Console text chat discussion

I played ESO on PC for a while. I could not imagine playing without text chat. When the game was released for console, I bought it because my Laptop isn't "top of the line" and I enjoy this game better with a controller. On consol I don't have to run 2 additional programs to do so. :D Honestly though, what a mess. This is an MMO. One which has no way to speak to the masses. I love the game, I love the mechanics, but I mean seriously. How did this end up at the top of the list for decisions. I dropped $100 on the premium digital version for PS4 (save your harlte comments) and I got a dumbed down version of what I enjoyed on PC. It's not a problem to play the story mode without text chat, that's not an issue at all. However MMO portion of the game is close to impossible without either filtering through forums first in an attempt to find players to meet up with, or dealing with the horribly annoying proximity voice chat. I am all for voice chat. When I play FFXIV on console I run TeamSpeak3 through my android just for extreme primals and what not. However I still spend more time in the Console Chat Box, than I do talking. This proximity chat thing though. Horrible. I mostly hear super high Mic sensitivity blaring everything going on in a players house from all the way from horrible music, to arguing family members. I can't look for group for dungeons, I can't find out where the action is in Cyrodil or link up to wreak some havoc, I can't even look for a guild. This is an MMO, a social massive multilayer online game, with barely a way for the masses to be social. We need text chat.

    Well said.
.... I have to admit, the devs do listen to reason, if not to the forums. Thank you for "nameplates", a welcome addition to immersion, as well as the text chat box for PS4, which only comes on the screen when I need it too, and helps this gameplay SO MUCH MORE then without it. THANK YOU for the additions. Very much appreciated.

Why don't they just make text chat as a second screen feature it be a win win for everyone. The protexters get text chat and the players who don't want it on their screen gets its.Its a win win for everyone.

So your solution is to require players to have/buy a smart phone or tablet, which can cost more than the console they are playing on just to use a basic feature included ingame on every other MMORPG (both PC & console) ?

Really now This is something you can just Google yourself Majority of Americans now a days have a smart phone or tablet so they won't have to go out of their way to buy a new one. They can also make a website for you so call real MMO players can use your PC aswell for Text chat. Also this is a better solution that gives both sides what they want.If you want text chat you would have it if you don't you don't have to use the app or see it on screen.ZOS can make it .99¢ and make some money off of it that's the only way they will probably do it.

That makes no sense ... it would be the same as releasing a game on the console with no controler support but the Dev's saying "Oh you can play this game but you'll need a smart phone or tablet to do anything"

So instead of asking people to jump through hoops, get apps, smart phones, or tablets ... how about just adding text chat back in with the options to hide/turn it off? I mean its already in the PC version of ESO, and the PC version is getting both voice chat & controler support, wouldn't you expect the same features on ALL versions of ESO to be the same?

What you are saying make no.sense

What you make no sense they can not just copy and paste text chat into the game it will take way longer to implement a text box into the game then to make a App for players to communicate through. You example makes no sense at all it wouldn't be a console game then woulf it?So i most ask what is you logic behind your statement.

Also your second paragraph makes no sense. Can you please retype it?

I guess your saying that it's easier to just add it back into the game then make a app in reality its not. They have to redo the UI for them to implement it they Can't just flip a switch of press a button and its in that's not the case.If it was am pretty sure they would have press that button to add by now. Also no one will be jumping through hoops most people have smart phones or a tablet or even a computer.Maybe not one good enough to play the PC version but one good enough to download a App or at least go to a web page. Also to download a App takes no time at all it takes less then a minute to download a App.It be faster quicker and easier for more players to use.Trust me You all say what's wrong with having more options this would give you guys more options and you saying no.Your being a hypocrite you say you want more options but when someone post a way for you to have what you you jump on him because its different then what you want.Hav you every used ESOtoolkit they can also add features from that their two makes the game for Console Ayers so much easier.

Actualy it would be basicly flipping a switch ... text chat was in the console version of ESO till they took it out just before the beta, they have all those UI set-ups & text chat assets just sitting around somewhere on one of thier servers.
They removed it for stupid reasons, the lead console UI dev gave this reason on ESO live as to why they took it out ..."it felt awkward sitting on a couch with a keyboard in my lap" .

Omg Dude really are you crazy it won't be even close to that easy or they would have just did it so this thread can stop popin up.Also they did not take it out before the beta you can't just switch out a build for a game by the snip.KF your fingers it had to be removed months before hand for it not to be their during console beta.

Yes text chat was in the console version of ESO & yes they removed it just before the beta ... proof
This is from a AMA about a month before the console beta FYI.
Hi ESO. I have been looking forward to this game all year and can’t wait for it to become available on the PS4. I would like to know if Chatbox will be available on console versions, as it is on the PC? I am deaf myself so I would be relying on Chatbox to allow me to communicate with other people on the game.

