ESO & Kaizen: megathread: Based on the other games you know, how would you improve ESO?

Hello ! We would all love to see ESO getting better, don't we? Please share your ideas and experiences you have/had in other games so that we can all see (incl. ZOS) what is possible and how ESO could be improved. Please do not mention names of any other games or companies as that could get your post deleted and your account temporarily banned. So just write about what you know is possible (i.e. it works/worked in other games) and let us hope that it will help the developers to catch up and make ESO much better than it already is.

As an example, let me start with something from another post:

Speaking of more options for playable characters, why do we still have only a handful of classes? In another MMORPG (the name of which I will not mention here, but it's probably the closest to ESO in terms of how it approaches action combat, with dodging, aiming, bar swaps, and so on) there are:

- 9 classes
- each class has 4 different specialisations which completely changes the way you play and, in essence, turns that class into something else so what you are really offered are 9x4=36 classes
- 19 different weapons
- each profession utilizes weapons very differently (if you play a necro and you use a dagger you do feel you are playing a necro :) )
- one-handed weapons can be dual wielded
- a two-handed weapon gives you 5 weapon skills, a main hand weapon gives you 3, an off-hand weapon gives you 2 skills
- there are two weapon bars you swap in combat (like in ESO), 5 skills each, so you get many weapon combinations and even more weapon x weapon x bar x class x specialisation combinations

So many options and most ppl playing both games consider the other one perfectly balanced compared to constant changes and balancing problems in ESO. So it can be done if the combat rules are well designed which means there is hope for ESO too.

You might ask, "What are you doing on the ESO forum then? Why don't you just go and play that other game"? Well, I do play the other game but I love TES and ESO, too, so I would like to see ESO get better. Some of the reasons why I still play ESO:

- it's available on consoles, the other game is not
- ESO has great controller support even on PC, the other game offers no native support for controllers, it's just m+k (well, you can remap and use a controller but it's not the same, the UI looks the same as for M+K, there is no analog movement, and you don't see controller buttons)
- I like light-attack weaving, the other game doesn't have it (it's like wearing the Velothi Ur-Mage's Amulet and never performing a light attack - I do like combat in the other game, but also want to have a game like ESO where you can weave)
- I like heavy attacks too, the other game doesn't have them (well, unless you think about some skills like about heavy attacks)
- I like some hard-mode DLC dungeons / trials in ESO (I like raids/dungeons and so on in the other game too, but I don't want to give up the ones I like in ESO, why would I?)
- I completed all TES games (including the archaic retro game The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall) - I like the TES universe (I like the other one too but don't want to give up TES)
- I have guilds and lots of friends in ESO

So yeah, I do like and play both games and therefore I am invested in ESO getting even better (much better) than it already is. And because I played so many different games, I see very clearly that there is A LOT that can be improved in ESO. There is hope to make it MUCH better than it already is if there is will on ZOS's side.

Now, let me paste a few example (and completely random) comments from the internet about what others liked in other MMORPGs:

- re. respect for players' time and wellbeing:

"exact same happened to me about a month ago when i started ***. It's an amazing game that doesn't treat you like a employee, i work 12 hour days and i need something that won't punish me for taking 3 or 4 months off. Once i realized that this game will just be there for me whenever i get back i purchased the complete edition. and the past month have been fantastic.

" I stopped playing for 6 years and when i came back, my gears are still relevant."

"To be honest, I'm all for horizontal progression, and I'm over the never ending 'Gear-Treadmill'. To me personally I feel like all almost the other MMORPGs are like a second Job, but *** is like watching Netflix. It's relaxing, respects your time, every day feels fresh and it leaves you wanting for more."

"I started playing *** in 2019 and I have been able to do all the content and 90% of the achievements of all the expansions thanks to its horizontal progression. I wish many MMO players (especially *** players) would open their minds and see that the point of a game is to have fun and not increase your character power all the time."

