Crash on Launch after patch

Thanks for all the additional information, everyone. Just to recap a few points:
    • After yesterday's hotfix, you will now receive a message if you are running a system that is not DirectX11 compatible (it says "Your DirectX version is unsupported"). This should help clear up any confusion about whether or not your system is meeting the new spec.
    • If you haven't done so already, please review our current minimum system requirements.
    • We've seen a few confirmations (both publicly and via PM) that completely removing the game and reinstalling has helped in the event you are meeting min spec, but unable to launch. Make sure you have also downloaded all other required updates as outlined in this help article.

    Thanks for the update.

Other than the DirectX version message, is there an explanation for the "Unable to initialize render device" error on launch that some of us have been experiencing since yesterday's hotfix (see quote below for example)?

Nothing yet on my end; the latest I have received from support is that my issue is being "elevated to a specialized team", who I'm told will be in contact with me. When that happens, I'll share anything I find out.

In the meantime, I'd suggest that anyone else experiencing this error should also submit a support ticket (if you have not already done so); the more information they have for this specific issue, the better the chances of finding a solution.

Is everyone running DX11? Remember, as of today, we are not supporting DX9 or any graphics cards and operating systems that are not compatible with DirectX 11.
This info is not correct as my main rig is the one that is down and my wife running an older laptop with a lower level video card runs fine. but machines do have direct x 11.1 on them but the laptop vid card is direct x 10 compliant.

I'm another with a laptop that only does dx10.1. I bought the game a couple months ago and now I can't play. My laptop is less than 3 years old. I've installed dx11 but it doesn't help
  • mjstevenson1.msb16_ESO
My main runs a Nvidia gtx 295 and will not run after the update, but my laptop with a nvidia gtx 460m runs the game just fine with no issues. Both cards are DX10.

Got my new card and after some load screens got in and was able to do some TG quest with no problems so far.
  • mjstevenson1.msb16_ESO
hmmm just rechecked the specs and the gtx 460m is dx11.
  • mjstevenson1.msb16_ESO
well that just sucks....this means to play the game I have to invest big bucks in a new system.
  • mjstevenson1.msb16_ESO
ESO must be trying to get rid of a lot of customers with this upgrade. was going to get the orsinium and rouges addon packages for 2 account but it looks like they just saved me money by making the game unplayable.

@mjstevenson1.msb16_ESO - You don't need to purchase an entirely new system to upgrade your video card unless it's a laptop. Given that you're replacing a GeForce GTX 295, I can safely assume you're using a desktop system.

Amazon has the EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4 GB card for USD 209.99. It should be at least comparable in performance to your GTX 295 if not quite a bit faster depending on the specific game.

Please note that ESO seems to have issues with factory overclocked cards (you can find multiple threads on here in regards to that), so I recommend going with a stock clocked card.

Just now I got my 2-nd crash in last 5 minutes, after fresh start of my PC. No system message in crash note, I submitted crash report. I meet 64 bit requirements and play smoothly on average settings with i5, 8GB, GTX660Ti, 15Mbit cable with 50-100FPS and ~80ping. Starting eso 64bit without launcher.

I got 2 crashes in Glenumbra's main city, when standing near to dye station, first time I was just writing on guild chat, then crash and started game again - next crash when I applied a dye to my armor.

Before doing this I was playing all day today, about 6 hours without a single crash, then game crashed suddenly inside some delve area after these 6 hours, and then again I played about 2 hours without crash, doing multiple things and fighting multiple enemies.

I doubt it's anything wrong with my PC, all other games, including GuildWars2, SWTOR and many online shooters, do not crash at all. Seems an ESO speciality after TG dlc - which I do not own, to be precise.

I'm impatiently awaiting official patch improving crashes and increasing stability/graphics stuttering.

I know there has been a lot of divergent discussion in this thread, but please keep in mind that the thread title and subject specifically call out crashes on launching the game. If you can actually launch and log in before it crashes, you are probably experiencing different issues. I don't mean to be rude, but I think that we can all get better information, responses, and solutions if different problems are kept to different discussions. It's in all of our best interests to keep on topic, so for your sake and ours, I'd ask anyone experiencing different kinds of failures to create or post in appropriate threads, rather than bogging down an already lengthy thread with technical details and information that likely have nothing to do with the problems which the thread was created to address.

    Thanks!

My 32-bit client crashed when I tried to port to Wrothgar from Cyrodiil.
There is a constant 999+ lag and the game crashes all the time on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
Is this a DDOS or server side connectivity issue ?
    Server: PC EU

@ZOS_GinaBruno Can you please check this out at your side ?
It will be most appreciated

Edit: There is no crash log since it only crashes to the login menu each time(not a complete crash).

PC NA main: The Magic - AD magicka Sorcerer

Please see my post above. I'm 99% certain that the in-game crashes are a separate issue from those that cannot even get the client to run, and we would all be better served if the information, details, and responses on these issues were kept in separate threads. Otherwise there is much potential for confusion and misinformation, and that doesn't help anyone get their problems solved.

All of you complaining about video card support - every ATI and Nvidia board (except one) released in the last SIX YEARS supports DX11 (all nvidia 400 series and later, except the OEM 405 and every ATI board HD5000 series and later)

I have no idea what the problem is, this is my card.

    http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-650ti-boost

Everything is up to date, card info page says it supports up to dx12, my own info says it's working off 11 too. Tried everything suggested in this thread and the other one in the general discussions forum. Still crashing at launch.

Zenimax your game is very fun, I enjoy it far more than any other MMO I've ever touched. But since Orsinium the bugs have become worse and worse to the point where I don't even want to try to get this game to work anymore. No other game or program I use gives me even half the trouble ESO does.