Yes, you have the option of using the text chatbox on console as well. Furthermore, you can plug in a standard USB keyboard into your PS4 and use it to type, if you want.

The chat window collapses by default, but can be pinned to the HUD if you want.

Wow. Didn't even think about the second screen! That's so SMART! No one has thought about..... wait, what? .... Oh yea, that's right..... FFXIV LET'S YOU DO THAT ALREADY.......... ............ so does DCUO. Man, ZOS really messed up this game.
Wait...what? DCUO can use second screen?

    Are you sure?

Sad panda is sad. 50+ forum notifications, all for this thread....not a single ZOS response :(

Don't know if this has been suggested but in this day and age everyone has a smart phone why not make an application for console to chat as I personally would find it easier to communicate this way than using a PS4/XBOX controller.

It has, & it would be a nice second screen option as long as there is text chat in game, otherwise its just as bad if not worse than just voice chat.

In a MMORPG you need a form of comunication that everyone can receive by default, not one where you have to be in the right voice channel or hope the person/people you are trying to talk with has thier smart phones or tablets sitting next to them.

Most people now a days have their smartphone next to them at all times.

This is a terrible solution. A fix that requires the player to both leave the game and use 3rd party programs / websites in order to utilize the systems in the game is a failure of design, especially when those systems were 100% designed to be utilized from inside the game in the first place.

This isn't Secret World where popping open a web browser to do quests is part of the "fun" (which, btw, actually has an in-game web browser because it's completely asinine to expect players to use functions that are not included in the game to play it).

And most especially when there is already a version of the game that has been live for almost a year and half that requires no such bandaid fix.

While you may believe this to be a "reasonable" solution, many of use wholeheartedly disagree w/ such a sentiment.

PS) You don't actually need a keyboard to use an on-screen text chatbox and the version that was tested for ESO did not require a keyboard, though you could use one if you desired.

Or maybe you are new to console and have no idea that almost every console game that supports multiplayer does so with voice chat only.

Yeah, this guy is one hundred percent correct.

I say call a poll of actual players at the boot screen of ESO.
No biased forum polls skewed and conducted by one side or the other.

I say cater to the actual gamers playing the game.

So many people have claimed they left the game over this matter, I think that means zos should cater to the players actually playing the game, as in the 99 percent of players who didn't even notice the text box status because most people don't want a DMV vision test from across their living room every time some gold farmer wants to move some product.

The text for ESO was enlarged for consoles. The tiny PC text was fine right next to the PC player.

The text box on console would likely end up having to be enlarged about 40 percent from PC as well.

What is that going to look like?
Check the DCUO videos for how chat can work on a console.

Multiplayer <> MMORPG. Text chat in Killzone or any other FPS? Yeah...no.

FF:ARR and DCUO? Well...it's kinda there by default.

I'm not really sure where games like Destiny fit...but they seem more voice chatty to me for some reason.

The problem with catering to the actual players, is that you lose any perspective around who is leaving and what would keep them engaged.

Pro-text chat guy: Hey ZOS, you know you could expand your player base if you added text chat like those other MMORPGS?

ZOS: Nah, too much like hard work. We'll just cater to the existing player base....who cares about the players who leave or those who want to play but just get put off by the lack of text chat. We don't need their stinking money anyway.

Existing player base? The Existing Player base is asking for this, the rest are casuals. The Vast majority won't reach Veteran Rank 14.

Read your last sentence. The vast majority won't reach vet 14, when text chat actually becomes helpful.
The vast majority are the casuals who will never need text, won't bother with purchasing a keyboard and sacrificing one of the two usbs on a ps4.

    There's only two usbs!

One for controller. One for turtle beach thingy.

The developers may be more pragmatic than you give them credit for.

I'm casual and I will buy the next dlc. And the one after that.

No keyboard, cause I'm all about that ( casual customer) base.

Yeah I don't think people blowing 400 plus, another 60 for ESO and another 60 for online, etc, don't have the disposable income for something more useful like a smart phone.

I for one think this is a great idea and a chance to add in additional features like skyshard maps or lore books etc.

I know your solution is the answer that will likely happen.

    Controller doesn't need a USB, it's Bluetooth.
    So is my keyboard.
I'm sure you can get an adapter for the Turtle Beach to run off the controller jack, but if not ok, use the USB port.
That gives you an extra USB port. For anything, literally.

Controller charge cord. The battery life is atrocious. And my keyboard is USB wireless. So is my memory backup drive. And headset.