"*** already does what I wished *** would someday figure out. Upgrading your gameplay experience and movement abilities instead of endlessly chasing gear upgrades and throwing the previous ones in the garbage (with the content you did to optain it) , is just... smarter. Players will have way more content available to them at max level. And the devs know that the content they design won't only be relevant for the duration of the current expansion, like it is in ***."

- re. mounts with various abilities incl. some useful in combat: "oh and one more note mounts in *** are the *** BEST mounting system i have ever seen in an MMO. They are all unique, and you will use all of them even after you get skyscale or griffon which i have already."

- re. dynamic events:

"The world of *** feels alive with its dynamic events and it's what I look for in an MMO."

"Honestly what got me really into it is how the world feel so alive, you can listen to random npc talking, follow them as they walk away to see what happen and suddenly end up in an event. Suddenly many people from the area join, that event leads to another which is dependent on the outcome and so on. Simply amazing!"

""This is the only game that feels like a living and breathing world to me.
I personally believe *** excels at providing the players with a grand scale spectacle, that brings together all players who are just going about their day to be drawn into one of these events, which are usually spread out over the map, these smaller events in-turn lead these players from all over into one location, which then culminates into a huge final battle towards the end.
This is truly a feast for the eyes and something I believe every MMORPG enjoyer should experience at least once in their lifetime."

- re. PVP

"The horizontal progression system, upgrade to max level in PvP, and access to standardized gear and skills mean that veteran players do not have an unfair gear advantage over new ones, which is present in every other MMO i've ever played. What matters is skill, intelligence, tactics, and reflexes. As it should be"

- re. fair monetization

"No pay to win, no pay for convenience. All mounts and gear as rewards from getting achievements and playing the game. No gambling or predatory lootboxes."

"The devs said they thought subscriptions were unfair and unhealthy for game design. If you like the game, you buy it or the next expansion, you pay once and keep playing forever, and that motivates them to try and make the game the best for the player instead of making it the way that just keeps the player addicted running on the hamster wheel and spending money"

"Rewards I get in game make me want to play it and feel some sense of achievement."

- re. cross-save / cross-play

"some people on the game forums were negative about it or saying cross-play and cross-region were impossible or would be a disaster but, guess what, it worked great, and everyone on pc, ps, xbox is happy now LOL the game is so much better off now like it was revived"

- re. underwater exploration and combat

"it's *** magic never seen anything like it in any other mmo i love it!"

- re. story and questing

"i love the story of ***, for me is the best thing of the game, followed by all thing you described in this video"

"all main characters were memorable and I got so emotionally attached that I got really sad each time one of them died"

"unlike in my previous mmo *** doing overland content and questing is like doing a veteran dungeon which feels great - the old one was so easy that it just made it boring"

- re. classes & weapons

"best thing all weapons have completely different skills on different classes which is just awesome!"

"classes feel like they should instead of everything being the same and bland"

"When I play a necromancer I feel like a necromancer. When I see an Elementalist, I feel like I met one. It's so great for the immersion, I love it!"

- re. PUGs

"for me the biggest shock was having no waiting times for auto pugs for dungeons, pvp and raids. in my previous game i had to wait for half an hour for a stupid dungeon unless i was a tank! never going back there what a waste of my time"

- re. game design

"You just randomly help others and you are rewarded for that, even such simple things like reviving another player or an npc. Such a wonderful idea and it just makes the community nicest I have ever seen in any MMO RPG"

"Rewarding strangers for cooperating. Chests, resources, quests, skills interacting with non-party members, combo fields, etc. By rewarding people for helping strangers, it encourages a good community, and having fun with friendly people is why we play online games."

"Mentoring and Event System. Being able to play in the entire world and not one-shot things while doing real-time events with other players, including friends who are new to the game even though I’ve played for thousands of hours, is very important to me."

"There are just no downtimes and you can keep playing while your game is downloading files and updates!"

"I love *** because the devs focus on quality and it has the least number of bugs and performance issues that I have ever seen in any mmo"

As you can see, the comments are completely random and in no particular order. I may add more later. Please share your ideas on what should be added to ESO to make it better than it already is !