Was this last update the only fix coming for the crashes? The new 'upgrade your rig' message or is there any real fix coming for the crash at launch?

15 pages, 30k views in this thread and 18k views in the other thread says crashes are a big problem for your customers. Sure some have outdated cards, but there are plenty of people that should be able to play and can't. Either due to the crash at launch or from the other thread the frequent crashes ingame.

Hey, Zenimax, I suggest stop releasing DLC which broke this pretty game.
No one annual report cost our nerves and dissapointment in ur product
Better 2 stable DLC in year than 4 and this themes

I am not at Minimum spec but it appears that reinstalling ESO has cleared up whatever was going on. I am now able to log into the game and access characters without issue.

ZigoSid: Glad to hear that you are back in game.

This made me laugh and I will tell you why. My system is quite recent, so recent in fact that I have not had it a year yet. I started playing ESO back in 2014 when it was delayed on the XBOX so I did the whole buy it on PC with a "promise" that it would be transferred over to the console. When I decided console was a waste and my laptop graphics were annoying me to the core I built my beast of the present time.

    OS: WIN7 w/WIN10 upgrade
    CPU: 4790k with AIO loop
    GPU: GTX970
    RAM: 16GBs@2133MHz
HDDs: Ha HA!!! The beast would not be BEAST with a HDD.. OS and ESO are on two separate SSDs
    PSU: 750W Modular
    Router: Nighthawk X6

I was loving the game for a good few months after my system was built and rightfully so with a decent amount of power in the case. Eventually life kicked in and I got swamped with work and kinda lost interest after my guild died. When I got some free time I decided I would play me some ESO and got hit with a patch.. I expected it since I had not played in a few months. Some time goes by and a little bit after orsinium drops I get a patch and decide to start up and crash.. crash.. crash.. crash.. crash.. crash.. crash.. Holy Azura! Not even ten minutes would go by without a crash. I wasted a ton of XP scrolls. I consulted to support page.. The entire support page for my specific code(ESO crashed unexpectedly) and nothing! I contacted support and basically did the entire support page over again with email correspondance and also submitted DxDiag with a report from the launcher. Through out that week a couple patches download and it starts to work for a few hours before crashing. EPICALLY STOKED for playtime and the Thieves guild drops...... I start up and surprisingly I played a good Fri. night til mid Sat. without a single crash. Next log in got a patch and weird pink on my characters followed by a crash. Basically I have gotten to the point that I start up ESO and DL the patch wait for crash and switch to The Division. sucks, but whatever. I have not played in awhile due to crashes, fortunately for me I have another game I enjoy. Funny thing is ESO is the only game&mmo that crashes on me. The Division, HellaUltraModded to OVER9000!! Skyrim, Fellout 4, and an indie mmo game play very smoothly with ABSOLUTELY ZERO problems! I am starting to side with the rest of the PCMRace that feel their system is impervious to problems, since I have a pretty beast build and have no problems with anything other than ESO. So until I can play without crashing I am not wasting my time trying to troubleshoot the game. I am also going to do one more month of ESO+ and I am cancelling it all together. All and all I don't really think people's systems are the issue. After experiencing my issues I am starting to think that it is buggy software. I really enjoy this game as it is all that I wanted out of WoW, but modders cannot finish this one like they did Skyrim.

Maybe after my system upgrade it will decide to work again. Figured another MB, M.2, 980Ti, Custom Loop, and fresh install of everything I should be fine............... til I get another patch.. XD

I ended up on this forum after troubleshooting eso for my daughter on an unchangeable PC(nonOC-able etc)

LostGamer: I honestly did not have time to read the full post so if I hit something you have done already I apologize. Normally when I run into errors with games and there is no fix on forums I will google error messages. Some MMOs/Games often have the same problems and sometimes I get lucky in finding a fix that actually works. Please take these suggestions with a grain of salt.
    1: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/115177/launcher-wont-open
Towards the bottom of this thread there is a possible fix.
    2: https://forums.robertsspaceindustries.com/discussion/179391/host-singleinstance
    host-singleinstance, again towards the bottom.
    Hope this helps.

Exodus5656: Not to give the level 1 help desk “Did you turn it off and on again?” but have you tried reinstalling? Also did your daughter have the same issue and was it fixed?

zFireWyvern: Fingers crossed. Check out what I posted above. Hopefully some of this helps or gives someone a direction that gets them up and running.

Well, I'm still waiting for the "specialized team" to contact me; it's been nearly two weeks and no word yet. I'm not holding my breath, but I am emailing support every few days to keep poking them and to keep the ticket open.

  • Blackbird71

Well, I was finally contacted by the "specialized team", and surprise, surprise, all they did was repeat the exact same points that tier 1 support has listed (hardware requirements, update graphics drivers, delete UserSettings.txt, etc.), and which I had already addressed (multiple times in some cases). Then the followed up the message with a line, "Beyond these steps, we are unable to provide any further support."

What total crap! What is the point of having a "specialized team" that can only do the same thing that tier 1 support does (and takes 2 1/2 weeks longer to do it)? I certainly hope the "specialized team" isn't getting paid any better than tier 1 support, otherwise ZOS/Bethesda are seriously wasting their money.

Of course I'm not letting it stand there; I gave a lengthy response addressing all their steps (again), and gave them a bit of advice on what they need to do to actually address and fix the problem (starting with actually answering the question of what would cause the specific "render" error being thrown on crash). But really, I think at this point they need to just admit that whether intentionally or not, they have just defrauded a significant portion of their customers by replacing a functioning product with a useless one.
