I'm the idiot, not ZOS. I posted about character corruption. But after more research it turns out all the characters I could log into had Master Merchant turned off. The characters that I could log into had that addon turned off.

The latest Master Merchant update is causing the log in screen crashes for me at least maybe this will help someone else.

How can I disable or remove the Master Merchant add on when I can't even get to the character select screen? The game crashes the second I launch the game from the launcher, or click on the executable. Is there some config file somewhere where It can be excluded or some additional tool available that will let me add/remove add-ons outside of the game? Will Minion do that?

You can delete it from the addon folder under documents\eso\live\addons or minion has an uninstall

You do want to run dxdiag to make sure you are running DX10+. You can do that by pressing the WINDOWS button (on your keyboard) and R then type dxdiag hit enter

Since the Thieves Guild launch, I've been having the same problem that others have described in this thread. Specifically, after clicking "Play" on the launcher (not in character select), my screen goes blank (white), and then the crash reporter window pops up asking me to submit an error report.

However, after updating today, the crash has changed slightly. Now after clicking "Play" (still on the launcher), my screen goes blank (black), and then a window pops up titles "Critical error (render)", containing the message "Unable to initialize render device)".

I am currently running on Windows Vista x64, with DirectX 11 on an NVidia GeForce 400-series graphics card (not mobile). I have been in contact with customer support over the past few days, and have tried multiple fixes including repairing the game, removing and reinstalling the game, updating graphics drivers, updating windows, etc., etc., and nothing so far has solved the problem.

I'm open to any other suggestions at this point, and if I find anything that works I will be sure to share it.

I was fine until today. But after this patch it's just broken. Took me half an hour to horse feed my first 4 characters.

Spent twenty minutes trying and failing to get into the game to do the next character earlier today. Same thing now. Giving up.

    Please fix.

There is no technical difference in graphics between DirectX11 running on Vista and on Windows 7 as both OS versions are built on the same foundation. So while Windows 7 is listed as a minimum requirement, there is no technical rational for this distinction, nor is there any graphical processing reason why a game that runs on 7 should not run on Vista (assuming Vista is up to date with SP2 and all other relevant updates).

Plus of those others in this thread who have cited the same crash symptoms I am experiencing, some have stated they are running Vista while others are running 7, so it is unlikely that the OS is the issue here.

C'mon, having Vista & non-DX11 card in 2016 means that you should, before anything else, upgrade and update if you want to play. You cannot expect a modern 2016 game to be forever compatible and run on system that is so heavily deprecated. Further, Vista was a flop the moment it was released.

The price for new Windows was very low and there were lots of heavy discounts (I bought W8 for like 15$ and updated to W10 for free), and DX11-ready cards are very cheap too.

But ESO isn't a modern nor a 2016 game. It's 2 years old. The game is the same as it was before they dropped the dx10 support. NOTHING has changed apart from lots of people not being able to play suddenly. This is an MMO and in my opinon an MMO should be accessible to a broad audiance. And since buying laptops has been a trend now for almost 10 years now and laptops have inferior specs than desktops, lots of people have been screwed. Upgrading a laptop is not as cheap or easy as it is upgrading a desktop.

Sure, blame the folks for not having the proper rig to play the game anymore. That's fine. But don't expect them to rush and buy new hardware just for the sake of playing ESO either.

I'm just worried stunts like these will turn too many people away and in the end there will be only a few left and the game will lose it's point completely.

Hey guys, I wanted to share some good news for all the laptop users out there -

I FINALLY GOT THE GAME TO WORK!

    Here's what I'm working with:
a Dell Inspiron 11 (3000 series, intel i3 one of those 2in1 notebook/tablets that are relatively new), running 8gb of ram with a samsung evo SSD. (graphics are integrated - intel(R) 520 I believe)
    and
a HP Pavilion 17, intel i3, with 8gb of RAM and also a samsung evo SSD.