Mods, please do not delete this or do not ban me again (or anyone else who decides to share their experiences here) for mentioning the difference between ESO and other games. We are not promoting any other games here, just sharing our feedback about what we know is possible (because we have experienced it ourselves) and what we really liked in other games.

Everyone, please avoid negativity and be positive. The fact that you are not interested in something others like does not mean that it should not be implemented or is impossible to implement. We can all criticise others but please try to control yourself and instead present a positive vision of what new features you would like to see instead of what you would not like to see (also bear in mind that many of the features people want can be designed in a way which make them opt-in/opt-out so if you don't like something, you can just opt-out and it will never have any impact on you (if developers desing and implement it the right way)).

UPDATE:
Update 40 lists very nice improvements to the game, including some requested in this thread  so check out the news on the official web site and keep sharing your ideas!

The game is fine as it is in my view, and doesn't need constant suggestions of how it can be "improved", least of all by importing aspects of other games the absence of which makes ESO distinct and highly popular. Whenever changes have been made to it, they have often turned out to be unpopular either in principle or through their implementation.

This. I'm pretty tired of people wanting to make ESO into something else entirely.

Only things that come to my mind to vastly improve my personal game experience is

    - crossplay + crossbuy so I can play with my friends and partner

    - rock + vegetation updates of base maps which look very ugly compared to all the expansions and everything added the day after release. (esp on max settings 4K). And no I don't find this 'charming' since I only started playing around Blackwood so I don't have just nostalgia glasses that makes everything look pretty.

I understand some think that nothing can be improved by ZOS in this game and feel the urge to share that opinion here and I do appreciate their taking time out of their busy schedules to write replies but, as I wrote, I was hoping to hear from those who do have ideas on how the game could be improved. I mean, I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking it's not very interesting to hear: 'no idea', 'nothing', 'don't want any changes' and so on. I get it, you don't want any changes, if you don't, consider your opinion voiced in the two first replies to the OP, no need to repeat it 😁

Now, let's hear if there are any players who do have ideas or who did experience variety of games, and remember thinking 'oh, boy, I wish we had this in ESO'!

Off the top of my head, not a big fun of long downtimes each time there is an update. I know many other games where there aren't any. This should be improved.

I'm also not a fan of what has already been pointed out above - none of us should be forced to pay for the same content (e.g. expansions, any race any alliance and so on) multiple times if we want to play on multiple platforms.

i also find eso pretty good as is, outside of some balancing problems (more related to pvp) and some QoL stuff (most of which is actually getting touch in the next update)

To reiterate, the OP didn't suggest the game isn't already pretty good. In case it wasn't clear, the topic of this thread is "based on your experience in other games, do you have ideas on how to make this game better?" 😁
I mean, if we pay monthly and also pay separately for expansions and so on, we would like our hard-earned cash to be used for the Devs to continuously improve our experience with this service, it's not a one-off payment for a product you just buy once

I would stress both the importance and validity of those who don't want change saying so in a thread like this.

It's important because if someone suggests a change and only those who support it comment on it, with those opposed to it keeping quiet, then developers will take a false conclusion from the thread and think the change has overwhelming support when it does not.

It's valid because this is a discussion forum in which posters are free to exchange opinions within the forum rules. Thread originators can't simply limit contributions only to those who agree with them.

I can appreciate your looking for support and inviting other ideas for changing the game (you might say "improving" but one person's improvement can be another person's game-breaker), but it's always just as worthwhile to hear other opinions and ideas too in an open discussion forum.

Well, there were various ideas implicit in the comments you quoted at the start of the thread. However, I'm not saying that "no good change is possible", I'm saying I don't want any changes because in my view the game is fine as it is and doesn't need "improving".

Another example mentioned above, would it be an improvement if, like in some other games, ESO offered more meaningful rewards for achievements in raids, arenas, dungeons, and so on? E.g. many more nice costumes, skins, polymorphs, personalities, mount skins, styles, and so on?