    Two is two few.

It's like going to a burger restaurant, you order a cheeseburger combo, but they only give you the burger. Sure, the burger is delicious, but it is incomplete without the fries. You are not full until you eat those fries! Then, imagine people telling you that you have to go to another restaurant to get the fries. WTH! This is what's happening in this board right now. It's ridiculous.

You don't care for fries so everybody should suffer for it? NOOO!!!

Yeah I think the chat combined with inventory management and maybe a map function and I would absolutely buy it as an app but that would Likely be free or very cheap.

It would have to be, because even if one had a smart phone many still have to pay for data usage. Better idea is to just put it back in the game, and those who dont want to see it can hide it.
As far as USB goes, use rechargable batteries and a charging station plugged into electrical socket. Turtle Beaches can plug right into the controller. So even if you have an external hard drive plugged into a USB (as I do), you still have an extra for a keyboard, or one can just use the controller to type (but TBH I dislike typing with the controller myself, and rather just keep a keyboard next to me).
Last argument I want to comment on was some had mentioned a chat box would be way too small to be seen unless it covered half the screen.. I dont see how a smart phone is going to be larger? I played the console version on the same exact TV that my PC is hooked up to, and the PC version chatbox is larger than my entire phone, not to mention very easy to see, so I dont understand why would it to small to be seen on the console version?

The chat window collapses by default, but can be pinned to the HUD if you want.

    source: http://www.reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/comments/2tfb48/welcome_to_the_eso_tamriel_unlimited_aua/cnyig5x

That question was in response to a deaf person as well. The persons response? "Oh brilliant and thank you for your replied [sic] :) Looking forward to it now."

But hey its only one customer who paid £50 only to be crushingly disappointed by the most nonsensical decision in MMO history.
You give me a chat box ZOS and I'll start giving you my money again.

Thank you for "nameplates", a welcome addition to immersion, as well as the text chat box for PS4, which only comes on the screen when I need it too, and helps this gameplay SO MUCH MORE then without it. If you prefer voice chat n controller, buy for console.

    It's that simple
Thank you for this precious advice - I wasn't able to assess my buying options till now.

By the way, your contribution to this thread stopped being insightful after your 50th or so post. No need to continue repeating things you've already said many times - I've already read and evaluated your thoughts on the matter. Of course, If you have something new to add, I'd try to take it into account.

    - - -

TL;DR: It should have become pretty obvious by now that the console version of this game simply doesn't work as intended without text chat. Core MMORPG features such as guilds, grouping, PvP coordination, trading, even roleplaying - all of them suffer due to poor player communication options.

Any post has become pointless after April 2015 on this topic....it's just ppl trolling

This is about the 16th thread after all those April threads were locked and or deleted

This thread only lives because ppl keep bumping it with no value and those that continue to argue back n forth.....points have been made, reasons to add and reasons not to add where both made sense in some circumstances but Zenimax has also responded

    The thread continues....

Zenimax has not responded, even if they did it wasn't enough to reassure the people that they will add Text Chat and damage numbers etc..., the only way for them to listen is to keep bringing up the problem. Which is why people keep on talking about it.

I'm not attempting to argue with you, but I do want to share that on two seperate ZOS live episodes, different ZOS staff members gave a specific address on their goals, ideas and approach which drove their decisions to remove this long ago from development intentionally.

Many are saying those statements aren't acceptable but those statements were not made for contest or debate. It was just FYI to address concerns such as this thread. It's not coming based on those statements and not being considered at this time at all.

They have encouraged the discussion in the thread only but at no point are they commenting because as mentioned above, the decision to remove was made long ago prior to release.

It kinda comical that people in the thread attack anyone who doesn't agree or who suggest the thread is dead due to official ZOS live responses...the thread as all are here for discussion primarily.

At times threads are linked when ZOS asks about different topics and concerns so MAYBE at some point in 2016 or 2017 this will be reviewed especially with the recent announcement from Microsoft that the Xbox one will in 2016 fully support mouse and keyboard use due to win10 update.

Right now tho, until that occurs, based on ZOS' point of view......just feel free to discuss only but don't expect any considerations to change as it's not on the list.

You are talking about eso live episode that happened months before console was launched. I would like to hear there thoughts now that console has been out and they have received freed back. Let face it ZOS has changed many things about the game from first launch on PC. So to say just because the had one idea long ago that it will never change is not realistic. We need a response from zos now not long ago.

No actually the ESO lives I'm talking about were right befor launch and at launch. All within 45-60 days...nothing old. April - June 2015

This is incorrect, they've said multiple times that they would consider text-based communications, but that they weren't likely to make it a straight up text chat window like on PC.