These are the same laptops I've been playing on up until the crash, and also these are the same ones that Support told me would NOT work with the game any longer

Yesterday, I tried updating both of them. For the Dell I had to actually install it over again because I had deleted it the night before out of frustration. The HP updated fine, and I made it to the login screen as usual. I clicked "Settings" and changed the Graphics to "Low" and saved it, then I logged in. The first TWO times it timed out after 5 minutes of watching the loading screen, but on the THIRD time, it took me to the character select screen. Excited as hell, I hit enter and in like a minute or two after that I was back online, playing the game on the HP. The graphics were a little degraded than before, but there was no lag, no glitching (that I could tell), and it didn't crash once for me.

I decided to go for the Dell next. Once reinstalled, I continually attempted to log in throughout the day, with it timing out up to 15 times. I just would sign in, leave it, and come back to repeat the steps after it timed out each time. Finally, I switched the graphic settings to "Minimum" on the dell, and logged in again. I prolly logged in a good 5 more times (and got the timeout window each time) before FINALLY getting to the character select screen. I had to hit Enter almost immediately, because when it finally got to that screen, it would be about 10 seconds away from the 5 minute timeout mark. Anyways, I was able to load my character on the Dell, and was (sorta) able to play. The Dell's quality on the game left something to be desired tho. Prior to Thieves Guild, I could play on the Dell just fine without any lag or graphic degradation. When I finally got it loaded and working last night, I noticed it was horribly slow and laggy. Almost completely impossible to play, but still possible.

Anyways, as far as "what I did" to fix it, I've tried so many different things - all coming from this forum post, so thats why I wanted to update you guys.

-Both clients run from the Launcher (I never went and tried going to the eso64.exe or anything like that, I always hit "play" from the launcher)
-Both Launchers run as admin each time
-I downloaded and installed the windows sdk thing that contained dxcpl, set that to "Force WARP" and 11_1 and added eso.exe to the list.
-I'm running Windows 10 on both computers (don't know if that plays a part in it, but I thought I'd share)
-I clicked the update to download and install the latest C++, but it said my system had a newer version, so I went to "Windows Update" and it installed a newer version of C++. I also made sure I had installed all windows updates available
    - I also uninstalled and deleted the folder for the Public Test Server. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but again, just noting the different things I've done to get this far
-and finally, I attempted to log in NUMEROUS times. My theory was that if it could get passed the shading cache or whatever its doing during that long login period, then I could get into the game. And it worked.

(if you guys have any questions, let me know. I'll do my best to help, because this has been the most frustrating thing ever.)

    see y'all in the game.

There is quite a lot of misinformation from users in this thread regarding the age of certain technologies.

DirectX 11 was released to market on October 22, 2009. It is compatible with all Windows operating systems since Windows Vista (which required a feature update to support it).

All ATI Radeon HD 5000-series cards and later AMD-branded cards support DirectX 11. These were released in 2009.

All Nvidia GeForce 400-series cards and later (with the noted exception of the GeForce 405 which was OEM-only) support DirectX 11. These were released in 2010.

Those who are submitting issues regarding their GeForce 9800 GT should realize that you are using a video card that is almost eight years old (July 2008). ZeniMax shouldn't have to think twice about dropping support for a card that old.

well, i dont want and cant buy a new card now and another one when dx12 is needed...and certainly cant spend 160 bucks for a gtx 950 with dx12..

Who said anything about using a non-DX11 card? My card is specifically among those which ZOS has listed as being compliant with their game requirements.

And what exactly is wrong with running Vista? It's still an MS supported operating system for another year, and in many technical respects it is identical to Windows 7.

I have seven different computers in my house, running OSes ranging as far back as Windows 95 all the way up through 8.1. Of all of them, Vista has been the most stable platform I have ever owned, even better than XP or 7. I'm convinced that those who have a negative view of Vista have based their opinion purely on the PR surrounding the initial release rather than any actual experience with post-service pack Vista.

It is a modern and timely upgraded game. Just because the first version was released in 2014 doesn't mean it was finished 2 years ago. That's like saying Photoshop is 26 year old program and should run on W3.11. Lots and lots of game components have been added, updated and improved since 2014. We just got a 64bit client and I guess the whole game optimization will go towards 64bit in the future. So yeah, expect the minimum game specs to go up. ZOS, more than anyone else wants to have as wide as possible gaming audience, they would never restrict the players with if they didn't have a valid and well thought reason behind this decision. ESO is a mammoth project that is actively maintained.