The last MMOs I played were WoW and RIFT. I left them because I couldn't stand playing them any longer (played WoW for 7 years, RIFT for 3) and "graduated" to ESO right after quitting RIFT. There is NOTHING from those games that I want to see in ESO.

The last single player games I played were Oblivion and Skyrim. TES is my "home universe". My soul is completely satisfied by ESO and the other TES games; I'm still playing both Skyrim and Oblivion btw.

As for crossplay, I'm totally uninterested in that arriving for PC. If consoles want to do that fine, but we already have way too many people on PC (especially during free play stuff plus events). I wouldn't object to crossplay between the two PC megaservers, but since I already play numerous characters on both megaservers, I think it would be more trouble for me than it would be worth.

Downtime does not now nor has it ever bothered me.

I have to say, in my view the game is perfect the way it is. I'm sorry that's not what you want to hear.

All feedback is appreciated and useful - those who read what we write will obviously develop their own opinions if they haven't yet, thanks 🙂. I know many people who love other TES games and, over the years, suggested tons of improvements they would like to see in ESO. I did play all other TES games too, including in VR and the retro titles like Daggerfall
I wouldn't mention any other games or companies by name if you don't want to be banned, see my previous post.

Another example mentioned above, would it be an improvement if, like in some other games, ESO offered more meaningful rewards for achievements in raids, arenas, dungeons, and so on? E.g. many more nice costumes, skins, polymorphs, personalities, mount skins, styles, and so on?

I'm not against that, but it's clearly impractical given the monetisation of those things at present. I also think that the more you increase the special quality of the rewards for harder content, the more you come up against the problems that AwA introduced in terms of reward-sharing.

Ah bah. I said I quit playing them because I wasn't happy with them. I'm not advocating anyone play them, and for years here I've said I played them and moved on after I got tired of them - moved on to ESO in fact.... as well as Oblivion and Skyrim.

To reiterate, the OP didn't suggest the game isn't already pretty good. In case it wasn't clear, the topic of this thread is "based on your experience in other games, do you have ideas on how to make this game better?" 😁
I mean, if we pay monthly and also pay separately for expansions and so on, we would like our hard-earned cash to be used for the Devs to continuously improve our experience with this service, it's not a one-off payment for a product you just buy once

theres a lot of other games out there i wont/dont play because i dont like their features and do not want to see them in eso

I feel we are getting somewhere now. I am sure I'm not the only one interested in hearing what are your top 5 features you wouldn't like to see and why 🙂

Also, out of all those games you tested, did you dislike them all or can you think of any, even the tiniest feature that you like and wouldn't mind seeing in ESO?

Also, what do you think about any of the features mentioned above? For example, would it be an improvement if there were no downtimes? Would it be better for those who want to play with friends on other platforms, if they didn't have to pay for the same content multiple times?

theres only about 3 major things i would like to see changed here
    1. mount training (let me do all of the upgrades all at once like bag/bank upgrades)
    2. fishing (automatic reel in, basically treat fishing nodes as any other material node)
    3. companions (not having to redo their *** quests on every character to be able to use them)

Mount training is a difficult one, I see why some dislike it but I support the notion of spreading some things over time as that is the way players get to play long-term and giving everything away instantly takes away any sense of purpose or achievement.

The fishing change suggested would be a classic case of trivialising content and I'd be wholly opposed to that. I enjoy fishing as it is, and the concept of waiting to reel in a fish is pretty common in similar games. What I would prefer is a fishing skill line, make fishing more interesting by enhancing it, not trivialising it.

If people want to avoid repeating companion quests (to get the companion, not their personal quests) and are prepared to pay Crowns to do so, because that's how it would work, then I don't object to that although it wouldn't interest me. Personal quests and rapport should remain entirely separate between the characters who should develop their own relations with the companions.

Here are my own personal suggestions based entirely on this game eso and what i want to improve my experience. I love this game.

