Entering text on Xbox is clunky as all hell, and I realize that that's the best they can do. It takes easily five times longer (possibly even more, I haven't actually timed myself) to enter a screen name or password on Xbox compared to PC. Text chat conversations need to be quick and easy, and that's just not very doable on a console. Also, because you can't easily resize and relocate UI elements like you could on a PC, you're running the risk of the chat box being either too big and obtrusive, or so small that you can't read the text, neither of which will make it useful.
Now, let me make it clear, I'm NOT against text chat. I just don't find the concept of it to be practical on a console.
It may not be practical for you, but there are many people out there such as myself that have keyboards to utilize, they even have special keyboards that plug right into the controller.
As far as cyber bullying...one or the other provide an opportunity to cyber bully (which is not different than bullying or being rude...remove cyber out, it's being a jerk or immature behaviors towards another)
Now text abuse vs voice abuse.
-if via text, it's up for all to see over a very large zone or area
-if it's voice it's limited to 25 yards or guild and party/group chat.
The bullying or bad behavior has greater damage via text especially with screen shot and tweet, video recording and editing or reproduction capabilities. Voice can't be recorded in most cases without extra hardware and software on consoles.
Movie is more positive for this and most ideal.
In regards to how text chat is less valuable vs voice chat "on console"
-requires another peripheral to be effective
-time consuming to enter and read responses
-requires additional buttons of the controller reducing gameplay effectiveness
-pauses gameplay or takes a players hands off the control pad (unless typing with the controller which takes a lot longer)
-is impersonal
-allows other to quickly repeat text that another user may not want to see
-consoles are somewhat limited in a way to block text only communications only by user without blocking the same user all together
-requires portion of the screen which blocks or hides gameplay
As far as voice being harder to setup...well that may be but for consoles, it's a requirement for online games so either you do it or your game doesn't get approved.
Regarding people not being your definition of social and text chat somehow making everyone more social.
-some people do not want to talk or interact with others, they just want to play solo.
-text chat is yet another form of communication. If I'm on console and choose not to talk using my voice, the idea of needing to type instead and read while playing isn't a guaranteed motivation. Text chat can offer a mute or deaf gamer an opportunity to communicate but that's all it does, it offers a chance. Someone like me, if this were added will, if possible, always keep it closed so it doesn't offer them any chance to communicate with everyone.
We each will define when, where and how we want to communicate with other gamers.
Those choices begin with picking a platform.
Next is choosing a game
Lastly is by headset or mic, Kinect, ps eye or not at all.
You and some others in this topic has taken the position that a lot of others feel the way you do.
I think in the best participated poll, we saw the PC to console folks expressing interest in having the text chat added but even in that thread there was a lot of votes just cause they could vote.
Do you run into people while playing that you don't know that suggest they wish they could talk to you and others via text vs voice. I doubt it but do you?
In those cases is it regarding communication or is it just a desire to broadcast announcement like info over large areas?
I think as a PC gamer and a console gamer I have plenty of choice and opportunity.
I own both versions...I choose to play where the opportunity best fits my desires.
I'm happy as many others are as well regarding communication.
Find your happiness in a way that doesn't impact others regardless of if you see it as negative or neutral.

I think its implementation is the source of contention.
I would love to see an app fill the text need and include some useful functions. Maybe some from various addons.
I personally don't want to use a keyboard or a mini keyboard or have to toggle a text box off each and every time I log in a LA voice chat style.
Many people aren't considering that text chat would be added from their imagination into the game without any hiccuos because glitches and bugs never happen in even the most desired of features.
Nope you actually have no opposition here just a debate as to how it can happen.

You know what the difference is? Text is recordable by logs. Making it possible to report. Making it possible to ban. And on consoles you can ban the user far more effectively than on pc as you can ban the psn or xbox equivalent.
In voice chat these things are all but impossible to catch, prove and take action against.
So yes give those idiots the chance to type. Then we would get rid of them sooner.

Selfish people these days.
I was going to say the same thing about you.
Text chat on console NEEDS to be in the form of an app. Not gawdy text box.
A fringe group feels the only way to have text chat is to interrupt and annoy the interface.
Most of the pro and con crowd agree on a text app.
Its the solution that will happen.
And yet again you don't get it. People who want text chat don't agree that it "interrupts" or "annoys" the interface. They wouldn't be asking for it in the first place. You shouldn't be worried if you're going to have it disabled anyways. Move along.
I play on PC and the text chat is not annoying in anyway. That's your issue. People are asking for this option, there's nothing harmful about it. You can continue playing the game as it is.

Its obvious that you know I am correct and need to try to painstakingly deconstruct my each and every post.
I don't think I could get a stronger endorsement.
Most people scroll by stuff that doesn't make sense.
And yet you have composed a 500 word love letter to my changing stance.
I am an adult with the ability to allow my ideas to evolve with new input.
I think SOME people cling to dogma or one idea as the holy grail.
I on the other hand thought text chat was pointless, then played PvP and decided text would be useful there for large scale conflicts.
But I still don't want some awful text box on my screen.
Hence a second screen experience solution.
It helps to read all the posts, as I have stated as much.
Still, thanks for legitimizing my opinion as the non dogmatic, reasoned compromise that it has evolved into.
Cheers.
PS if you have no faith in a persons ability to change his mind given new information then why even post into a discussion?