As for Vista, yeah, it's a nice OS _when_ you remove TONS of bloat, preferably during installation using the custom manager. If not, it runs like hell. Been there done that.

My game crash up-date..Was getting error with 32bit launcher and crash with 64bit launcher.
I finally got it fixed!!!! Huzzah!
Turns out, (and yes I have 960GPU, RAM, etc), I had some corrupt files, either from update or were there before. I uninstalled ESO completely, and reinstalled.( I actually had to do it twice as I didn't get them all clean first time.) I reinstalled my Divx11.
Also, I uninstalled my GeForce Experience, and reinstalled my Nivida drivers.I set my LUA memory at max. I up-dated all my add-ons and re-scanned with Minion.
And BOTH my launchers now work, with all my add-ons, even out of date ones. No pink horses or nude npc's! No crash's!
I do have a glitch of my screen freezing for 1-3 secs with the 64bit, but all in all, WORKING GOOD! Yay!
I want to apologize for any mutterings or curses under my breath and thank you at Zos for being patient with us more frustrated players.I was really frustrated since I have a upper GPU, good RAM, etc and I couldn't play, blamed Zos, and found out it was on my end. Hope maybe this will help others. Yes, all the re-installing was a pain, but was worth it...Thanks again for a great game and helping us out in times of strife. lol..Huzzah!

Thanks for all the additional information, everyone. Just to recap a few points:
    • After yesterday's hotfix, you will now receive a message if you are running a system that is not DirectX11 compatible (it says "Your DirectX version is unsupported"). This should help clear up any confusion about whether or not your system is meeting the new spec.
    • If you haven't done so already, please review our current minimum system requirements.
    • We've seen a few confirmations (both publicly and via PM) that completely removing the game and reinstalling has helped in the event you are meeting min spec, but unable to launch. Make sure you have also downloaded all other required updates as outlined in this help article.

Your PS comparison doesn't really fit. Original PS that was released in 1990 still runs on machines and OS it was made for. That version on PS is old indeed. But Adobe released "sequels" that each required a better machine. Photoshop is a live and regularly updated franchise but the original Photoshop is an old and dated program.

Modern or not, ESO right now is a mess. Considering how Zenimax is treating this whole fiasco, I don't have much hope for this game at all anymore. The whole dropping of Dx10 seems like only a part of a larger set of problems that plague ESO since last week. It's really a shame because they've stepped up and did a lot of good last year. The game was enjoyable and quite fun, but after this mess, I just can't bring myself to even run it again. I basicly haven played it since Thieves Guild was released. Not to mention the way Zenimax is communicating with costumers.

Well after repairing the game twice I finally got the game running again.

I couldn't bear the thought of uninstalling the game and then re-downloading the whole 80-90gb if that is what you meant by completely removing the game and reinstalling it again.

Please don't do a maintenance update like this again. We are here to enjoy the game and not to get upset about it because some of your encoders was over confident that his patch was not going to break anything.

OK, so now the game is telling me I am no longer supported. So that's that.

I will not ever, for the life of me, understand the reasoning behind this business decision. I quite literally have money in my hand right now I would like to give you for TWO DLC's and the adventurer's pack which I was fully ready to buy when I logged in 3/7.

Business must be good, indeed, if you can be selective about your customers.

That being said, I have to say, actually, I am not missing ESO as much as I thought I would. Being forced to go cold turkey has made me realize it really wasn't as important to me as I thought it was. There's other stuff to do, so this is not as much as a catastrophe as I would have told you it was on 3/7. So eventually when I do get around to upgrading, I am not sure if I will really even consider coming back. Maybe, who knows at this point.

Thanks for a fun year, at any event, and see you around, I'm sure. Can't wait for the next creative shafting you'll give me. You always do seem to outdo yourself from the last reaming I've gotten from you.
