrodiil, you can return to your normal questing, but you'll feel a lot stronger since you'll no longer be underleveled.

Problem is no longer a issue.

I just started the game the wrong way.
I didnt use the skills properly too.
I made a completely new character with new classes and races and gave the skills and items more attention.
Works without problems now.

Well, except that I am a Vampire (which I wanted) but the issue with it is that Fire attacks often one hit kill it.
In Stage 4 at least. Against bosses. And staying on Stage 1 or 2 is near impossible due to the way how the feeding system works.
1st, the feeding only seems to work on some people inside towns. Not on enemies, dafuck? Whats the sense of that?
Total bullcrap, seriously. 2nd is that using vampire skills advances it. In combination with the fire weakness its a total game killer. What about lowering the weakness a bit or at least overhauling the feeding system? Or maybe add vampire lord transformations for Rank 10 vampires.

Another game were vamps are underpowered and werewolves are op. Great...
Skyrim was the same. Without the DLC vampires sucked hard. Dawnguard + Better vampires best.

You can feed on enemies, they just have to be humanoid. Bandits are always a good bet. You still have to sneak up behind them.

The fire weakness actually isn't that bad, either, once you get to higher levels. At lower levels, I would recommend putting a fire resistance glyph on one of your jewelry pieces if it's giving you trouble.

The toughest adjustment for me when I turned Vampire was the giant reduction in health regeneration. Going from about 400 to less than 100 was a bit of an adjustment; basically I am 100% responsible for manually keeping my health up. My vampire is a healer, so she didn't have to adjust bars or anything, but it was an adjustment to my mentality when playing.

AOE and self sustain are the key, and dont belive on guides that say you to go to a glass cannon as dps, those guides are for end game and experienced players. If you want to run as stamblade for e.g. to put some skills from siphoning in the early, eve n using magicka.