SO yes comparing the fact that in Destiny we learned to use 4,yes FOUR, emotes to communicate means that in ESO it is easy as pie to communicate.
We have voice channels, masses of emotes, guild channels , ingame mail, etc. While it might seem like text chat is needed its more of a want than a need.
Id like it sure, enter cryodiil, in chat , lfg, etc and off we go. But im in guilds, have *friends* and rarely spend that long finding where the fight is.
Text chat wont stop the kids playing rap or idiots eating doritos with open mic. Id rather have a mute option than chat channels right now.
And ESO wont flop because we want text chat. There are far more worrying issues like cold harbour siege stuff and the terribly broken audio ( im talking console not pc) Id STILL rather have fixes before text chat.
Tell ya what, if you can tell us how to have a deaf or hard of hearing individual to communicate with others effectively without text chat then you MIGHT have a good point, also I don't care if text chat wont stop the kids playing rap or idiots eating doritos with open mic. However it will be nice to have the text chat so I can choose to leave voice chat and can still communicate and the child can still eat his Doritos and have rap playing lol win win.
You wont find many if any deaf or hard of hearing console users full stop. ESO is on pc with full chat system and harsh as it is, consoles function with voice chat in just about every game and therfor i highly doubt deaf users would pick them as their gaming hardware.
TBH its like saying controllers are evil cause quadriplegics cant use em and you want mind control straps to come with yoru xbox.

See, that doesn't make any sense to me. If I'm going to buy a keyboard, I may as well just play on PC because my PC already has a keyboard.
Well said!
THIS is one part of the issue.
Well commented...another is managing a controller keyboard interaction where two hands are required on one or the other to be most effective...I guess you can half-a$$ it but who wants that experience when it works best on PC.
Also, no one is or has addressed how to scroll, right click, link, etc without a mouse.
I mean, sure they could change the controller key bindings but then you're giving up functionality and you now how to stop to communicate which is the larger issue.
Neverwinter is a good example of this kinda working but the sacrifices made for it to kinda work are overwhelming reasons not to go down that path. May as well be a keyboard and mouse game....which then, it may as well be a PC game.
When you get to a point where you need another controller or device plugged in such as a mouse or keyboard you've crossed over into a "Why the heck is this on console" situation.
Too funny. Well said how? How about the people that only have consoles and not a PC?
And this is not a new concept, gentlemen. People have been using controller and keyboard for DCUO and FFXIV for years now. You scroll with the controller, type when you need to. You guys are making a huge deal out if nothing.
So of I'm on PC and prefer a controller vs a keyboard/mouse, I should just play the console? Because according to you, if I'm on a console and need a keyboard for communication, I should just be playing a PC?!?! Some of you make no sense or don't think before you type.

A App is not an option for the replacement of text on the screen. An app would take people view away from the game. Text works because you can view it in the corner of the screen without giving it your full attention. If it was on a different device you would have to look away from you screen to read what was going on. While having an app that could include zone chat and other cool features would be nice you will still need to include text on screen. Also having text chat in an app is opening the market for trolls who would not have to be in game, but just on there phone texting away. It is also more cost efficient to just have it in game then create a new app.

Alright, I'll bite.
1- I don't live with my parents. I have to pay my own rent, bills, food, etc. I don't have an excess of cash to throw at a console that I play literally three games on by buying additional accessories to make a single thing work in a single game.
2- Even if I could afford to buy a bunch of extraneous accessories that really won't get much use, I don't have any convenient place to put it. That means it's going some place out of the way that requires extra effort to get, take to where I'm sitting, then take back when I'm done. I'm not lazy by any means, but I'm not getting up and down and running all over the place for a video game.
3- Due to the previously mentioned issue, I don't have a giant screen television. That means that a chat box, in any form, detracts from my view of the game. As I've also said previously, this is less of an issue on PC due to the fact that it is much easier to manipulate UI elements on screen to adjust it to something that works for you. If implemented, the chat box will either be too small to read, thus rendering it useless, or too big and an annoyance, causing the likelihood of me quitting the game entirely.
I stand by my initial statement, text chat is not practical on a console.

2.) why wouldnt you just leave it next to the console? it makes no sense to put it somewhere else in another room. there isnt a spot on the floor next to the TV?

1- Yes. Let's forgo eating. Because I've survived this long by putting my gaming habits over my personal health and well being. I guess I won't have to worry about the issue when I'm DEAD.
2- Makes sense. Put it on the floor. Where it's likely to be stepped on. And broken. And require to buy another one. Because throwing money at a problem certainly makes it go away.
3- I'm just going to drop the sarcasm for this one and flat out tell you that I have a 15" screen. The text that's already there is small enough as it is. A text box will be too big and annoying, or too small and worthless. Adding text chat will force me to quit the game. I'm sorry, but that's how it is.

When will we get our companion app?
Be sure to list what kind of features it should include.

If you really want a companion app why petition for it here in a thread about in game text chat. It's a seperate issue, make your own thread about it.

I look at my screen.
I see someone shouting for a [dps] for [whatever instance]
I pick up my keyboard.
I type DPS here for [whatever instance]
I receive an invite.
I put down keyboard.
I plug in my mic
I say hello.
We all play the game.
So I ask you non text people this
Please point to the bit of text above which causes you problems?
No really I wasnt just saying it for fun.
Please tell me what part of the above detracts in ANY WAY from anyone's experience.
Or would it maybe just improve it?
The non-text people will not answer this becaue it is to logical. They know that it would not create any problems so they just avoid response like this.
