Well, I successfully contained his soul by not looting him and waiting for it to play out per a tip in zone chat. However now I cannot exit. The portal that forms after talking to Malvos has an arrow but no portal. I see no way to wayshrine out as I can't find a way to change the map from my current location. /stuck just kills me and respawns me right there.

Well, I have been waiting for a GM-reply for a loooong time there now, just waiting around in a empty zone. Nothing. Either they don't know what to do or they are just ignoring me. Nice...

I have played MMOs since Ultima Online, and this is the buggiest release for me so far. Hands down.

Never mind, figured out how to toggle the map and recall to Devon's wayshrine. My problem is solved

AlysShir, your idea doesn't work at all. I managed to fight Balreth in a group. We killed him in 10 seconds, maximum...NPC didn't stop attacking and same bug in the end...

Going to try and not loot and also pay attention to the NPC behavior and let you all know.

Used the way shrine/10 minute "reset" suggestion to start again.

Same issue here. Can't contain the spirit. Nothing to interact with. Support Agent suggested /reloadui, and to try again. Neither worked for me. Guess I'll just ignore this quest for now.

Any update on this? Can't continue through the zone with this quest bugged out.

Not looting seems irrelevant. He dies right in between both pools, NPC despawns, and I see a spirit come out and circle around but nothing appears or happens.

NPC DID stop fighting about halfway thru. Anyone else know how to get the NPC back into the fray? Even my summon stops fighting sometimes.

I've found a definitive trigger to make Balreth bindable: Make sure that the NSC initiates combat with Balreth and takes damage from him.

I requested help. As I was speaking with the GM, he respawned on his own, but the quest was still at "Contain Spirit," so couldn't kill him again. GM told me to log out for 10 minutes and he'd summon me into a safe area, and that may advance the quest. I did that, and 30+ minutes later I can't log in that character. I get error 325..., and the on the character select screen it shows her being in "Clean Test" zone.

So I contacted ingame support, they said that there is no workaround for this issue and to try the quest again tomorrow. I'll be playing around with a few of the suggestions found here on the forum, but I thought this would be good to bring up to clear up any conflicting information.

Same problem here. I kill him, quest updates saying I need to click on altar and summon guardians to bind him, but there is no altar, no spirit nothing.

Templar, dualwielding swords, completely self-crafted iron armor and weapons, using also class skills. Killed him solo and in group, tried resetting, abandoning. Wayshrined away too.

Twin slashes IV, Flurry IV. Puncturing strikes IV, rushed ceremony IV, sun fire IV
What was your strategy for defeating Balreth?
Various. Tried is 4 times already. Mostly stun whenever available, kill scamps as soon as they appear and go back to him
Any specific details about how you fought him, or anything that seemed odd during the fight?

so from what I noticed, balreth's spirit flies to the place the altar should be, but the altar never actually appears, I am playing as an argonian templar

The portal symbol appears but cannot interact.

Waypointed to Devons's Watch, will see if I can finally complete the quest.

I finally completed it on my last try before giving up, I'm not sure what triggered the successful progress, but I tried drowning the NPC into lava in an attempt to 'keep it in combat'. I did this by engaging Balreth right away as he goes to the lava... That seemed to work.

Yup, you have to waypoint out after successfully binding him, another bug.

Messy, this quest worked fine in beta.

I've defeat him two time but there is always a blue light and the voice of Mavos that tell me to contain his soul but then nothing. It worked in the last beta that's strange. Hope it will be rapidly fixe.

I tried /help in order to try to figure out my Balreth bugs. The agent never said anything, just ended the conversation. Amazing level 8 quest bug after a long beta, but far more amazing customer service. Bugs happen, but this is a weird low level one for a launch like this, and the agent never saying a single word, but closing my /help chat.......priceless.

i just completed the quest: i killed balreth but i didnt talk to mavos and just left the instance and the quest was completed.

This happened to me as well. I then q'ed again and got an agent almost immediately. I said hello and typed my problem. then waited and asked whether they could see what I was typing. After a long time they said yes and asked what my issue was. I stated I already related it but could do so again if they didn't see it. They then said they could and proceeded to tell me they couldn't help. Point is, I think they are having issues with the help software working properly.

yes donot talk to mavos or you ll get portal stuck, just leave the instance after you bind balreth

EDIT: if you are stuck allready, just relog it will reset the conversation and you can leave thru the old portal

When i did Balreth i had todo the 10 minute waypoint thing, 2nd try i killed him rly fast maybe thats a key to it aswell seeing as groups manage to bind but solo dont

No specific strategy outside of Crystal Fragments spam with Restoration Staff Heavy Attacks weaved in when low on Magicka and Endless Fury at 20%.

Any specific details about how you fought him, or anything that seemed odd during the fight?

First time I could use E to stun Balreth, once bugged and waited for reset I had to race his health bar down prior to pool jumps, because the Stun was no longer available.

k after 20m of trying i've finally make it work, it's like someone says, THE NPC MUST NEED IN COMBAT when u kill Balreth, at some point the npc don't fight anymore, even if he's hitten, at that point i've let the npc take the aggro of Balreth (by killing myself on the lava) then i go out fo the istance and rejoin it (without reset) at this point the npc was fighting balreth, i've nuke it and it's work, hope this can help othere people on this issue

Indeed, the core issue is that for some reason Garyn stops attacking Balreth. If that happens it will bug out. You need either kill Balreth before Garyn becomes inactive, or use that trick above.

When Balreth dies, Garyn must be in combat and actively fighting Balreth or it fails!

Grouping (and having a group's DPS) may help here.