    1. For me the jump from normal trials to vet trials is too steep, i would like an intermediate level or make normal trials a bit closer in difficulty to vet trials. Normal trials should train players to be able to beat vet trials.
2.we also should not have to download a whole lot of addon helpers for trials.
    3. There should be group trial finder just like there is for dungeons
    4. Pledges should not include dlc dungeons and if they must they should offer higher rewards
    5. Gear farming in dungeons, at least in dlc dungeons need to have better drop rates. I cant spend thecrest of my years trying to get that one piece of gear i need. Its not as bad in trials.

These improvements would really bring more joy to my gaming experience in eso.

I think many of your ideas are more the type of thing you would consider when making a new game rather than an existing game.

I'm sure most of us don't exactly love when things go down for updates/maintenance when we want to use them but, it's likely that redesigning things to avoid that at this point would significantly hamper content production for a while. SWTOR had a functionality to download while playing and annoyances from how the software behaved later on caused me more of a hassle than the time I saved by being able to play the game a bit sooner.

Some games have done a good job with underwater environments and mounted combat but, a bunch of games have also failed or had mixed results in those endeavors. I don't think either would really be worth the investment at this stage.

The financial model that games follow isn't necessarily going to be easy to adjust once it's set.

i know they wont do anything about mount training because they already monetized the riding lessons, just something i would wish for, there is literally nothing wrong with removing the timegate otherwise (i basically refuse to even bother with my mounts because im not logging in all of my toons for 180 days for a max mount)

i dont see the fishing one as trivializing content, there is no skill involved with fishing, its literally just a time wasting minigame, i would prefer to have the option to just have it auto reel in and i would actually fish significantly more, to me that as it currently is, is nothing different from harvesting a node except it has an extra waiting step for no apparent real reason

for the companions, my suggestion is only involving the unlock quest, not even trying to get rid of it, just some way to fast track it like tribute or cyro tutorial where you can walk up and say "ive already done this before". going forward i will be only unlocking new companions on 2 characters, my main to experience the story, and a dps toon (ignoring the story and speeding it as fast as possible) so i can powerlevel the companion to 20

i already have started doing that with sharp and azander, i would really like to use and experiment with them more, but their intro quests are so long and unenjoyable even after the 3rd time im just like nope, they are gonna gather dust

Here is another example - a comment I just saw in one of my PC guilds today:

"Speaking of assistants, even though ZOS wants us to pay for convenience, I think it is pretty inconvenient that each time we summon an assistant, it will unsummon any other assistant or companion. It would be great if ZOS fixed that but don't hold your breath 😉"

I must say I agree. It is pretty annoying and makes me unwilling to summon any assistant while I have a companion with me. That's actually the main reason why I haven't bought any assistant on my PC account after getting annoyed by this on my Playstation account where I bought them all (but mainly end up selling/deconstructing/banking at my guild houses or in towns)

While I'm at it, why can't I use my banker to sell stuff on guild stores? That's another annoyance. Why can't my merchant repair my stuff like all the other merchants? And don't even get me started about armory assistants that cannot be summoned in trials which makes them pretty useless. Saw someone's rant about that (and the price of per-character armory slots) today so I'm not the only one that wants these improvements. Please ZOS, just fix it already 🙂

Impractical? Why? We see that something is practical in other games, we want it in this game. As paying customers we don't really care about their monetisation schemes. It's the corporation's job to make it "practical", not our concern, isn't it

Re. what you wrote about riding: I'm sorry but I don't see how a scheme meant to "incentivize" us either to log in every day (a very standard mechanism employed by many games nowadays, unfortunately) or buy a shortcut from the crown store would somehow give us the sense of achievement. A trifecta may be considered an achievement but logging in and clicking on the stable NPC every day for 180 days on every character doesn't feel like one ;). Even if it were an achievement, I would argue that allowing one to just do it in one go after earning enough gold (like it is with upgrading inventory space) would be as much of an achievement ;).

Same with redoing the companion quests on all your characters. It's such a terrible waste of time.

As for fishing, it is already trivial and I agree with @Necrotech_Master that it could at least be made less annoying by implementing the improvement he suggested.

In short, I think most of us pay for games in order to have fun and/or do something challenging, not to be bored to death by extremely simple but tedious chores.
